1 Fall 2012 BACJ/MCJ Electives Bachelor of Criminal Justice Electives CRJU 4121: Ethics in Criminal Justice Online Ethical dilemmas confronting criminal justice professionals are far reaching and prevalent in today s criminal justice system. Inherent within the criminal justice system is the power to make discretionary decisions that impacts the offenders, victims, and society. This course exposes students to ethical issues associated with the police, prosecution, courts, and correctional systems. Thus, this course is designed to begin preparing students in identifying and critically examining ethical issues in the criminal justice system by applying ethical decision models. This course also provides students with the unique opportunity to analyze how they would resolve these issues according to their own values and beliefs while staying within the boundaries of the law and professional codes of ethics.

2 Instructor: Lanette Boughey is originally from Billings, Montana and received a B.S. in Sociology (with a concentration in Social Justice) at Montana State University. After graduation she was offered a juvenile probation officer position with juvenile court in Salt Lake City, Utah. Five years later she obtained a M.S.W. from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri that provided her with the clinical skills necessary to assess and treat juvenile delinquents. Dr. Boughey then became a licensed clinical social worker and was a child and family therapist at a community mental health center in Montana. She specialized in treating sexually and physically abused children and adults. After conducting a couple of family therapy workshops she decided she wanted to teach on a college level and was accepted into the Ph.D. Criminology Program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. During her doctorate education she became very interested in female offenders and their children and focused her dissertation examining Montana s imprisoned women and their children. Dr. Boughey has taught criminal justice for the past 15 years at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Minot State University, and University of Mary. Included in her teaching experience is also teaching social work for three years at University of Mary. Her most recent publications include works with Dr. Rosemary Gido that focus on mentally ill female offenders. CRJU 4520: Gangs and Criminal Organizations Online This course traces the origins and historical development of the activities known as "organized crime." These crimes are some of the most dangerous to American society and range from the commonly known offenses of gambling and narcotics to the more subtle and sophisticated, less understood but equally serious, crimes of extortion, commercial bribery and political corruption. Instructor: Marcy Becker CRJU : Environmental Crime Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:00 pm 3:15 pm Instructor: Paul Stretesky received his PhD from Florida State University and has studied environmental justice and crime for the past 15 years. He is currently the co-editor (with M.J. Lynch) of the Ashgate book series entitled Green Criminology and helps coordinate the International Green Criminology, Environmental Crime, and Ecological Justice Working Group that consists of nearly 70 scholars located in more than a dozen countries. Dr. Stretesky has published three books, including Environmental Law, Crime and Justice in 2009 (co-authors R. Burns and M.J. Lynch). His work demonstrates why criminologists should be concerned with environmental harm and inequality and how they can better contribute to the emerging area of green criminology. Dr. Stretesky's current research is focused on the distribution and potential impact of non-profit organizations that engage in environmental policing.

3 Master of Criminal Justice Electives CRJU 5260: Crime and Literature Intensive Friday/Saturday format Fri. 8:00AM - 5:00PM 09/14, 09/28 Sat. 8:00AM - 5:00PM 09/15, 09/29, 10/13 This seminar focuses on non-fiction literature as it relates to criminality and the Criminal Justice System. A substantial number of people in the United States form impressions and evaluate the effectiveness of the Criminal Justice System based on accounts presented within various types of nonfiction literature, either as social commentary or in biographical/autobiographical form. This course explores samples of these types of commentary, in order to more fully understand and appreciate their impact on shaping public opinion of the Criminal Justice System. Instructor: Mary Dodge is SPA s Director of Criminal Justice Programs and Associate Professor. Prof. Dodge earned her Ph.D. in 1997 in criminology, law and society from the School of Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine. She received her B.A. and M.A. in psychology from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Her research and writing interests include women in the criminal justice system, white-collar crime, policing, prostitution, and courts. She teaches a variety of courses; including, Juvenile Justice Administration, Nature and Causes of Crime, Judicial Administration, White-Collar Crime, Research Methods, and Women and Crime. Her articles have appeared in Courts and Justice, Contemporary Issues in Criminology, International Journal of the Sociology of Law, The Prison Journal, Police Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice, and the Encyclopedia of White-Collar and Corporate Crime. She and Gilbert Geis co-edited the book Lessons of Criminology and share authorship on the book Stealing Dreams: A Fertility Clinic Scandal.
