1 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH GEORGIA College of Education Spring 2014 PERFORMANCE-BASED LEADERSHIP (PL) ADD-ON OPTIONS Certification Only Professional Learning Units The School of Education offers the Performance-Based Leadership Add-on Program to candidates holding the EDS or Doctorate degree in educational leadership and related teaching and service fields (e.g., English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, School Counseling). Certification only candidates enter in the fall semester and complete their program in four (4) semesters. Courses are delivered in a variety of formats including online, weekend, and condensed summer sessions. Performance-based leadership add-on candidates must submit the FIELD COACH/SUPERVISOR ACCEPTANCE FORM from a local school system verifying candidates serve in leadership roles as defined by their local systems. Examples of these roles include, but are not limited to team leader, grade chair, department chair, SACS team chair, academic coach, school improvement team leader, athletic director, assistant principal, principal, curriculum coordinator, or special education director. Pre-Service Educational Leadership Requirement Prior to enrolling in required coursework, a candidate must meet the Georgia Professional Standards Commission pre-service requirement for performance-based leadership preparation by holding a clear/renewable Leadership (L) certificate at the master s level or higher, OR holding a master's degree in Educational Leadership, OR completing TCHL 7008 (Ethical and Legal Implications for Leadership) and TCHL7002, (Developing Leadership Capacity in Schools and Communities). Topics addressed in these courses include school law and ethics, organizational leadership, teaching and learning, and using data for school improvement. 1
2 Leadership Certification only Candidates can enter one of two courses of study, depending upon their qualifications. These courses of study are listed below as Option A and Option B. Option A: 17 Professional Learning Units (PLUs) Candidates with an EDS or Doctorate in Education Leadership have the opportunity to become certified in performance-based leadership (PL) at the building or system level. The program includes 5 PLUs of leadership coursework and 12 PLUs of advanced performance-based internship in the candidate s school or system. For admission to the program the candidate must: Hold a specialist or doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with content specialization in school leadership, administration and supervision. Be employed in a leadership role as defined by the local system Submit the Graduate Application Form and Letter of Recommendation from local school principal or district Submit a signed System Supervisor Acceptance Form. 3 Option B PLUs (plus 6 semester hours of transfer credit) Candidates with an EDS or Doctorate in teaching or service fields have the opportunity to become certified in performance-based leadership (PB) at the building or system level. The program includes 20 PLUs of leadership course work (plus 6 semester hours transferred in from previous coursework after transcript analysis; additional PLUs may be required if no courses are transferrable) and 12 PLUs of advanced performance-based work in the candidate s school or system. For admission to the program the candidate must: Hold a specialist or doctorate degree in teaching or service fields from an accredited college or university Be employed in a leadership role as defined by the local system Submit the Graduate Application Form and Letter of Recommendation from local school principal or district Hold a valid Georgia certificate Submit a signed System Supervisor Acceptance Form. 3
