It provides financial aid, educational, and career counseling services to adults and youth in the Louisville area and in southern Indiana. KCAC is a division of KentuckianaWorks Foundation. The Foundation is administered by KentuckianaWorks, a business-led workforce investment board that oversees workforce development initiatives in the Greater Louisville region. 2 N E W S L E T T E R plan for college T YPES OF POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTIONS Postsecondary education beyond a high school diploma or a GED is available through training programs, vocational/technical training schools, community colleges, four year colleges, universities, and proprietary schools. Two-year Colleges/Community Colleges: Public, Not for Profit, institutions that lead to an associate s degree, diplomas, or certificates. Most also have programs designed to transfer to a four-year college or university. In Kentucky, the Community and Technical Colleges are part of one system called KCTCS (Kentucky Community and Technical College System). Technical Colleges: Public or Private, Not for Profit or For Profit institutions that lead to certificates, diplomas or sometimes an associate s degree. 7 pay for college FEDERAL & STATE FINANCIAL AID OPPORTUNITIES Financial Aid refers to money used to cover the cost of attendance at a postsecondary institution. It consists of grants, scholarships, work-study and student loans. Financial aid is awarded based on need, merit, or credit. u Need-based aid is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. The Pell grant is an example. N E W S L E T T E R u Merit-based aid is awarded to students who demonstrate academic achievement, special talent, or having met criteria provided by a postsecondary institution, a private organization, a community foundation, or an association. u Credit-based aid consists of student loans that must be repaid. Federal Pell Grant is awarded to students who have not earned their first bachelor s degree. It is based on financial need. Federal Supplemental al Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is awarded to undergraduate students who have the lowest income, at the discretion of the school. Federal Work-Study provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students who are eligible for a Pell Grant. Kentucky Tuition Grant (KTG) is awarded to full-time students who have financial need and are Kentucky residents attending a private postsecondary institution. The filing priority date is ASAP after Jan. 1. Kentucky al Excellence Scholarship (KEES) is earned during high school. The amount of scholarship award is determined by grade point average and ACT scores. GED recipients use ACT scores for eligibility. Federal Perkins Loans are low-interest loans for undergraduate and graduate students with low incomes, at the discretion of the school. Stafford or Direct Federal Loans provide student loans to cover the cost of attendance at a postsecondary institution. Vocational Rehabilitation al Assistance is available for individuals with qualifying disabilities. The filing priority date is March 1, with the processing deadline being March 10, annually. Indiana Freedom of Choice Grant is available to students attending eligible independent postsecondary institutions. Indiana Twenty-first Century Scholars Program awards low-income students in Indiana who start participating in the 8th grade. The filing priority date is March 1, with the processing deadline being March 10, annually. Veterans Benefits are for students with records of military service. Dependents of veterans who have died or were permanently disabled also may be eligible. 7

8 N E W S L E T T E R pay for college (Free) KCAC FINANCIAL AID SERVICES Electronic Filing of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) KCAC will assist individuals with filing the FAFSA electronically with the U.S. Department of. By transmitting financial aid data electronically (versus completing and mailing a paper copy of the FAFSA to the U.S. Department of ), u errors are reduced, u data will register with the U.S. Department of in 3-7 days, not weeks as with paper forms, and u Student Aid Reports (SARs) are generated for individuals within days. Remember to bring the following documents to your appointment: u completed 1040 federal tax return and W2 forms if you are required to file taxes u documentation of other income, such as a Social Security Income (SSI) statement, KTAP, child support, and Food Stamp Award Letter. u Until the age of 24, students also need their parents completed 1040 federal tax form, parents W2s and parents birth dates in order to complete the FAFSA. u Your PIN (Personal Identification Number) is important! Your PIN will allow you access to your personal information in various U.S. Department of systems. You will keep the same PIN the entire time you are in postsecondary education, so keep it in a safe place and bring it with you each time you come to KCAC. DEFAULTED STUDENT LOAN REHABILITATION COUNSELING The U.S. Department of provides a number of ways to re-qualify for financial aid. Rehabilitation of a student loan in default involves setting up a reasonable payment schedule with the current holder of the loan.
