34 Gordon Allport s work demonstrated the importance of intrinsic orientation to religion and its relationship to intension of future involvement in the church. He developed the intrinsic/ extrinsic scales used widely in studies seeking to understand the role of religion in the adolescent as he/she enters young adult years. His work led to the theory that intrinsic orientation to religion was an excellent predictor of whether or not a teenager would continue to be involved in their religion as an young adult. (Allport, 1950; Gillespie et al., 2004)
