1 Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions Nursing Newsletter I n d i a n a U n i v e r s i t y o f P e n n s yl v a n i a Student Advisory Board (SAB) The Student Advisory Board (SAB) will be holding their first meeting on Monday, November 2 at 430 pm. The main purpose of the SAB is to enhance communication between the nursing students and faculty. It consists of a minimum of two voting representatives from each nursing class and the faculty advisors. All nursing students are welcome to attend the SAB meetings. The board will meet a minimum of one time per semester, and additional meetings will be scheduled as believed necessary by the board. The faculty advisor will bring agenda items from the faculty group to the student advisory board as well as take student feedback and concerns to faculty. Please contact your class representatives for any concerns that you would like brought to the Faculty s attention. Once students are placed and overrides for those course are completed, students will be able to view their overrides and register for those courses they have been assigned. If students are able to find another student to switch courses with them, students will need to complete the required form with both students signatures. We will also place the boards for the junior and senior level courses outside of Dr. Hoffman s office for those students looking to switch courses. We will follow the same process followed in the Fall. Also as a reminder please make sure if you plan to take coursework at another college, please make sure you fill out a preapproval form and submit to the transfer as soon as possible. 3 Page 3 Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions Senior Nursing Students Host Health Fair Senior level Public/Community Health Nursing Students hosted a Health Fair on campus throughout the day on Tuesday, September 29th. The students had tables in the Library, Oak Grove and Delaware Room of the HUB where information was provided to interested students/faculty and staff on the following topics: Meningitis Awareness/Prevention, Sleep Disruption/Stress Effects/ Management, Alcohol Awareness/Prevention, Melanoma Awareness, Treatments and Prevention, Healthy Habits and Suicide Awareness/Prevention. Interested parties received free screenings, picked-up some information or asked questions about these important health issues commonly found on college campuses.
4 Page 4 SEEKING STUDENTS Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions to participate in a study that may change how CPR is taught The IUP nursing program, along with the 711 th Human Performance Wing and Duke University School of Nursing is seeking 200 study participants to shift the one-size-fits-all approach to CPR training to a competency-based, individualized training and practice. We are seeking IUP freshman and sophomore nursing students willing to participate. You must be CPR qualified. If you are not yet CPR qualified see Ms. Deb Armstrong at the Health and Wellness center to schedule a class on CPR certification ( ). [She is expecting you!]-once you have completed CPR please contact the site coordinator Dr. Julia A. Greenawalt, office-222 Sally Johnson Hall or via at jgreen@iup.edu. She is taking interested participants Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in room 267 in Sally Johnson. Other times may be accommodated by appointment. ENROLLMENT GOAL 200 Students! October 2015

The presentation involved strategies for promoting effective digital learning communities. Publication Dr. Edith West s work, Constructivist Theory and Concept Based Learning in Professional Nursing Ethics: Implications for Nurse Educators, is accepted for publication for Spring It was accepted by Teaching Ethics, Society of Ethics Across the Curriculum, and Center for the Society of Ethics at Utah University. Appointment with NLN CNEA Evaluation Committee Dr. Diana Rupert received an appointment to he NLN CNEA Evaluation Committee, for a two-year term, beginning September 2015-September Presentation in England Dr. Susan Poorman presented at the Nursing Educational Times International healthcare conference at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom from September 8-10, News From the PhD Program Donna McDermott defended her dissertation, Seeking Consensus on Prebriefing: Preparing Students for Simulation-Based Learning on October 8, Congratulations! Susan Hellier defended her dissertation Factors Affecting Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice among Nurse Practitioners on October 12, Congratulations! News From the Masters Program The Masters Program is pleased to offer undergraduate students a chance to take graduate level courses. If an undergraduate student has more than 90 credits and QPA above 3.0, they are eligible to enroll in the fast track graduate program and take up to 15 credits. Undergraduate students can also enroll in the Non Fsst Track option and take up to 6 credits of graduate level coursework if you have a QPA of 2.6 or above. *Please note that you cannot use these courses towards both graduate and undergraduate coursework, you may choose one or the other. Graduate courses to consider: NURS 614-Health Policy and Advocacy (online), NURS 619- Leadership Strategies in Health Care (face to face), NURS 555 Health Care Informatics (face to face), and NURS 610-Health Promotion and Social Issues (online).
