1 Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Informational Meeting February 12, 2014

2 Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) allows Ohio high school students to earn college credit and/or high school credit through the successful completion of college courses. The program promotes rigorous academic pursuits and exposes students to options beyond the high school classroom. Open to all students grades /12/2014 2

3 Option A: Enrollment in college for college credit ONLY or for high school AND college credit. Cost rests with the student and parent. Option B: Enrollment in college courses for a combination of high school AND college credit. Cost rests with the Ohio Department of Education.

4 Sinclair Community College- Dayton or Mason Miami University- Middletown Wright State University University of Dayton

5 If the student fails a class, the financial obligation shall default to the student/parent. If the student drops a course AFTER the established drop deadline, the financial obligation defaults to the student/parent. This obligation must be taken care of before the student will be cleared to graduate and/or participate in the commencement ceremony.

6 Transportation is the responsibility of the student/parent. Attendance is the responsibility of the student/parent. All textbooks and equipment provided to a student belong to the COLLEGE. Students may be expected to return these items at the end of each academic term. No funds are available for room and board.

7 According to the Ohio Department of Education, participation in PSEO is based on the participating college s placement standards for credit-bearing, college-level courses. If a student fails to complete a course, either through a formal class drop process or non-attendance, no credit will be given by the high school for the course. If a student receives a failing grade, the grade WILL average into their GPA and remain on the high school transcript. No credit will be received.

8 Students must report to their high school courses on time. They will NOT be permitted to miss scheduled high school classes in order to participate in campus activities. Additional requirements for college coursework are not the responsibility of the Springboro School District. SHS will not bend rules in order to help the student fulfill college course requirements. College course schedule may interfere with student participation in high school activities.

9 College courses will be taught at an accelerated pace. Students will NOT have teachers, counselors and attendance personnel at the high school overseeing their progress. Students/parents need to be aware of the maturity and social differences that are present between college and high school campuses. Students/parents need to be aware there will be an increased responsibility for learning on the college campuses.

10 No high school graduation requirement will be waived for any student participating in PSEO. Students need to meet the required credits to graduate. Class of 2015 & credits Class of 2017 & beyond- 22 credits No high school diploma will be issued until college coursework (taken to fulfill a graduation requirement) is completed and the grade report is received from the college.

11 Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 5 classes at all times. If a letter grade of Pass (P) or Fail (F) is obtained, it will NOT be computed in the student s high school GPA and class rank.

12 All letter grades earned for completion of college courses will be assigned the following numerical value and will be used to determine GPA and class rank: A = 100 B = 89 C = 79 D = 69 F = 59 It is the responsibility of the student/parent to understand the grading policy of the college. SHS does NOT adopt their grading policy.

13 All Ohio colleges and universities operate under a semester hour system. 1 Semester Hour =.2 High School Credit 2 =.4 3 =.6 4 =.8 5 Semester Hours = 1.0 High School Credit

14 To determine the maximum number of college credit hours for which a student is eligible, complete the following: Take our 7 period day and subtract the total number of credits the student is taking at SHS. Multiply that number by 5 to equal the number of credit hours for which the student is eligible. Example: 7 periods 4 credits at SHS = 3 available credits through PSEO. 5 x 3 = 15 semester hours the student can take for the year.

15 Students interested in participating in PSEO should have entered a complete list of high school course requests. (If not, please contact your guidance counselor.) Plan as if the student will be attending SHS full-time next year. Once student is accepted into the PSEO program and has scheduled college classes, he/she will work with high school guidance counselor to arrange high school class schedule accordingly. 2/12/

16 The universities are the gatekeepers of this program. Admission requirements are specific to each university. Refer to handout

17 Students have the opportunity to take courses that may not be offered by the high school. Students have a chance to experience college-level work and college life prior to making a final decision about postsecondary education. Students can take classes that are academically challenging and that meet their specific interests. Students can take college courses and receive both secondary and post-secondary credits. Students can earn college credit at no personal expense (Option B). 2/12/

18 Students will have increased responsibility for learning. Students may have reduced opportunities or time for participating in high school activities. Grades in college courses will affect the high school GPA and class rank. Students need to plan for increased time to travel to and from the post-secondary institutions and increased time for study. Scope or content of the college course may differ from high school courses as well as the content of the Ohio Graduation Test. There is no guarantee that students will get the courses desired. Students may experience some social discomfort with older students. If the student fails a course under Option B, the financial responsibility of the course rests with the student/parent. 2/12/

19 Be sure to sign the attendance log tonight (parent AND student). SHS students planning to participate in PSEO for next year need to complete the Information and Counseling Form and return it to the guidance office no later than March 30, Once this form is submitted, the counselor will initiate a meeting with the student to discuss specific PSEO college applications, course scheduling, etc. This meeting will take place AFTER the March 30 th deadline.

20 March 30- Deadline to declare intent to participate in PSEO by submitting the Information and Counseling Form to the guidance office. March 31-April 4- Counselors will meet with students to provide them with appropriate PSEO applications/discuss course planning. Students must submit PSEO applications to the guidance office by appropriate deadlines. Students will wait for an admission decision that will be sent to the student from the college (May/June). Students will attend college orientation/register for college classes (June/July). Student will college class schedule to high school counselor (August). Counselor will adjust student s high school schedule accordingly (August). 2/12/

21 Guidance counselors will meet with students to provide them with specific college PSEO applications once they become available. This is will be an individual meeting that is initiated by the guidance counselor. Students are responsible for meeting college application deadlines (April 15 for Sinclair/May 1 for MUM, UD, and WSU) and for following through with orientation requirements, campus scheduling, etc. It is also common for the student to meet with the PSEO admission counselor on the college campus once accepted to the university.
