3 School Choice Placement Center Contact No: Central is the Community School for Area F1 Central is the District wide magnet for the French Immersion program (Areas A-F). Central is the Regional IB magnet for Area C (West of 35E) & Area E Busing will be provided to schools within the student s Attendance Area as well as to Regional and District Magnets. Any student who lives outside the attendance areas may apply to Central. Admitted students will be expected to provide their own means of transportation.

4 Students who must submit an application to attend Central High and receive transportation from the district Placement Center Application Deadline: February 16, 2016 Students attending Capitol Hill Middle School who reside within Area F1- Please submit an on time application by February 16th Students who live in Area E and Area C (West of 35E) who want to attend Central for the IB Program - Please submit an on time application by February 16th

5 Advanced Study Options IB DP: International Baccalaureate Diploma program (External Exams) IB MYP: International Baccalaureate Middle Years program AP: Advanced Placement Courses (External Exams) Q: Quest Courses ( no external exams) FIC: French Immersion Certificate CIS: College in the schools (U of M credit, no external exams, classes held at Central) PSEO: Post Secondary Educational Opportunities : Classes taken at a post secondary institution worthy of school and college credit)

6 Grading System and High Honors Designation All Accelerated, Quest, IB, AP, Honors, CIS and PSEO courses are weighted for GPA (Grade Point Average) calculations. The formula for these courses will be figured for GPA calculations via a 1.25 multiplier effect For example: An A (GPA=4.0) grade in such a course will yield a GPA of 5.0 (4.0x1.25= 5.0) Class ranks are calculated based on GPA

7 Open Access There is no screening process for participation in IB/AP & Quest classes/programs- students self select Some eligibility requirements apply for participation in CIS and PSEO Some course recommendations may be suggested based on a student s previous course of study.

8 IB DP (Grades 11-12) The Full IB Diploma Program (option 1) The IB Course Results (option 2): Take IB courses ( at Standard and Higher levels) and exams in individual subjects IB Exam scores are considered for College credit/advanced standing in college/university All IB DP courses follow a standardized International curriculum Central Students have IB Testing options in several subjects

9 The Full IB Diploma Program (Participation begins in Grade 11) Exam Requirements 6 IB exams at standard (SL) and Higher levels (HL) from different subject groups 4HL+ 2 SL OR 3HL+3 SL Additional requirements Take the Theory of Knowledge class (TOK) Complete a research paper with advising support Fulfill Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) hours Please Note: Participation in the IB MYP is not a prerequisite for the IB DP, but is strongly encouraged

10 IB MYP: (Grades 9-10) Grade 9 and 10: Year long study Schedule of an MYP student: 7 period day Accelerated/Quest courses in core subjects (4 periods) French, Spanish or Chinese (1 period) Art (1 period) Grade 10, additional Requirement: Take the personal project class (2 quarters, Tech/elective credit) *Please see handout enclosed in folder for details

11 Advanced Placement (AP) Offered by The College Board Courses follow a standardized national curriculum AP external exam scores are considered for college credits/ advanced standing in College/University Central Students have AP Testing options in several subjects

12 Quest Courses Humanities focus, rigorous, discussionbased Offered in grades 9-12 Weighted/Honor points Quest courses in grades 9 and 10 are also MYP courses Quest courses do not have an external exam in place, at the end of the course
