Economics is a different discipline from business administration. However, there are substantial overlaps. Both disciplines study the behavior of individuals and business firms within the context of market, legal, and other institutions. Economics tends to emphasize the workings of the institutions from the viewpoint of the larger society. While business tends to emphasize the workings of the institutions from the viewpoint of a business enterprise. Campuses require at least one semester/quarter of Calculus, most require two semesters, and UCSD requires three quarters. Some campuses accept Business Calculus, but most require Analytic Geometry & Calculus. Check Assist for information regarding major preparation, GPA, grade requirements, additional approved and recommended courses for the major. GPA varies for each campus. Admission to the pre major does not guarantee admission to full major status. 19

These majors cover a wide variety of subjects and focus on specific areas of business (information analysis), industry (environment), or economics (regional/global based). Major preparation courses, and recommended GPA, vary widely. It is important to consult with admissions representatives, Assist and department websites for specific requirements and competitiveness for admission. Other Business Related Majors: Environmental Economics and Policy, UCB: This major offers an opportunity to explore aspects of economic and political institutions that affect the development and management of natural resources and the environment. The program takes a problemsolving approach to issues involving renewable and fixed natural resources, and it is based on a foundation in microeconomic theory and the economics of resources and the environment. Political Economy, UCB: This major examines the relationship between politics and economics in modern societies, focusing on problems of both domestic and international policy. The curriculum is both multi and interdisciplinary and is based on the assumption that political economic relationships are affected by society, culture, geography, and demographics. Business Information Management, UCI: The program seeks to educate students to understand and then apply the theories and concepts of a broad, integrated curriculum covering computing, informatics, business fundamentals, and analytical decision making. Administrative Studies Economics, UCR: Examines the factors determining national income, inflation, unemployment, output, growth and inequality as well as the behavior of individual decision making units like households and firms, the role of markets, money and interest rates, the forces affecting international trade, and other problems of production and distribution. Business Informatics, UCR: Covers the core of computer science and basic business and management topics. It prepares students for careers in design and management of computer and information systems, system and network administration, and e commerce. It is also useful for careers that apply information technology to support business processes. Economics and Accounting, UCSB: The accounting program consistently graduates students who perform exceptionally well on the CPA exam. Due to the combination of accounting and economics taught to those completing the emphasis in accounting, our students are actively recruited throughout the year by corporations and public accounting firms, including the four leading international accounting firms. International Studies Economics, UCSD: This program challenges students to explore the processes and consequences of interactions among institutions and individuals at the international and national, and global and local levels. This major is interdisciplinary in nature and a student could choose Economics as their Disciplinary Focus. Environmental Studies Economics, UCSC: This major is intended to provide students with the basic tools of economics analysis and an understanding of the mechanics of resource production, conservation, and use, in both ecological and economic terms. Global Economics, UCSC: Global Economics majors study economics in the context of a particular geographic area, incorporating language study, area study, and study abroad into their academic plan. Students who complete the program will develop a sound understanding of economics in an international context, focusing particularly on one geographic area. The program also increases the educational opportunities of undergraduates to develop critical thinking skills and gain experiential learning opportunities in the area of international economics. 20

Business related minors can help expose students to the field especially if they have a non business/economics related major. This will later help students when applying to graduate school in business/finance/economics fields. Minor lower division requirements vary and can include microeconomics, macroeconomics, accounting, calculus, statistics. Minors can be declared after meeting specific requirements or may be required to apply in cases of limited enrollment. The following minors are multi disciplinary in nature and have a focus in technology: Technology Management (UCSC) focuses on integration of engineering, computer science, information technology and business management. Technology Management (UCD) focuses on learning business and management skills that will enable a student to use and apply their engineering and science education more effectively in today s competitive technology arena. UC Santa Barbara offers an undergraduate Technology Management Certificate program. For more information go to 21

4 Courses That Can Prepare You For An MBA 1. Quantitative Methods and Analysis Regardless of your MBA specialization, you are going to have to take some type of quantitative or math course during the program. Even MBA programs with a specialization in marketing or management, for example, require students to take courses in statistics, financial analysis and accounting principles. If it s been years since you ve done any type of math, it might be worth enrolling in an introductory or review type class through an extension program in order to brush up on your basic equations; in fact, if the programs you re applying to require that you take the GMAT, consider taking a course in math review, algebra or calculus before you take the test to improve your score and chances of getting in. 2. Management Most MBA programs include a specialized management class, dedicated to topics such as operations management, human resources management or financial management. Having a grasp of the fundamental principles before you enroll in a specialized or topical management course will help you better apply your new knowledge; you won t be behind the curve because you aren t familiar with the basic vocabulary or principles, for example. 3. Economics and Finance Economics is another subject area in which it s good to have a solid background before attempting graduate level coursework. Understanding basic principles of both micro and macroeconomics will allow you to spend time gaining new knowledge and applying new skills. The same goes for finance. Basic financial principles are the same no matter which industry you re working in. Understanding how to use financial data for analysis and prediction before you start applying industry specific principles will give you a broader base from which to work and help you avoid frustration and confusion. 4. Computer Skills Chances are you know how to use basic computer programs, but if your skills with a program like Excel extend to listmaking or mail merges, then a basic training course in how to perform advanced spreadsheet functions might be in order before you enroll in business school. In a finance or accounting course, for example, you might receive a data set to analyze or interpret, and without a basic knowledge of how to use formulas in a computerized program or even where they can be found will impede your progress. Some MBA programs offer a business school preparation or refresher course for new students who might not have a background in business or who have been out of the field for some time. If your school does not offer such a program, contact your local university extension, community college or look online for appropriate courses that will get you up to speed. Do not expect to transfer credits from these programs to your MBA, though, as most are taught at the undergraduate level and will not transfer. Earning an MBA is a major achievement, and you can make the process more fulfilling and be more successful by thinking ahead and anticipating the areas where you might have some trouble. If you re planning to go back to school, take courses that will prepare you for advanced study and start off your MBA studies on the right foot. 23

Effective oral and written communication Business professionals must be able to effectively articulate ideas and plans on paper, online and in person Creative innovation The ability to think about alternatives Experience (Co ops and internships provide that while you re in college.) English; Linguistics; Historical, Cultural and Literary Studies; Foreign Languages These majors instill precise writing, critical reading, textual analysis, persuasion and broad communication skills as they foster an appreciation of national and international diversity and a knowledge of foreign cultures. These majors prepare students for a wide range of endeavors requiring the ability to reason critically, communicate effectively, work in teams and understand complex relationships. 24

1. Consider your interests. What about business appeals to you? Are you a numbercruncher? Do you have a persuasive personality? Are you a team leader? Do you have an entrepreneurial spirit? Simply knowing you want a career in business isn t enough; think about your specific interests to begin to identify a specific business track. 2. Understand the skills sought by businesses. The primary skills required of successful business professionals are not necessarily business specific. We will later discuss the desired skills for business 3. Consider a wide range of majors. Assessing your interests and understanding the skills you ll need will help you find the major that is right for you. You need to choose a major you will enjoy, you will do better academically. 4. Get on the job training. Businesses constantly seek a competitive advantage; you should plan to do the same. Co ops and internships present critical opportunities to experience a career while still a student. Many students leverage a co op or internship to secure a job offer upon graduation. 5. Consider graduate school. Business professionals in every business track often find that an undergraduate degree isn t enough. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) may be in your future. MBAs come from every conceivable undergraduate background; in fact, an MBA can be a powerful complement to a bachelor s degree outside of business. 25

Does the Admissions Committee favor certain undergraduate majors or recommend certain undergraduate courses? No particular area of undergraduate preparation is required, but a completion of a US bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university, or the equivalent is required. You must have completed 16 years of education in order to be eligible to apply to the MBA Program. What factors are considered in admissions decisions? The Admissions Committee evaluates your academic potential, professional promise and personal qualities. These factors are not listed in order of importance, and we look at each candidate individually. The Admissions Committee s goal is to assemble a class of students who will bring diverse perspectives to the learning environment. 26

Peter Thiel Thiel studied 20th century philosophy as an undergraduate at Stanford University. He received his B.A. in Philosophy from Stanford in 1989 and acquired a J.D. from Stanford Law School in [13] An avowed libertarian, he founded The Stanford Review in 1987 along with Norman Book. The Stanford Review became famous for challenging campus mores including political correctness and laws against hate speech. The Stanford Review is now the university's main conservative/libertarian newspaper. Thiel formed friendships with other students at Stanford, many of whom contributed to the Stanford Review. These include Keith Rabois, David O. Sacks, and Reid Hoffman. Some of these friends later took up jobs at PayPal (co founded by Thiel) and became part of the PayPal Mafia.
