1 ISOM4740 Enterprise Resource Management Winter 2012 Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics, and Operations Management COURSE: ISOM4740 Enterprise Resource Management (3-0-0:3) This course introduces the basic concepts and practices of enterprise resource management. Popular enterprise resource planning software packages are used for discussing and building integrated business solutions. Winter 2012 Time: 9:30 12:20 p.m., Monday to Friday Venue: Room 4116 (Microsoft.NET Lab, Lift 19) INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Ronald S. Participation 20 Assignments 10 Lab exercises 10 ERP simulation game 10 Final exam 50 Total 100. Note: Your participation points, for the period January 4 to 19, are primarily determined by in-class exercises (max 1 point each). You can earn additional participation points through the active use of discussion board and contribution to the question bank at LMES. Points will be awarded according to the relevance, quality, and pattern of your posting on discussion board (max 1 point each, normally 0.5 point per posting). The maximum participation points will be 2 points per day and 20 points for the term. Postings made during the weekend are counted toward Friday. You are allowed to use an A-4 size paper with notes on it (i.e., the cheat sheet) for the exam. To ensure you have adequate time to prepare this cheat sheet, you are advised to organize your notes throughout the term.

2 COURSE 1. Compare the strategic values and limitations of enterprise systems GOALS: (PILO-1,7). (with matching PILO) 2. Discuss the basic concepts and practices of process-oriented management in a global, competitive environment (PILO-3). 3. Define the skills and knowledge to successfully implement an enterprise system in organizations (PILO-4). 4. Identify the new development of ERP software and applications for facilitating e-business (PILO-7). 5. Demonstrate examples of business process integration through the use of ERP core applications and modules (PILO-3,7). 6. Identify the tangible benefits of enterprise integration for decision making using ERP in a simulated environment (PILO-3,7). COURSE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES By completing this course, you should be able to: 1. Describe the information systems evolution and its impacts on the development of ERP systems in global businesses as well as local small businesses. 2. Differentiate a business process from a business function. 3. Identify the kinds of data and information that each major functional area produces and needs. 4. Describe the benefits and limitations of system integration. 5. Compare and contrast different ERP architectures (including three-tier, web-based, and service oriented). 6. Explain why ERP system implementations often incorporate process redesign and industry best practices. 7. Construct a process flow diagram for major business processes. 8. Compare and contrast different enterprise system implementation strategies and processes. 9. Determine and analyze the total cost of ownership and vendor selection based on financial criteria such as net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). 10. Describe how open source, SOA and SaaS will impact the future development of enterprise systems. 11. Describe the major functions and benefits of customer relationship management (CRM) and supply chain management (SCM) software, as an extension of ERP software. 12. Define the security, ethical, and legal issues related to ERP systems and their implementation. 13. Use basic reporting and analytical tools to perform business intelligence applications. 14. Solve a material requirements planning (MRP) problem by determining the timing and quantity requirements for each material. 15. Perform proficiently an integrated business process involving sales and distribution, production planning and control, purchasing, warehouse management, and financial transactions using the ERP system 16. Demonstrate essential decision making skills in an ERP simulation game.

Your write-up should be 1 to 2 pages long, single spaced between lines but double spaced between paragraphs. You could supplement the materials from the class notes and other sources, such as publications or relevant information found on the Internet. When quoted directly or used substantially, make sure you provide proper citations and bibliography of the original work to avoid plagiarism. The completed work should be sent to isom4740@gmail.com before 9 am on the day it is due. Late assignment will not be accepted unless it is accompanied by a valid excuse. Assignment #1 Choose only one of the two topics: a. List three major criteria, with a short description, that you consider most important for assessing an organization s readiness for ERP implementation. Some reference papers are posted on LMES (folder G) to give you a head start on completing this assignment. b. ERP system selection is one of the most important decisions in the implementation process. Identify and describe three top criteria for selecting an ERP system. Some reference papers are posted on LMES (folder G) to give you a head start on completing this assignment.

5 Assignment #2 Choose one of the contemporary issues (CRM, SCM, open source ERP, SOA, and SaaS) as discussed in class and describe its current trend and development. To illustrate the importance of the issue, it will be helpful if you include an example application software or company. Some reference papers are posted on LMES (folders J, K, L, O, and P) to give you a head start on completing this assignment. Extra ERP Lab Assignment (Optional) Assignment #3 Integrated business process using Microsoft Dynamics AX. Write your answer on the provided answer sheet (released after Day 10). Note that if you choose to complete this optional assignment, your overall assignment grade will be determined by the top two of all assignments.
