3 Conservation The team can undertake conservation of three dimensional objects such as archaeology, social history, decorative arts, arms and armour and ethnography. The work areas covered include: Laser cleaning of a marble bust: Before & After surface cleaning repair stabilization and consolidation Micro-excavation laser cleaning Photographic and documentation reports object packing Conserved and mounted suit of Japanese Armour The work is undertaken in the conservation studios at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery on in situ The team can also provide consultancy services for capital development, storage and related documents and funding bids. E.g. Object condition assessments and environmental surveys 3

4 Investigative Conservation The team can offer: X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis for the identification of metal alloys and heavy metal hazards (arsenic, lead, mercury) using both the portable and table top XRF Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR ) analysis for the identification of plastics X-ray of archaeological & Egyptian Materials X-radiography for archaeological and museum objects 3-D digital Microscopy for detailed imaging and measurement Information and data can be provided for research documents and objects reports Photo micrograph with measurements 4

5 Collections care The team can offer: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) - offering assistance in setting up a monitoring programme, identification of insects, recording and reviewing data, treatment of infested objects (freeze treatment) and advice on prevention and pest proofing Damage caused by an insect infestation Health Checks - a comprehensive review of your museum or store offering recommendations for improvements for the longevity of the collections and steps to help your institution move towards the achievement of accredited museum status. The final report covers advice on: light, temp/rh, IPM, storage and display environments Environmental monitoring and reports - offering advice on setting up a monitoring programme and collecting and interpreting data. Reports on collected data can be provided, with recommendations to improve the environment in line with current best practice Collection s Trust 5

6 Health and safety The team can assist you in identifying potential hazards in collections and offer guidance and training to mitigate the risks, for example: The identification of hazardous materials, e.g. arsenic, mercury & lead using the hand held XRF, this work can be carried out on site Advice and training on identifying and managing asbestos in collections Testing for arsenic in natural history collections Identification and advice on radioactive materials Advice on mould Asbestos in Vehicles 6

7 Training Courses Examples of courses offered are: Environmental Equipment explained Emergency planning Housekeeping Integrated Pest Management (IPM) The Museum Environment (light/temp/rh) Labelling and marking museum objects Packing and handling Benchmarks in Collections Care Hazards in museum collections Basic conservation techniques Bespoke course can be arranged as demand requires e.g. the conservation and restoration of ceramics and glass The courses can be run at the requesting museum s site or within Birmingham Museums Trust facilities Talks, Tours and Presentations IPM training Talks and presentations can be provided for specialist groups along with tours of the conservation studios, please contact the team for further details 7

9 Our Conservation Team Deborah Cane, Conservation Manager: Dip Cons, MA, ACR, FIIC Deborah has a background in object conservation. She has previously worked at National Museums Scotland and National Museums Liverpool, working on collections ranging from social history, decorative arts and ethnology. Deborah has a working knowledge and keen interest in plastic conservation. She has developed programmes to identify hazards in collections, such as testing for arsenic in the Natural History collections at BMT and the hat collection at the Museum of London. Tel: Jane Thompson-Webb, Preventive Conservator: BSc, ACR Jane has a background in object conservation and spent several years as a freelance conservator working on range of objects spanning jewellery to plesiosaurs. She now specialises in preventive conservation with particular interests in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and in training others in all aspects of preventive conservation. She has recently written two Success Guides for AIM on basic conservation and collection care and manages a website that guides the user through IPM and insect identification. Tel: Derek Brian, Preventive Conservator: BSc, Dip Cons With twenty years experience as a practical and preventive conservator at National Maritime Museum and Science Museum in London, Derek specialises in managing hazards such as radioactive materials and asbestos in museum objects. His current projects include monitoring dust and vibration from construction sites, and managing the Birmingham Museums environment monitoring system. Tel:

10 Pieta Greaves, Job Title: MSc, ACR Pieta has been the Staffordshire Hoard Conservation Coordinator since January Previous to this, she worked in Scotland on some of the most internationally significant archaeological material recovered in recent times, including the Lewisvale Roman Altars, Ardnamuchan Viking Boat Burial and the Forteviot Bronze Age Dagger Burial. Pieta trained as a conservator at Cardiff University after a career as an Archaeologist, she became an accredited member if Icon in Tel: Ciaran Lavelle, Object Conservator: PG Dip, BSc and MSc Ciarán has a background in object conservation and archaeology. He read for a BSc in Archaeology and Palaeoecology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies from the University of Ulster and a BSc and an MSc in conservation from Cardiff University. He has worked on projects at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, the Science Museum, the Staffordshire Hoard, the Ruwayda and Rubayqa excavations for Lampeter University and the Methone Excavation for UCLA. He has experience in teaching conservation, most recently on the UCL Qatar conservation programme. Tel: Lizzie Miller, Object Conservator: BA, MA Lizzie has experience as an objects conservator and has worked on a wide range of archaeological, applied art and historic objects. Following a BA in Archaeology, she trained at Durham University, gaining an MA with Distinction in the Conservation of Archaeological & Museum Objects, which included a nine month placement at the National Museum of Scotland. Since graduating Lizzie has worked as an Objects Conservator at Bevaringscenter Fyn (conservation centre), Denmark, and has undertaken an ICON internship at Bolton Museum focussing on preventive conservation Tel:
