2 GENERAL INFORMATION Course Authorization Course authorization has been granted by the New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of Fire Standards and Training & Emergency Medical Services, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Saturday classes will start at 0800 (8AM) and end at 1600 (4 PM). Required Texts All textbooks will be provided as part of the program tuition. Jones & Bartlett. General Course Objectives Develop the skills necessary to provide prehospital emergency medical care. Develop the skills to properly assess and treat both life threatening and non-life threatening illnesses and injuries in the pre-hospital setting. Develop the skills to provide care and comfort to patients. Prepare the student to be competent as an entry-level EMS provider. Provide a knowledge base for advanced emergency medical training. Prepare the student to successfully pass the NH EMR practical examination and the National Registry EMR examination. Philosophy We try to provide the best environment possible for students to learn the didactic material and psychomotor skills to become certified as a Emergency Medical Responder in the State of New Hampshire. We will be as fair as possible and give every opportunity for students to excel in the course. However, we also believe that students MUST be prepared to give the time and energy to the course by coming to class ready to learn and by participating in practice sessions; this means students will have read the assigned chapter prior to coming to class. 3 We REQUIRE students to conduct themselves in a professional manner in the classroom/in the lab. This course requires a great deal of TIME and STUDY. It is very difficult to catch up if you fall behind by missing class. This course follows the DOT (Department of Transportation) standards; therefore, it is to THOSE standards the course will be conducted. Finally, we encourage an environment of open communication, so feel free to discuss any problems or concerns you may have. Course Goals The course is designed to instruct students to the level of Emergency Medical Responder, who serve as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. After successful completion of the program, the student will be capable of performing the following functions at the minimum entry level. Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care. Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient's condition. Lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury. Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description. The content of this course includes the following subject matter: Overview of the human body Medical-Legal-Legal Issues of EMS Assessing Emergency Scenes and prehospital victims American Heart Association Health Care Provider Certification Illness and Injury Emergency Care Emergency Childbirth and Pediatric Emergencies Emergency Services Operations TUITION The tuition for the course is $450. Tuition includes; required texts, CPR Card, Pocket Mask, reference materials, handouts and initial practical exam fees. NREMT Computer Based Testing via Pearson-Vue will be the responsibility of the student. Tuition payment in full is required by the first night of class. HOW TO SUCCEED IN EMT CLASS Motivation You want to help people in need of emergency medical care. You are considering a career in medicine and want to use the EMR class as an introduction. 4 EMR certification meets a requirement for employment. Attitude Conduct yourself in a manner in which you would expect other healthcare professionals to. Have an open mind to new techniques, ideas or thoughts of other students or faculty. Take responsibility for your actions or lack of actions. Take initiative to answer questions and ask questions. Risk being wrong, it is a normal part of the educational process. Academics, Class Preparation & Code of Conduct Read the required materials in the text prior to class. If you do not understand something, ask for help! Take good notes and make flashcards of terms and treatments. Form study groups and study with your classmates. Respect other students and instructors we well as their opinions. Practice skills continuously throughout the course. Attend classes in their entirety and participate in discussions and practical skills. Pagers, cell phones and other electronic devices shall be on silent mode. Use of cell phones during class and clinical time is prohibited. Any behavior deemed by the Instructor as inappropriate or disruptive may result in suspension or expulsion from the program. Such decisions will be made at the sole discretion of the course Instructor/Coordinator. The lead instructor for a class session reserves the right to dismiss a student from the class session for inappropriate behavior. Removal from a clinical site will result in a failure of that component of the program. EMR TRAINING & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS Summary In order to become eligible for EMR licensing in NH each student must meet the following requirements: Possess current AHA Healthcare Provider or ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification. Complete the EMR class with a passing grade meeting all the attendance and clinical requirements. Pass all stations of the State of NH EMR practical examination. Pass the National Registry EMR computer based test. Students will be responsible to pay the testing and certifications fees to the NREMT (must be at least 18 years of age on the day of the exam). o Please note that the NREMT excludes persons convicted of certain felonies to be certified as an EMS provider. Any student who has been convicted of a felony should consult the Instructor and NREMT for guidance. Emergency Medical Responder Certification Course 3

5 CPR Training As a part of this EMR class you may receive Healthcare Provider level CPR training. After successful completion of the written and practical examinations you will receive certification from the American Heart Association. EMR Course Requirements Online Learning Management System The Emergency Medical Responder course will rely on an online learning management system provided by the textbook publisher. Students should expect to be able to complete interactive lectures and quizzes online. Students should be familiar with using web browsers. Students are required to have an address which is regularly accessed. Students should have access to a modern computer with Internet access in order to be successful in this program. The online system requires either a PC/Mac computer or other flash capable device. The learning management system will include the chapter lesson outline, class PowerPoint presentations, an interactive lecture, chapter audio book, pretest, key tem flashcards and crossword puzzles. You will be required to complete the chapter quiz and interactive lecture. Depending on your ability, each chapter will required about one hour of time to complete the interactive lecture and quiz. Attendance All students should attend every class and practical sessions in their entirety. Although, it is understood that there are situations that do arise that justify absenteeism. Students may be absent from twelve (12) hours of class time. Students are responsible for all materials covered while they are absent. Tardiness that exceeds fifteen (15) minutes may be counted as an absence. Regular tardiness less than 15 minutes will be addressed on a case-by-case basis and the time missed may accumulate to an absence. Students who miss more than eight (8) hours of class time as a result of accident or personal emergency should speak with the instructor as soon as possible for a quick resolution. Each student absent in excess eight (8) hours may be required to submit in writing the reasons for the absence to the course instructor. Formal documentation for the absences may be required. An attendance roster shall be distributed at every class meeting for student signatures at the start of the class. It is the responsibility of the student to sign the roster. Students who do not sign the roster will be considered absent. Students must be present through the entire class to receive credit for attendance. Responding to calls from class is prohibited and absence as a result of being on an emergency call will be recorded as un-excused. Evening class sessions are considered three hours of class time. Saturdays will primarily be extensive lab-practical days and attendance will be taken on those days. Saturday class sessions are considered eight (8) hours of class time. Students who are absent from a scheduled written test, quiz or practical exam will be allowed to make up the exam if: Emergency Medical Responder Certification Course 4

6 1. The student requests in writing, to the instructor, no later than 5 days prior to the exam to be absent for the exam, or, 2. An immediate emergency prevents the student from attending the examination and the student informs the instructor in person, by phone (answering machine acceptable) or of the emergency as soon as it is possible to do so. Written documentation will be required. Grading A minimum grade of eighty percent (80%) class average will be required for a student to pass the program. A grade less than eighty percent will constitute failure of the program. Students grades will be figured in the following manner: Average of Quiz grades 40% Workbook 20% Interactive Lecture 20% Final Written/Practical Exam 20% TOTAL 100% Quizzes Each chapter will have a quiz. Each chapter quiz is required to be completed within seven (7) day of the chapter classroom lecture. The quiz will be taken through the online learning management system outside of the scheduled class time. The student s lowest quiz score will be dropped. However, zero percents earned by missing a quiz will not be dropped. Workbooks Each chapter has a corresponding chapter in the student workbook. Students will be required to complete the corresponding chapter in the student workbook within 7 days of the classroom lecture. Interactive Lecture Each chapter has a corresponding interactive lecture in the online learning management system. The interactive lecture is required to be completed prior to the classroom lecture for the given chapter. Final Written Examination A comprehensive final written exam will be administered. This exam will count as 20% of the student s final grade. WMD/Terrorism/Hazmat/Incident Command System As a prerequisite, students are required to complete WMD/Terrorism Awareness for Emergency Medical Responders, ICS-100 and ICS-700 prior to completing the program. Certificates will be required to be given to the instructor before be listed as complete on the Bureau of EMS class roster. These programs can be completed online. 7 REPORTING TO THE NH BUREAU OF EMS This certification course is regulated by the New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of Fire Standards and Training & Emergency Medical Services, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services as outlined in NH Administrative Rules section Saf-C These rules require that the Instructor/Coordinator report student status as Complete, Fail or Incomplete within 10 days of course completion. Students who meet the academic and clinical requirements outlined above will be reported as Complete. Students who do not meet the academic and clinical requirements outlined above will be reported as Fail. The Instructor/Coordinator may allow a student not greater than 90 days after the course end date to complete the academic and clinical requirements in extraordinary situations. This extension must be pre-approved by the Instructor/Coordinator and all requests for extensions must be made in writing. In these situations students will be reported as Incomplete until all academic are met a status of Complete will then be reported. Failure to meet the academic within 90 days will result in the student being reported with a status of Fail. 9 Emergency Medical Responder Winter 2014 Course I have read and fully understand the guidelines for completing and passing the EMR Certification course including all guidelines in reference to attendance for the class and clinical time for the course which I am enrolled. Furthermore, I understand that all patient information gathered during clinical time, including, but not limited to; name, age, medical history, medical condition and injury or illness circumstances is strictly confidential. I understand that disclosure or discussion of this confidential material outside of the clinical observation will result in disciplinary action up to, and including, dismissal from the training program.
