CHBA BC s Canadian Home Builders Institute Certification Program Update October 2011

Canadian Home Builder s Institute CHBA BC houses its continuing education certification programs (all of which meet the National Education Benchmark) within the Canadian Home Builders Institute (CHBI). Our Learning Management System (LMS) is a fully automated online registration system which allows students to register and pay for the course online, orders for workbooks are sent directly from the printer, provides them access to their online modules 24/7 to complete their courses and tracks their progress. Our online Learning Management System (LMS) is easily adaptable and expandable to facilitate expansion across Canada to interested HBAs. **In a recent study conducted of builders in BC, it was discovered the online format is the preferred method of delivery, as opposed to completing the entire program in a classroom setting.

Benefits of Certification Certification demonstrates to clients, competitors, suppliers, staff and investors that industry respected best practices are used Continues to raise the level of professionalism and set a high standard for entry and success in this important economic sector Provides builders and renovators with something tangible they can use to promote their business and keep a competitive edge in today s economy Several municipalities in British Columbia fast track building permits for Registered Housing Professionals (RHP) and Registered Renovation Professionals (RRP) Provides the basis for learning modules that are easily transferable as learned skills into apprenticeship programs Provides the association with a vehicle for disciplining unethical or incompetent builders and renovators as the certification can be stripped should there be sufficient evidence of a wrongdoing.

Certification for Builders = = An INDIVIDUAL must: Have 5 years experience (including 3 years practical hands on) Be employed by a CHBA member Completion of the following 6 courses: Marketing & Project Sales Project Management & Site Supervision Construction Law Financial Management BC Building Code Building Science for New Homes(Built Green Builder Training) A BUSINESS must: Employ an RHP in a position of responsibility Be a member of CHBA (for at least 2 years, in good standing) Be a member in good standing with a warranty provider Be registered with the Homeowner Protection Office (Licensed)

Certification for Renovators = = An INDIVIDUAL must: Have 5 years experience (including 3 years practical hands on) Be employed by a CHBA member Completion of the following 6 courses: Marketing & Project Sales for Renovators Project Management & Site Supervision Construction Law Financial Management BC Building Code A BUSINESS must: Employ an RRP in a position of responsibility Provide proof the owner has 5 years experience in renovations Be a member of CHBA (for at least 2 years, in good standing) Provide proof of $2 million liability coverage Provide a 1 year warranty on all projects

Certifications COMING SOON In addition to requirements for RHP, individuals must complete the additional courses: Business Planning and Management Human Resources Planning and Management Service and Warranty Safe Work Practices* Communication and Negotiation* *courses under development

Benefits of E Learning Course materials are self paced and accessible 24/7 from any location with internet, allowing students to speed up or slow down as necessary in a timeline that suits their schedule Remote access via USB when no internet available Less time spent away from the job No boundaries Province wide delivery Courses can be updated easily and quickly, as information and needs in industry change (eg. Building Code) Consistent delivery of course material Delivery costs are greatly reduced Higher retention of course material
