6 Projects Related to Historic Preservation The City of Miai is hoe to 2 National Historic Landarks National Historic Landark status is the highest designation awarded on a national level by the US Park Service to sites which are iportant to the history of this country Vizcaya Museu and Gardens is one of these National Historic Landarks Vizcaya Museu and Gardens fronts on Biscayne Bay and is a 5 inute drive fro Downtown Miai Because of this the neighborhood surrounding Vizcaya has been in high deand for redevelopent When new developent occurs close to Vizcaya there is the possibility that the new developent will ipact the Vizcaya National Historic Landark and the visitors experience at Vizcaya in a negative way My involveent as a lawyer in defeating one such proposed new developent which threatened the Vizcaya National Historic Landark caused e to consider whether there could be a proactive protection given to National Historic Landarks in Miai s Code Such protection would not adversely affect private property rights and would also put proposed developers on notice before they designed their projects of the special considerations required when developing near a National Historic Landark This evaluation led e to propose View Corridor protection for National Historic Landarks which cae to be codified as part of Miai 21 Not only is Miai s View Corridor legislation protecting to Miai there is nothing the National Historic Landarks unique coparable in Florida This View Corridor Protection legislation puts Miai on par with other cities which protect their heritage sites and National Historic Landarks Having protected the View Corridors of and fro its National Historic Landarks akes Miai a leader in developing creative solutions for Historic Preservation within the City Since 2009 I have served as pro bono counsel to and worked with a group of citizens who have volunteered tie and resources to save the Miai Marine Stadiu a public property which has received historic designation fro the City of Miai HEP Board and ilps 01so been designated one of the 11 ost endangered historic cce by the National Trust for Historic Preservation o z rn n N GenHistoricProjects wpd c zr t
