2 20 th Century Design & Selected Items from a Paris Interior PIASA are delighted to announce the sale of 20 th Century Design and Selected Items from a Paris Interior, to be held at PIASA Rive Gauche on 21 January This first sale of the year runs to 233 lots and will focus on leading masters of Modern and Contemporary Design, along with a collection of Modern Pictures. Interior of a Paris Apartment The sale begins with the Contents of a Paris Interior, imaginatively blending decorative art, Design and post-war works down to the current day. The varied collection is imbued with audacious French style, reflects the owner s rare discoveries and personal taste. Highlights include modern drawings by Yves Tanguy, Jules Lismonde, Charles Lapicque, Olivier Debré, Guillaume Corneille and Hans Arp, alongside charcoal drawings by Victor Brauner that exude the poetic vocabulary of Dadaism (est ). 3 The Decorative Art section features several tables by Ado Chale, consigned for sale directly from the Belgian designer s own studio some in cast aluminium (est. 20,000-30,000), others topped in gilt-bronze (est. 25,000-35,000 the pair) along with three gilt-bronze dishes (est ) and an amazingly dynamic aluminium sculpture. Also of note are a Louvre ceiling-light typical of the work of Poul Hennigsen; Hans J. Wegner s Flag Halyard chair (est ,000); and a startling Cible (Target) table jointly designed by Jean Prouvé and Jules Leleu, made in the Ateliers de Jean Prouvé around 1935 (est. 12,000-18,000). Meanwhile an Armchair designed by Secession founder Josef Hoffmann in 1899 (est ,000) and a Thebes stool designed by Adolf Loos (est ) engage in a contrasting Viennese dialogue. 4 Modern & Contemporary Design Modern and Contemporary Design of varied provenance includes a Line Vautrin Sunburst mirror (est. 10,000-15,000); a coffee-table (est ) and console (est ) by Gilbert Poillerat; and a two-branch wall-light by Serge Mouille (est. 10,000-15,000). A sycamore, glass and bronze dining-table by Jacques Quinet (est. 18,000-22,000) rubs shoulders with a pair of Modernist armchairs by Marcel Coard (est ); Jean Prouvé s Antony bookcase (est. 15,000-20,000); a highly graphic UFO ceiling-light by Verner Pantone (est. 35,000-45,000); and an Ettore Sottsass totem (est. 12,000-18,000). After the record 43,900 taken for an Armand Jonckers table on 18 June 2013, PIASA will be offering three of his brass and resin coffee-tables, which are again sure to catch the imagination of collectors (est ,000/ 12,000-18,000). The quality of the items in the sale confirms both PIASA s ability to offer major private collections, and status as leader in the field of post-war Design in France a status acquired in only the firm s first year of activity in the field. Scenography The scenography for the auction s viewing has been assigned to the young interior decorator Sandra Benhamou, back in France after undertaking a host of eye-catching projects in the U.K. and the United States. Sandra Benhamou s unique flair for mise en scène is inherited from years spent working in cinema. In the words of Jérôme Aumont, she strives to add polish to every line in the script: the way one enters a space, the story it has to tell, and the motionless journey it invites us to take. 4
