3 1. INTRODUCTION Common household pests can cause damage to our homes especially clothes pests, wood destroying and gnawing pests. These pests enter our homes and work places for shelter and food and to nest and breed. These pests can also be a threat to the health and safety of our families by spreading bacteria, disease or allergens in our homes. Outlined below is a brief and precise summary on each of the most common insect pests and flies that you are likely to encounter - they can ALL be prevented, controlled or destroyed. When using insecticide dusts and liquids, please ensure that all label directions are followed precisely. Please ensure that the chemical is suitable for the target pest, all recommended protective clothing is worn and that the product is mixed and applied as per label directions. COMMON PESTS Ants Control of ants can be undertaken using insecticide sprays, dusts, baits and gels. Insecticide sprays rely on ants coming into contact with the sprayed surface to cause death. As the larvae and Queen stay at the nest and are often located in inaccessible places they will not be killed off from the spray and ongoing problems will eventuate. Baits and gels are particularly useful against ants as they are social insects that collect and pass food to the colony. This strategy introduces toxicant into hidden inaccessible nests where it is spread to all colony members, causing minimal colony fragmentation and a greater likelihood of complete colony elimination. Non toxic baiting with an attractant is not always necessary but may save time and reduce the amount of bait needed. Suitable non-toxic baits include raspberry jam, peanut butter, honey and coke. Besides baiting areas where ants have been seen, baits can be placed near water and heat sources, in close vicinity to food sources (kitchen benches, pantry s, food preparation appliances (toasters), vending machines, pet food bowls, kitchen tidies and on window sills where dead insects act as food. Roof cavities, sub floor and building perimeters are areas for larger exterior problems. Bed Bugs Feed on humans primarily but will also seek blood meals from mammals, poultry and birds. They are minute and unlikely to be spotted by the human eye, are about 4-5mm long and brown to reddish brown after feeding. They live in cracks and crevices and come out to feed at night and can travel up to 45m in search of a blood meal. Infestations usually centre around the bed but are not limited to it. They can be found around mattress buttons and beading, in bedsprings, crevices of wooden bed frames, night stands, stuffed furniture, picture frames, floorboard cracks, behind loose wallpaper, light switches, door and window frames. They are able to survive for long periods without feeding and can be trans located in laundry, luggage and clothes and transferred through human hosts. Clues to a Bed Bug infestation can be bites, a characteristic obnoxious sweet odour and white egg deposits in cracks or on rough surfaces and/or small red to reddish brown faecal spots here and there on surfaces. Recommended to call a Pest Control Technician. It is vital that an appropriate insecticide is used and that it is managed strictly to recommendations. It is also vital that all instructions given by the technician are followed precisely. In conjunction with this, clean sheets, pillow-cases and blankets should be used to remake the bed after the recommended withholding period and of course good hygiene and regular washing and vacuuming is vital in keeping these pests at bay. Carpet Beetle The adult carpet beetle is not a problem as they mostly feed on pollen and nectar, are good fliers and generally found in gardens. Only the larvae are destructive to various materials. Feeding carpet beetle larvae produce droppings that are similar to coarse sand. The larvae prefer to feed on materials of animal origin like wool, fur, hair, fabrics, carpets, underfelts, fibre-type insulating material, dried insect specimens and stored food including dried meat, seeds, grains and cereals. Control is maintaining good sanitation standards - vacuuming and cleaning of carpets, rugs, soft furnishings and upholstered surfaces frequently and the application of insecticides and dusts. 4 Common House Borer They attack only seasoned dry timber and damage is usually confined to sapwood. Commonly attacked species of wood are kahikatea, rimu and radiata pine. Adult borer are small brownish beetles about 2.5 to 5mm long, can be easily recognised by their hooded head are on the wing from September to April. The larvae do the damage and bore small round holes about 1mm in diameter. The first noticeable signs of infestations are the flight holes or small piles of dust. They can be controlled by insecticides or fumigation. Cockroaches Cockroaches can be controlled using insecticide sprays which rely on contact, baits which kill by consumption and glue traps which stick them to a surface. Cockroaches tend to be found where water, food and harbourage are most accessible. They are crack and crevice dwellers, therefore insecticides and baits need to be placed as near as possible to those areas where they are living. Baits are extremely effective as cockroaches eat each others faeces and are cannibalistic. One cockroach that has eaten cockroach gel bait can in effect cause 44 other cockroaches to die: a domino effect is created resultant from the consumption of faeces and bodies. When controlling cockroaches, remember they tend to concentrate in those areas where they can access food, water and harbourage. In residential structures, kitchens and bathrooms generally develop the highest infestations. Moisture is essential for cockroach survival and is sought more frequently than food. Fleas There are thousands of species of fleas. Fleas have one of the most repulsive reputations as they are parasitic to us (humans). There are four stages to a fleas life: egg, larvae, pupae and adult flea. Eggs often fall off the host into the host nest (pets bedding, human bedding). The larvae then feed on dead organic matter - dead skin, flakes of food scraps etc. Once the larvae have grown, they form pupae before becoming an adult. The adult pupae may stay dormant for up to a year. Vibrations from a passing host can trigger the dormant fleas to hatch out - this is why some people can