1 IN AMERICA October 10 and 11, 2014 The Elizabeth Coleman Center for the Advancement of Public Action BENNINGTON COLLEGE
2 INCARCERATION IN AMERICA Too many Americans go to too many prisons for far too long and for no truly good law enforcement reason. Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General, at the American Bar Association s House of Delegates in San Francisco The United States has the highest documented rate of incarceration in the world, a rate that has increased by more than 400 percent in the past 40 years. In response to this crisis, Bennington College will host a two-day conference at the Center for the Advancement of Public Action (CAPA) focused on improving the justice and incarceration system in America. The conference is part of an ongoing initiative on incarceration, which includes public lectures, developing curriculum, collaborations with other institutions, and opportunities for students and participants to exchange ideas and to generate solutions. CENTER for the ADVANCEMENT of PUBLIC ACTION Poverty, war, the environment, public health, mass incarceration, the struggle for democracy, the state of education itself imagine an education where learning is organized and driven by the urgent need to respond to these crises and to advance the quality of public life. The Elizabeth Coleman Center for the Advancement of Public Action (CAPA) at Bennington College offers a new model for undergraduate study, one that is organized around increasing the abilities of our graduates to take effective action in the world on matters of great human concern. To do so, the world s most urgent problems provide faculty and students with an alternative to traditional disciplines as sources of coherence and legitimacy in a liberal education. And by transforming the classroom into a laboratory for solving urgent public issues, the ideal of the educated citizen replaces the model of the expert as the goal of a liberal education. The Incarceration in America conference, and the curriculum on incarceration that surrounds it, exemplify CAPA s central commitment to the power of thought in informing action and the importance of action in shaping thought.
