PROFESSIONALIZATION OF THE RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY a. Does your organization offer education and training opportunities for new home builders and renovators? If so, are new home builders and renovators able to acquire specific designations? Yes. George Brown offers a variety of professional development workshops, programs and continuing education courses, both in-class and distance learning, that provide flexible options for new home builders and renovators to undertake continuous professional development. A number of our courses/programs are accredited by industry and professional associations including: Canadian Construction Association s (CCA) Gold Seal Certification (GSC) Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) Construction Estimator Certified (CEC)and Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB) American Institute of Constructors (AIC) Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (AScT), (CET), and affiliate (OAAAS) Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) Gas Technician (TSSA) Association of Architectural Technologists (MAATO) The Construction Institute of Canada (TCIC) Ontario Certificate of Apprenticeship and Certificate of Qualification (Red Seal) Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (Registered Home Inspector) b. If yes, please attach the report(s) or provide an online link. Yes - through the Office of Research and Innovation at George Brown College d. Will your organization be undertaking any research and/or produce reports in 2011 related to the professionalization of the residential construction industry? Yes Argyle Project - Green Technologies for existing Residential Properties Green Building: The Industry Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies (ICREST) 3. COURSE DELIVERY AND DEVELOPMENT a. What steps are you taking to address the specific skill needs of the residential construction industry? A substantial field education component (co-op and field placement) is included in all post-secondary programs. Current and emerging technologies are included in the course curriculum of all programs. The following programs are in development or are being considered: Construction Engineering Technician (2year) Diploma Program is being revised to incorporate content from our previous Residential Construction Management Program (developed with the Toronto Home Builders Association now BILD) and the CHBA National Education Benchmarks for New Home Builders and Renovators Electro-Mechanical Technician Program is being upgraded to a three year technology program in order to incorporate Building Automation and Controls Interior Design Technology is being explored for development and will include Sales and Marketing Centers, Décor and Customer Service Center design Condominium Property Management One-Year Certificate Programs for existing and proposed Construction Trades e.g. Residential Gas Fitter Techniques, Residential Carpenter, Residential Sheet Metal Courses with TARION (in collaboration with other Ontario colleges) Courses in Real Property Planning and Development 4. WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY a. Is your organization taking steps to help address workplace health and safety in relation to the residential construction industry? If so, what are they? George Brown College offers Health and Safety courses (CSAO certified) in all our construction programs and apprenticeship training.