report suddenly being attacked/bitten by an infestation of fleas. Adult fleas can go for as long as four months waiting for a feed. Effective flea control requires thorough sanitation, flea control on pets and proper use of insecticides. The home should be thoroughly vacuumed to remove larvae, pupae and food materials and the vacuum bag contents removed to the rubbish. Pet bedding should be washed in hot soapy water and aired regularly. Residual insecticides should be applied as a general spray on floors, rugs, furniture and all areas that pets frequent. Ideally an insect growth regulator mixed with an insecticide will provide the most optimum results. Insecticides alone will only kill the adult flea whereas an insecticide and growth regulator will kill the adults and larvae. Adult fleas on cats will often stay dormant until vibrations stimulate them to emerge. Flies Most flies are diurnal in nature which means they are active during the daytime. House flies, blow flies and other structure infesting flies respond well to wave lengths of light once inside a building and therefore are attracted to light or fly to windows. Insect light traps are very effective in attracting and capturing flies and other flying insects by drawing them to UV light. The main control options are the use of insecticide sprays applied to ceilings, window and door frames, electronic light attractant fly traps and various types of outdoor fly traps that when operating effectively will cut down the numbers of flies entering indoors. Mosquitoes Mosquito is Spanish for little fly and have been around for over 30 million years. They have acute hunting skills so are experts at finding people to bite via chemical, visual and heat sensors - they are attracted to heat, light, perspiration, body odour, lactic acid and carbon dioxide. Mosquitoes are responsible for more human deaths than any other living creature. Only the female mosquito bite and she requires a blood meal to breed. Eggs are usually laid on the surface of stagnant water and can even be found in water that has accumulated in crevices of trees. Likely breeding sites around the home include any water retaining receptacles. Pest Management Services Limited Insect Fact Pack

5 Control of mosquitoes can include elimination of breeding sites, electronic UV light attractant machines that break their lifecycle, non-toxic repellent sprays and insecticides. Silverfish They are agile, fast-running, nocturnal insects that generally shun the light and are found in dark, damp, undisturbed places. They can range fairly widely throughout a dwelling. A severe infestation indicates that the population has been resident for a long period of time as they take some time to build up their numbers. While frequently found in roof cavities, they may also occur in wall voids and sub floor areas. They feed on most types of human food but prefer starchy materials. They will feed on photographs, paper, wallpaper, book bindings, cotton and bed linens. Any sources of glue, starch or sizing are likely to be attractive. Control of silverfish can be by chemical and non-chemical control, including the use of insecticide sprays, dusts and glue traps and maintaining good house keeping practices (ensuring to keep your property and house clean and dry and being careful not to accumulate piles of papers). Spiders In New Zealand we have very few venomous spiders. The Katipo spider which is venomous is generally only found near the coast, often in tussocky areas. All spiders are predators; they prey on insects and sometimes on each other. They do not intentionally set out to bite people and are beneficial creatures as they are responsible for keeping many insects under control. Except for the Katipo, the Australian Red back spider and the Australian White Tail spider, most species are relatively harmless. If there is a high population of spiders in and around a building you will find that they have a good food supply. Eliminate their food source and the spider population will drop. Control of spiders can include maintaining good sanitation practices (regular vacuuming) and the use of dusts and insecticides. When applying insecticides, do not remove spider webs prior to treatment as sprayed webs will kill off those spiders going back to the webs. Wasps An extremely painful pest as unlike Bees, Wasps can sting repeatedly without dying. In some areas nests die off or go dormant over the cooler months, although larger nests can remain active all year round. The queen will create a new nest as the season warms up: the first batch of workers she raises take over the duties of the nest, with the nest going from one to 10,000 wasps in a single summer. Wasps can be controlled by location of the nest and treatment with a suitable product. Most wasps normally forage within about 200 metres of their nest. To find a nest site, observe the flight paths of wasps at dawn and dusk. Once you find a nest, locate all entrances, taking care not to disturb the wasps. Return at night (when wasps are dormant) and apply a wasp control dust into each entrance. Alternately, don a complete wasp suit and treat during daylight hours. When the wasps become active during the day, they will carry the poison into the nest on their bodies, killing all inhabitants of the nest within a few days. Several other types of control include outdoor flying insect drown traps, baits - which are ideal when the nest cannot be located and for indoors - use UV light attractant traps. 2. APPROVED HANDLER CERTIFICATION Under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act which relates to the use of pesticides - all persons using most pesticides need to hold a full Approved Handlers Certificate. They are responsible for ensuring that the pesticides/insecticides are handled safely and that they do not cause harm to people or the environment. The most hazardous pesticides are tracked, which means they are subject to more rigorous control. *The ERMA New Zealand website has a list of pesticides requiring Approved Handler and Tracking controls: and a list of non-tracked pesticides requiring Approved Handler control: *If you want any further details relating to approved handler for the chemical you use or you do not have the required experience we suggest that you check out the ERMA website: and contact a test certifier.
