2 College Connection Discover how to earn college credits while still in high school Change your learning experience Connect with the culture of college. The College Connection program allows you to attend Dutchess Community College classes at your high school. It gives you the opportunity to experience college work before you graduate. Also called concurrent enrollment, this program allows students to earn college credit and high school credit through college courses taken in the high school Courses in College Connection are taught by high school teachers who have been approved by DCC to teach. These teachers are required to meet the same standards as on-campus faculty in order to teach classes. Students are required to meet the standards that the College maintains for all of its students. Coursework completed in College Connection classes is at the same level of excellence as the same course taught on campus. And, if you are enrolled in the program, you are considered a DCC student.

3 Some of the benefits of enrolling in the College Connection program include: You ll become a more attractive college candidate by showing admissions counselors that you were motivated enough to accept the challenge of taking college courses while still in high school. You can potentially save thousands of dollars in tuition by reducing future college cost. You may be able to graduate from college earlier by earning transferable credits. You can lighten the first or second semester course load in college and relieve some of the pressure and stress in the first year. You ll have the time to take more electives in college, to complete a double major, or to take advantage of the many other interesting out of classroom experiences that college offers. 5 To be eligible for the College Connection program, you must meet the following requirements: You must be a junior or senior and be recommended by your school principal or guidance counselor. You must meet the DCC course prerequisites as stated in the College s Catalog. (This includes required placement testing for certain courses.) College Connection is about making a commitment for success The course that you register for will be part of the College s regular course offerings as listed in the current DCC catalog. Remember, the College Connection course is a college class and will be taught on a college level. A significant time commitment is required to be successful in the course. The general rule is that for every hour spent in class each week, you ll need to find at least two hours outside of class to keep up with the course work. The grade earned in the class will become part of your permanent college transcript. Credits earned upon successful course completion may be transferable to other colleges and universities. How will your college credits transfer? SUNY system colleges accept DCC College Connection credits and will post them to your permanent records, although all courses may not meet specific major and degree requirements. While most universities and research centers will accept DCC College Connection credits, they may have specific requirements for transfer. We encourage you to contact prospective colleges/universities to find out about course transferability before registering for a DCC College Connection course. It is solely the decision of the receiving college whether to accept transfer credit. When transferring credits, you should be prepared to present the course syllabus to college officials. We highly recommend maintaining a complete portfolio of all course materials to verify the quality of work covered in the course. The portfolio should consist of all the work you did during the course, as well as all instructor handouts and notes pertaining to the course.
