7 Waterloo MBA program formats Accelerate your career with the Full-time or Part-time MBA Option WATERLOo Full-time 12 Months The full-time one year MBA program allows you the opportunity to complete the degree quickly while taking a short break from the work place. This format begins in the middle of August completing the following August. The first term is the integrated core, followed by two terms of electives. Candidates will complete a general MBA degree, or one of ten fields of study in the one year program. WATERLOO Part-time evenings 3.3 years The part-time evening program allows you the opportunity to combine work, study and personal life in a convenient schedule. This format begins every September with candidates attending classes two nights a week, from 7:00pm to 9:50pm all year round. Candidates will complete a general MBA degree, or one of ten fields of study in the part-time evening program. Combining an MBA with my engineering degree took me from a job to a career. Candidates will complete five terms, which includes the Integrated core curriculum and two fully paid co-op work terms. We know that it is imperative to create a generation of students with the skills and experience that will be relevant to innovative, growing, entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial organizations. This is key to our country s future. Laurier follows a well-established definition of entrepreneurship. It is a mindset or behaviour that can identify opportunities, and build and create new enterprise. You will proceed through pre-determined benchmarks in the program, while creating a real enterprise for a course credit in your MBA degree. The MBA I&E program has two options to choose from, that are to be completed during the degree. One option supports the incubation and launch of real businesses, owned and operated by students. The second option provides you with the opportunity to work within an existing entrepreneurial business environment. Students apply for entry to the I&E program after the Integrated core and this option may be completed in full-time, full-time with Co-op or part-time Waterloo. Network with other professionals in the Part-time alternate weekend MBA TORONTO PART-TIME Alternate WEEKENDS 3.3 Years At Laurier we know we have the best part-time executive style schedule that delivers a full content MBA degree. Our alternate weekend format allows you to attend classes on alternating weekends, while balancing your family life, work and study. Classes are held Friday 7:00pm to 9:30pm, Saturday 8:15am to 5:15pm, Sunday free, alternate weekends, twice a month, seven times a term. There are no classes during the summer months of July and August. It takes 3.3 years to complete the full graduate degree. Candidates will complete a general MBA, one of ten fields, or one of two designations in the Toronto part-time alternate weekend format. Our graduates consistently rank among the highest in Canada in terms of successful pass rates and scores on the CMA Board Report and Case Exam. Real work experience with the Applied Business Research Consulting Project My applied business research project allowed me to apply the various concepts and skills I have learned throughout the MBA program to an actual real-life business situation that was occurring at Edward Jones. This is your opportunity to consult on a real-life strategic management issue with a company of your choice. You get hands-on experience during the study period to apply your classroom learning in a live business scenario, tackling real issues that are diverse and challenging. You ll work in a group of four to six MBA candidates, you will be guided by a faculty member, and graded on the degree to which your strategy provides real value to your client. The school s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, faculty support, and business plan competitions collectively ensured that my dream became a reality. While doing my MBA I co-launched my own company, Tickettrunk Inc., with another MBA candidate. Not only did I become my own boss, I learned how to be a community leader. During the summer I worked in Tanzania with Operation Tech Start, a new NGO bringing information technology to the rural areas of Tanzania to improve the lives of farmers and their children. I developed micro-finance models for future applications that will bring benefits to all parties, particularly the 40 percent of Tanzanians who live on less than $2 a day. Unique to our MBA program, it is designed so that each of you will experience the management issues within the volunteer community. Ultimately you will achieve a renewed understanding of this often ignored segment of the global economy, and an exciting awareness of the potential for managerial and competitive benefits of involvement in the not-for-profit community. You can choose to do a 40-hour practicum with a local organization, or an extended international project. The Laurier MBA equipped me to live my values to the fullest extent possible. For the past 15 years I ve assisted companies all over the world with sustainability reporting and assurance, ultimately helping them improve upon the social and environmental impacts of their operations. The success of my business the most proficient assurance provider in Africa allows me to contribute a significant proportion of my time and revenue to the Soweto Marimba Youth League Trust, a youth development charity that employs music as a mechanism to keep at-risk children in school. For my Not-for-Profit Practicum I attended a local fundraiser for the Friends of the Orphans Canada. The goal was to raise donations to take to the Dominican Republic and work on building an orphanage. After speaking with some volunteers, I found out there was room available on their next trip to the DR. I volunteered right then and there. Little did I know that this fundraiser, and my MBA were going to offer me a life-changing experience! 