Your Own Professionally Managed Portfolio Separately managed accounts (SMAs) are changing the way people invest in much the same way that mutual funds once revolutionized the world of stock and bond investing. They make available to many investors what has traditionally been available only to the wealthiest ones professionally managed, individually customized portfolios. 2
What is an SMA? A separately managed account, like a mutual fund, is an investment portfolio overseen by a professional money manager and designed to meet a specific investment objective. Unlike mutual funds, however, the security holdings in an SMA are individually owned by the investor and, to a varying degree, individually managed giving the investor, in effect, a customized portfolio. SMAs vs. Mutual Funds Similarities Professional money management Designed to meet a specific investment objective External benchmarks to evaluate performance Diversification Differences You own individual securities directly, not shares of a fund You can tailor your holdings and allocations to your own investment strategy You can monitor and assess your portfolio performance You can manage capital gains and losses for tax purposes 3
A Higher Degree of Personalization: Greater access to private money management The portfolio manager can tailor the holdings and allocations to fit your individual needs and financial objectives. Greater flexibility in the types of investments and risk exposures Allowing the SMA to work with, not against, your other investments. Greater control over cost You generally pay a fee appropriate to your asset size that includes ongoing advice from your Financial Professional, a portfolio manager s fee, trading fees, and custody services for securities held in the account. Fees vary. Greater collaboration among portfolio managers, advisors and investors You meet regularly with a team of professionals to track your progress, measure your results and ensure greater transparency over what s traded in the account and why. Greater potential tax efficiency Securities can be bought or sold, at your instruction, to harvest gains or losses, allowing you to address specific tax concerns. For example, you can match capital gains and losses, by selling select positions at a loss in order to generate tax write-offs at year end. Would You Benefit from an SMA? Do you have substantial assets to invest? If you have individual investments worth $100,000 or more, you will find greater flexibility and cost efficiency with an SMA than with mutual funds. Do you have a lump sum to invest? An SMA can ensure the orderly investment of lump sums, from retirement accounts or inheritances. You can increase exposures over a period of weeks or months to take advantage of dips, or establish a price for a particular security and not buy until the price reaches that level. Do you have a retirement plan distribution you want to roll over? Adding professional management as a resource may help increase diversification, manage tax consequences and handle liquidations. Do you have specific or complex financial needs? Investors with fiduciary duties, or who need to include or exclude certain types of investments, or who, for legal or financial reasons, need better control over the disposition of assets in a portfolio, can benefit from an SMA s unique structure. 4
An Ongoing Collaboration with Your Investment Team SMAs let you take more control over your investments by making you an equal partner with a team that includes your Financial Professional and Money Manager. The three of you interact on a regular basis, in defined roles, to ensure that your investment reality matches your investment objective. Role of Money Manager The team you select to manage your investments are experts in a specific discipline, with a fiduciary responsibility to invest with specific standards and objectives. In an SMA, they also have accountability to your specific goals and instructions. As such, they update you frequently, providing rationales for their investment decisions, quarterly details of performance and holdings and personalized analysis of your portfolio. Role of Financial Professional Your trusted Financial Professional is accountable for translating your investment goals and style into an action plan. In an SMA, your Financial Professional helps you pick a manager and evaluate your accounts on an ongoing basis. He or she can interface directly with the Manager on your behalf. Role of Investor In an SMA, you take an active role in building and monitoring your overall asset allocation, reviewing quarterly reports, meeting with your Financial Professional regularly and asking questions to ensure your portfolio is on track. 5
Three Steps to Establishing an SMA Your Financial Professional will work closely with you to set your goals, select a manager, and maintain your SMA accounts on an ongoing basis. 1 Goal setting Does an SMA align with your investment profile? Identify your long-term investment goals based on your time horizon, risk tolerance, and existing investments Write an investment policy statement that outlines your objectives, special requirements and preferences Recommend an SMA for a particular segment or segments of your portfolio 2 Selection What SMA program best fits your needs? Identify potential managers based on a due diligence examination on background, risk management and performance history Explain the rationale for recommending particular firms, portfolio managers and investment vehicles Collaborate with you on investment manager selection, as well as portfolio preferences (such as what securities to exclude) 3 Maintenance How to keep your SMA in line with your goals? Establish a personal benchmark to measure progress Develop an investment policy that determines how often to rebalance your portfolio, your buy and sell discipline, and the triggers for deciding if a change in goals, guidelines or managers is required Create a personal service record for quarterly meetings to help you stay on top of your investments in a way that you prefer 6
Choosing the Right Manager For Your Needs The personalized nature of SMAs means care should go into your selection of manager and firm. You would look for experience, credentials and fees, of course, but also availability for consultation, the frequency and clarity of reporting, and management flexibility. Investment style is also important. With enough research, you can find a manager with an investment style that matches your own. What to Look For: > Transparency Ask for a sample statement to see how detailed and understandable the reporting is, and have your investment professional explain its details. > Manager Access Ask about the frequency and quality of manager interaction; are there in-person consultations, written analysis, conference calls? > Customization Look for a manager who will automatically exclude investments you would prefer not to own. > Ongoing personal service Look for a level of service that includes ongoing communication and frequent contact from your money manager, in addition to periodic reviews. 7
Unified Managed Accounts: The Next Generation of SMAs Since an SMA is a single investment, you may need a number of individual SMAs to have a diversified portfolio. The Unified Managed Account (UMA) avoids this problem by combining a variety of asset classes into a single account. This allows your Financial Professional to coordinate your portfolio specifications across unrelated managers without multiple accounts and statements. 8
