CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION EDDA / APRIL 2011 Who Should Enroll in EDDA? There are important reasons to enroll in LSU s EDDA course. You are a dental assistant with six months of chair-side dental assisting experience and you want to learn how to perform expanded duty dental assistant functions such as polishing teeth, packing cord, or making better temporaries. You are an orthodontic or pediatric dental assistant and want to advance your career in dentistry. You are moving to Louisiana from another state and you want to be EDDA-certified. If you are new to dentistry, it s good to consider the ways you can advance your career, but you may not be ready to enroll in the EDDA course yet. This is NOT a beginner s dental assisting course. It is the next step for assistants who want to expand the number of dental functions they can legally perform. Do not consider registering for this course unless you actually have six months of chair-side dental assisting experience with a dentist. NO LATER THAN ONE WEEK PRIOR TO TAKING THE EDDA COURSE: You must provide a written confirmation from a dentist stating that you have six months of chair-side assisting experience. You must complete and return a background questionnaire. Dental assistants, office and practice managers, and dentists need to know exactly what the EDDA course is and how assistants can meet the criteria to take it. AND qualified Louisiana dentists can be reimbursed for the cost of sending assistants to the EDDA course through the Louisiana Workforce Commission s Small Business Employee Training (SBET) program. For these reasons and more, this brochure is for you whatever your interest in EDDA may be. Recommendations Not everyone who wants to enroll in the LSU Expanded Duty Dental Assistant course has met the necessary requirements. This is not a dental assistant training program; it is an expanded duty dental assistant program. A student cannot do well in this class if she/he does not have the required background and experience. In order for the student to comprehend what the instructors are trying to teach, it is recommended that a dental assistant have a minimum of six months of chair-side assistant experience prior to taking this course. 2

EDDA / APRIL 2011 CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION The LSU EDDA Course Description LSU s comprehensive EDDA course is offered to help prepare a dental assistant for certification as an expanded duty dental assistant. To this end, it is designed to provide dental assistants who have a minimum of six months of chair-side dental assisting experience with the knowledge and skills they need to perform expanded duty dental assisting functions as specified by Louisiana law. Hands-on simulation exercises will be performed in the laboratory to reinforce the didactic material presented in the lectures. Through lecture and/or hands-on laboratory and clinic exercises, at the conclusion of this course dental assistants will be trained to: 1. Remove sutures and post-extraction dressings 2. Apply cavity liners and bases (excluding capping of exposed pulpal tissue) 3. Place pit and fissure sealants, and acid etch liquids and gels 4. Place, wedge, and remove matrices for restorations by the dentist 5. Place and remove periodontal dressings, except placement of the initial dressing 6. Place and remove retraction cord 7. Perform coronal polishing procedures: prior to rubber dam placement, fluoride application, or acid etch procedures prior to or after the placement or removal of bands, crowns, and restorations after the removal of dressings and packs, excluding periodontal dressings and packs 8. Monitor administration of nitrous oxide 9. Fabricate a temporary custom crown 10. Take and record vital signs 11. Be knowledgeable in the areas of oral anatomy and tooth morphology 12. Prepare for and react appropriately to medical emergencies in the dental office The EDDA student must successfully pass the written examination and clinical evaluation to receive credit toward the requirements for Expanded Duty Dental Assistant status. Upon completion of all requirements, application must be made to the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry for actual EDDA certification. See www.lsbd.org. 3

CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION EDDA / APRIL 2011 Reference Materials The following can be obtained from the LSU School of Dentistry Bookstore. These books are not required for the EDDA course, but these reference materials can be very helpful to EDDA students and career-minded dental assistants. Modern Dental Assisting (text book), 9 th edition, by Bird and Robinson, published by Saunders/Elsevier. Whether you are a new student to dental assisting or expanding your role in this profession, this text book provides the tools and resources you need to move forward. Included with the book are a Multimedia Procedures DVD and an Interactive Dental Office CD-ROM (the DVD and the CD-ROM are both Windows- and Macintosh-compatible). The DVD provides 60 short video clips of specific skills the dental assistant performs in the clinical setting. Emphasis in this DVD is on the expanded functions delegated to the credentialed dental assistant. The CD-ROM helps dental assistants learn the content of the text book through a series of exercises. Student Workbook (supplement to Modern Dental Assisting), 9 th edition, by Bird and Robinson, published by Saunders/Elsevier. Student Workbook is an optional supplement to the text book and is sold separately. The content of the workbook matches the text book chapter by chapter to help dental assistants master and apply key concepts and procedures to a clinical situation. Dental Instruments: A Pocket Guide, 9 th edition, by Linda R. Bartolomucci Boyd, published by Saunders/Elsevier. This guide is an optional purchase and, like the workbook, is sold separately. Dental Instruments helps dental assistants master the identification and use of dental instruments. It includes both common and specialty instruments. Purchasing these three reference books as a complete set from the LSU School of Dentistry Bookstore can save you money. Call the bookstore at 504.941.8130 for more information. 4

CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION EDDA / APRIL 2011 Louisiana EDDA Certification Requirements Louisiana requirements for EDDA certification are not the same as the requirements for enrolling in LSU s EDDA course. As stated previously, the EDDA course participant must successfully pass the written examination and clinical evaluation to receive credit toward the Louisiana requirements for expanded duty dental assistant status. After completing the LSU EDDA course: Dental assistants who successfully complete the course must complete and sign an EDDA Application for Certification Confirmation and return it to the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry (LSBD). This application is available on the LSBD website www.lsbd.org and involves just three easy steps. First, go to the home page and click on Forms on the vertical menu bar. Second, when the Forms page comes up, click on EDDA Application. Third, when the EDDA Application for Certification Confirmation form comes up, print a copy. The instructions for completing and signing the LSBD s EDDA Application for Certification Confirmation form require that the applicant return the form to the LSBD along with each of the following: 1. Check or money order payable to the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry in the amount of $100 2. Copy of your LSU EDDA course completion certificate 3. Copy of proof of completion of an LSU CDE radiology course or other LSBD-approved radiology course 4. Copy of a current CPR certification card. The CPR course must be American Red Cross Professional Rescue Course or American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or ASHI BLS Pro. (CPR courses that are completed entirely online will not be accepted.) Note: All expanded duty dental assistants are required to display their LSBD certificate confirmation in a conspicuous place to be seen by all patients seen by the expanded duty dental assistant. Please DO NOT bring the check or money order, the copy of proof of completion of an approved radiology course, or a copy of your current CPR certification card to the EDDA class. These items are only to be sent to the LSBD along with a copy of your LSU EDDA course completion certificate. 6
