Airborne Particles: Origins, composition and effects Conference with Exhibition Tuesday 16th, Wednesday 17th December 2008 at the Society for Chemical Industry, Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PS Introduction Airborne particles are the most serious air pollutant in Europe in terms of health effects, and they also play a major role in climate change. Until very recently, legislation has been based on particle mass concentrations such as PM10, but it has become increasingly apparent that this measure is too crude to form the basis for good understanding of the scientific issues. The 2008 Ambient Air Quality Directive contains a requirement to monitor the composition of airborne particles, and the collection of reliable data on many specific properties of particles is a very active area of research. This timely conference brings together many leading figures from the field, covering particle composition, optical and physical properties, health effects, sources and legislation, and will provide a broad and up-to-date survey of this important topic.
