Florida Workers Compensation Institute Provides Scholarships he Million Dollar Advocates Forum recently gained two new members Gerry Rosenthal and Jonathan Levy. Both Gerry and Jon were certified as members of the most prestigious group of trial lawyers in the United States. Membership is limited to attorneys who have won million and multi-million dollar verdicts, awards and settlements. The organization was founded in 1993 and there are only about 3000 members located across the country. T his year, three more children of injured workers received $2,000 each in scholarships. This year s winners are Nicole Perez (Florida State University), Sabrina Ho war d (The Pictured are Brian Coleman, Mark Golden and Brian s father Heritage Institute) and Brian Coleman (Palm Beach Community College). The scholarships are made possible through the efforts of The Florida Workers Compensation Institute ( FWCI ), a non-profit organization that was formed to promote educational goals. Gerry Rosenthal, a director of the FWCI, explains that the group hosts seminars throughout the year and donates a portion of the profits to scholarships for children of injured workers. 3 Gerry Rosenthal Elected Chair WORKERS COMPENSATION SECTION, ACADEMY OF FLORIDA TRIAL LAWYERS S enior Partner Gerry Rosenthal was named Chair of the Workers Compensation Section of the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers ( AFTL ). The Workers Compensation Section of the AFTL works to protect the interests of injured workers and their dependents. One important aspect of their efforts is attempting to impact proposed legislation that could negatively impact injured workers and their families. WE RE MOVING! Port St. Lucie Relocates Office to New Building A fter nearly three years at the U.S. Highway One location, Rosenthal and Levy is moving its Port St. Lucie office to a brand new office building. The new office will be located in the Riverside Bank Building at 1660 Northwest Saint Lucie West Boulevard. Occupying the third floor, the office will be centrally located to the Turnpike, U.S. Highway One and I-95. The move is slated for August You will be notified of the exact move in date and provided detailed directions. For more than 30 years, says Rosenthal, I ve fought for injured workers in Florida. Law Firm Donates $5,000 to Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition Buys Playground Equipment at Glades Tri-City Family Education Program L earning should be fun. With a $5,000 donation from Rosenthal & Levy, fun is just outside the door at the Glades Tri-City Family Education Program. The donation enabled the purchase of playground equipment for the program s new building. The 4,000 square foot facility is located at 981 Southeast 1st Street in Belle Glade. Rosenthal & Levy Senior Administrator Ingrid M. Rosenthal was moved to make the contribution after a call for donations from the Literacy Coalition. Our law firm serves a great many migrant families. I know how much learning to read and write English changes the lives of these people. Since 1993, coordinated by the Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition, the Glades Tri-County Family Education Program has hosted predominantly Haitian and Mexican migrant students and their children as they learn to speak, read and write English. Approximately 40 families a year are served in the areas of adult education, parenting education, children s education and parent and child (PACT) time. 4 Paralegal Kris Parker Participates in National Multiple Sclerosis Walk K ris Parker, a paralegal in the firm s Port St. Lucie office, was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in one person cannot be predicted. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving hope to people affected by the disease. When Kris was diagnosed with MS, she handled the disease in a way that defines her work ethic she went into action. Rather than sitting back, she decided to do something. In September Kris participated in the MS Challenge Walk. Hosting participants from across the country, the walk covered 50 miles in three days and raised funds to move closer to a cure. Always in the lead, Kris Parker was chosen to represent Florida and had the honor of carrying the State flag. The walk raised over $1,000,000. Kris stated, I would not trade this experience for the world. I WOULD NOT TRADE THIS EXPERIENCE FOR THE WORLD. Rosenthal & Levy Partners with Habitat for Humanity on Two Houses D on t think your legal team can handle a paintbrush, hammer and a pickax? Think again! Members of the firm recently participated in two Saturday builds for Habitat for Humanity of Martin County. Volunteers painted the exterior of a Habitat home located on Clayton Street in Stuart, Florida. The firm also partnered with Habitat on a project in the Booker Park section of Indiantown. The team performed various jobs, including installation of tile and vertical blinds, painting interior spaces and digging fence posts at the house. In addition, several members of Rosenthal & Levy s project team used pickaxes and shovels to level the backyard in preparation for sod. Firm Administrator Lori DeMayo stated, A deserving family is getting affordable, quality housing, and we get to leave after a long morning of hard work knowing that we ve made someone s life a whole lot better. The mission of Habitat is the elimination of poverty by helping disadvantaged people improve their living conditions. The criteria for family selection is need, willingness to complete 500 hours of sweat-equity with Habitat, and the ability to make monthly mortgage payments. After completion of the sweat-equity requirement and construction of their home, the family receives a twenty five year, no interest, and no profit loan payable to Habitat. 5 T he festivities at the 3rd Annual San Juan Festival were bright, loud and according to visitors as fun as it gets. A celebration of Hispanic culture, the event again took place at the South County Regional Sports Stadium in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Rosenthal & Levy Hosts Mustard Seed Ministries Day I t was a strange sight indeed, a law library filled to the rafters with televisions, furniture, games, clothes, shoes, bicycles, and other items. The idea behind the stockpile is all about people helping people. Rosenthal & Levy s Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach offices joined forces to collect assorted merchandise for the Mustard Seed Ministries of Ft. Pierce. Staff donated items that will either be used in the agency s thrift store or given for free to in-need families on the Treasure Coast. Recently, Monica Cruz of the Port St. Lucie office was elected to the Board of Mustard Seed Ministries. During my first meeting I learned that the organization was still helping people displaced by hurricanes. My first reaction was shock. My next thought was what can I do? After speaking with my co-workers it was clear that everyone had something of value they could donate. When I started this I had no idea so many people would get behind it, stated Cruz. Mustard Seed Administrator Sharon Britcher stated, What Rosenthal & Levy is doing is just great. We could not be happier that they thought of us. Mustard Seed Ministries is a private, non-profit, faith-based social service agency. The ministry provides educational, social, vocational and residential programs in St. Lucie County. 6 T he Board of Councilors was established 19 years ago and is a leadership advisory group that serves to promote better understanding of and support for The Carter Center and its activities among private sector opinion leaders. The Board of Councilors was founded in 1987 at the initiative of President Carter and Ivan Allen III. Gerry and Ingrid have been active with the Carter Center for nearly a decade, supporting various programs and activities. 8 Rosenthal & Levy Kicks Off NBC-NewsChannel 5 Telethon I n the wake of the nation s most devastating natural disaster, Rosenthal & Levy extends a collective and heartfelt prayer on behalf of the Gulf Coast residents. Like so many businesses across the nation, Rosenthal & Levy is involved with various efforts to support recovery and rebuilding efforts. The firm donated $2500 to the American Red Cross through a storm relief telethon hosted by NBC Affiliate WPTV NewsChannel 5 and the Red Cross. The four hour telethon raised $502,000 to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. Partner Jonathan Levy presented a check to co-hosts Jim Sackett and Laurel Sauer during the first five minutes of the fundraiser held at WPTV s NewsChannel 5 studios. During the live broadcast he asked viewers to heed the call for donations. He stated, This is not a Gulf Coast tragedy, it is an American tragedy. I m asking the private sector to give generously.
