4 University of Wisconsin Eau Claire French Introductory Advising Guide About the major: French is used as an official language by 130 million people and is the only language other than English spoken on five continents. French is one of the official working languages of the European Union and its institutions, the International Labor Bureau, the International Monetary Fund, the International Olympic Committee, UNESCO, and the United Nations. Because of the importance of the French language, graduates seeking careers in business, communication, education, entertainment, government agencies, journalism, management, marketing, medicine, and travel will greatly benefit from their competency in French. There are two choices within the French major, liberal arts and teaching. The teaching program certifies the student to teach French in grades 1 through 12 (Early Adolescence through Adolescence). Majors: French liberal arts French teaching Minors: French French teaching Certificate: French Proficiency Required GE or University courses: Liberal arts majors follow the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (most choose the B.A.). The General Education requirements differ depending on the degree, so the student should consult the Catalog. Teaching majors have more specific G.E. requirements, including: GE IA: CJ 202 GE IB: Math course with a C or higher GE II: A biology and a physical science required GE III: Pols 110 (American National Politics); Psyc 261 GE IV: Must include one course from Fine Arts (GEIVA) and one literature (GE IVD) GE V: ES 385 Notes about General Education French language courses can be used to fulfill G.E. IA for liberal arts majors. French literature and civilization courses can be used to fulfill G.E. IVD No more than 10 credits from any one prefix may be counted toward G.E. requirements. Essential Courses: The following is a suggested sequence of required courses for French majors, which allows students to graduate in four years. Please note that not all courses are offered every semester. This suggested course sequence assumes no prior preparation in French. ALL MAJORS First Year: FREN 101 and FREN 102 Second Year: FREN 201 in Fall and Pau Study Abroad in Pau in Spring for FREN 202, FREN 315 and FREN electives. Third Year: Fall: FREN 325 (Phonetics and Pronunciation) and two courses at the 300 level such as FREN 335, FREN 340 and FREN 345 depending on what is offered. Spring: two courses at the 300 level such as FREN 361 or FREN 362 and FREN 354 or FREN 355 depending on what is offered. Fourth Year: Fall: one course at the 300 level such as FREN 361 or FREN 362 and FREN 354 or FREN 355 depending on what is offered and one course at the 400 level such as FREN 401 and FREN 450 depending on what is offered. Spring: one course at the 300 level such as FREN 361 or FREN 362 and FREN 354 or FREN 355 depending on what is offered and one course at the 400 level such as FREN 401 and FREN 450 depending on what is offered.

5 Information for exploring students: Join the French Club (Le Salon Français) for social and cultural events and weekly conversation tables. Admission: French teaching majors must be admitted into the College of Education and Human Sciences. See the Early Childhood to Adolescence (ECA) First Year Advising sheet or the University Catalog for requirements. To be eligible for the pre-program, in which a student should be enrolled their sophomore year, (ES 212, Initial Teaching Experience in Elementary, Middle and High School Settings), a student must pass the Pre-professional Skills Test (PPST), complete the university writing requirement, have at least a 2.75 resident and total GPA and have earned 14 credits by the time they register for the courses. Contact information: Dr. Jessica Miller Hibbard Humanities Hall 355 (715) millerjs@uwec.edu For a sample 4 year plan & information about careers: Certificate Program The Certificate Program in French Proficiency provides students with practical and professional language skills in French, complementing majors in all other disciplines and strengthening the prospects of students who intend to pursue careers or graduate study in the many areas in which proficiency in French is useful. The certificate requires 13 credits beyond French 201. Helpful Tips: Students wishing to graduate in four years may have to take two or three courses in one semester, unless they are placed at an advanced level in their freshman year. They should consult with their adviser to determine what combinations are best. Students who take courses in Pau may repeat them for credit towards the major/minor here at UWEC (one time only) upon their return. This should allow students to stay on track for graduation in four years. Teaching majors are required to study abroad. UW-Eau Claire respects individual differences. This guide complements rather than substitutes for individual advising. For instructions about how to declare this major:

6 Sample 4 year Degree Plan catalog French, Liberal Arts, B.A. The following is a hypothetical schedule for a Bachelor of Arts degree for a French, Liberal Arts major. It is based on the Catalog. It assumes no transferred credits, no requirements waived by placement tests, and no courses taken in the summer. The Department of Foreign Languages cannot guarantee that all courses will be offered as shown, but it will provide a range of courses that will enable prepared students to fulfill their requirements in a four-year period. The minor elective courses below are placeholders. Each minor has its own requirements beyond the number of credits, and it is the student s responsibility to investigate those and to be sure to have fulfilled those requirements.
