2 New Technology for the Digital Consumer Consumer attitudes and behaviours in the telecoms space have changed dramatically in the last decade. In the past, we used our mobiles sporadically for calls and messaging. Now, we re a society attached to our smartphones day in, day out, using them as a gateway to one another and to the Internet. New studies have revealed that typical smartphone user checks their device an average 221 times a day amounting to over 1,500 times a week. Whether it s checking the weather, sending s or accessing Facebook it s obvious we re addicted to mobile data consumption. Today, traditional Communication Service Providers (CSP s) conduct fewer than 20% of transactions online. But in the near future, Digital Service Providers (DSP s) will emerge that are handling up to 80% of customer transactions online, much like Amazon and other Internet-based brands already do. The speed at which new propositions and products can be rolled out also sets DSP s apart they are more agile, and operate in world of shorter and cheaper development cycles providing more opportunity to experiment. The transition to digital will dramatically reduce the cost to serve each customer while improving both the overall experience and operating margins. Digital customers prefer self-service which reduces the dependency on traditional customer support operations, legacy IT systems and outdated workflow processes. Mobile self-care apps and digital channels will offer full transparency to the consumer and enterprise, these apps will allow the end user to share balances, manage their accounts and purchase new services instantly. Carrier networks are the cornerstone of the app economy, so while any one industry might experience a five-fold increase in customer transaction volumes as they leverage mobile networks and apps, the service provider is handling these increases across all industries along with increasing amounts of instant messaging and next generation communications. This has an extreme multiplying effect on the transaction volumes and processing loads the service provider must handle, putting them in a unique and challenging position to deal with the surge in digital transactions. As the app economy continues to expand, traditional BSS technology is breaking down under the load and complexity of this new market. With the number of online transactions increasing exponentially, the need to shift to new real-time technologies is now crucial to give CSP s the network flexibility necessary to handle the influx of connected customers, services and transactions. 5 Contention-Free In-Memory Database MATRIXX Software provides a solution to the data contention and performance issues suffered by other commercial in-memory databases. Traditional in-memory databases were designed to work efficiently for read-intensive applications. They utilize heavy-weight locking and do not allow parallel write transactions to the same piece of data. This has a negative impact on efficiency and throughput for online transaction processing, a write intensive application.
