LPN LEADERSHIP ROLE IN LONG TERM CARE Presented by: Tony Farinella, NHA, MHSA, Executive Director
OBJECTIVES 1. Understand the definition of leadership and identify leaders in the Nursing field 2. Understand workforce statistics and labor projections 3. Explore reasons you chose the nursing profession and understanding your role 4. Understand the characteristics of leadership 5. Develop an understanding of liability 6. Understand the benefits of professional associations/memberships and networking
Some of our Country s greatest leaders have served in the military: George Washington, Revolution War Hero Dr. Mary E. Walker, surgeon during the Civil War & Medal of Honor Recipient Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War Hero Annie G. Fox, Pearl Harbor & Purple Heart Recipient 1Lt Cordelia E. Cook, Army Nurse Corps, WWII in Italy & Bronze Star Recipient The Army s definition on leadership states, leadership is the art of influencing human behavior through the ability to directly influence people and direct them toward a specific goal
Leadership is not for the meek.
At times, leadership can be a lonely place.
WORKFORCE STATISTICS Where LPN/LVN s Work U.S. Labor Bureau 2008
LABOR PROJECTIONS 21% growth for LPN between (U.S. Labor Bureau, 2010) 260,000 RN shortage by 2025 (Health Affairs, 2009) 55% of nurses surveyed reported they plan to retire between (Bernard Hodes Group, 2006) 67,253 nurses turned away from Nursing Schools due to not enough faculty, classroom space, etc. (AANC, 2010)
Why Did You Become A Nurse? Each one of you have to ask yourself this question. -Was it for some deep rooted desire to help and care for others? -Was it that you could get your license in 18 months and start earning a solid salary and benefits? -Was it a starting point in your healthcare career? -Was it for some other philosophical or personal reason? Your answer has a direct impact on your ability not only to be a good/great nurse, but your ability to become an effective leader.
Understanding Your Role The two most important people responsible for patient care: the nurse & the physician. Thus, it is important to personalize the nurse/physician relationship: -Nurses should always identify themselves prior to each physician encounter. -When you know someone personally it becomes more difficult for that person to communicate in a disruptive manner Administration must support nursing when physicians act disruptively. -Failure to do so breeds cynicism, breeds mistrust and creates an avenue for horizontal disruptions.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP Authoritarian leadership: characterized by individual control over all decisions and little input from group members. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their own ideas. Participative leadership: a style in which members of the group take a more participative role in the decision-making process. Delegative leadership: offers little or no guidance to group members and leave decision-making up to group members.
Leadership vs Management leadership is doing the right thing and management is doing things right. Managers focus on tactical activities and often times have a more directive approach. Managers are often times the previous high performers at the employee level. While a manager receives their authority based on their role, a leader's authority is innate in their approach. Good leadership skills are difficult to learn because they are far more behavioral in nature than those skills needed for management
Liability Must follow Nurse Practice Act for your specific State. Adhere to documentation standards such as: SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) ADPIE(assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) Documentation mistakes or inconsistencies are the primary tool lawyers and surveyors use against a facility to determine non-compliance of standards/regulations or policies.
The Future of Health Care Affordable Care Act Bundled Payments Re-hospitalizations Pay for Performance
Professional Memberships & Networking FLPNA (Florida Licensed Practical Nurse Association) NAPNE (National Association for Practical Nurse Education & Services) NFLPN (National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses) AAN (American Academy of Nursing) 753,000 LPN/LVN in the U.S. (U.S. Labor, 2012) The Nursing profession is potentially more influential than any other group except AARP/senior citizens.
Professional Memberships & Networking Cont d One of the most important aspects of career growth is the ability to network: -LinkedIn, face book fans of professional organizations and entities. -conferences & educational opportunities -professional associations