16 International Business Study Trip elective International Summer Schools TWO-WEEK PROGRAM Open to all of our MBA candidates, the International Business study course elective is a two-week trip to experience first hand the evolving global economy. Increased globalization means business leaders must think and act in an international context. As a Laurier MBA student you will experience first-hand the implications of doing business outside of our domestic borders. Each year our students have the opportunity to take part in a two-week excursion that includes participation in company tours, and business meetings in the host country, giving you valuable insight to differences and similarities in culture, and their impact on business decisions. Laurier is connected to several MBA summer schools. This is your opportunity to earn an elective credit towards your Laurier MBA degree in another country, while networking with MBA students from all over the world. You may consider Essam in Denmark, Euromed in France, or you are welcome to bring forward a summer school option of your own choosing. Visit and to learn more. I highly recommend the International trip to gain direct exposure to the complexity of conducting business in another country. You will find the cultural subtleties enlightening and return to campus with a fresh global perspective. I participated in the MBA summer school in Belgium. This gave me the opportunity to interact with students from all around the world, while at the same time enhancing my understanding of international business in a different classroom setting. It introduces employers to experienced alumni applicants for positions with immediate availability. When I was considering potential career options, I benefitted from the self-assessment tools and the one-on-one career counseling offered by Laurier s MBA Career Services. These services were instrumental in helping me successfully pursue, and gain employment in my chosen career field. Senior Portfolio Analyst, CPP Design your own Elective Unique to Laurier is the opportunity for students to tailor electives to reflect their individual areas of interest. Independent Directed Studies allow students to choose a subject topic and work with the guidance of one of Laurier s faculty. Topics can be work-related, of personal interest, or an entrepreneurial idea. Independent Directed Studies can be completed in lieu of one or two electives. Major Research Paper can be completed in lieu of three electives. How to Apply to Laurier s MBA Applicants will complete the Submission Summary form online and print that form, along with all other supplementary application forms found on the Laurier website, lauriermba.ca Applicants then complete all forms in hard copy and submit along with all the required supporting documents in hard copy to the MBA Program office. Consult the application checklist for full information. wlu.ca/gradstudies/applicationchecklist MBA Program Information General admission requirements A four year undergraduate degree or equivalent in any discipline from a recognized university with a minimum B standing (73%) in the final year of university study, or most recent 10 half-credit university degree courses. Evidence of strong quantitative skills, normally by the successful completion of the GMAT test with a score of 550 or higher. The GMAT is mandatory for all students who have completed their previous degrees outside of Canada. Letters of reference. Normally one academic reference and two professional, or all three professional with more than five years of work experience. Applicants whose language of instruction during the undergraduate degree was other than English must furnish evidence of proficiency in English prior to admission. A minimum score of 573 paper-based, 100 internet-based (with minimum skills scores of 21 in each of the four skills sets), on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or its equivalent is required. At least two years of full-time work experience. accelerated admission Qualified candidates may apply for exemption to the core component of the part-time evening format in Waterloo and the part-time weekend format in Toronto only. Accelerated admission is not offered in the full-time options. Consult the MBA Program office for admission requirements and course outlines. Evidence of strong quantitative skills, with a GMAT score of 600 or higher. The GMAT is mandatory for the co-op option. Letters of reference. Three academic references, or two academic and one professional, are required. Applicants whose language of instruction during the undergraduate degree was other than English must furnish evidence of proficiency in English prior to admission. A minimum score of 573 paper-based, 100 internet-based (with minimum skills scores of 21 in each of the four skills sets), on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or its equivalent is required. Applicants are not required to have work experience. Eligibility is limited to those with less than two years of work experience.
