Blavat Family Scholarship One $500 award is being offered based on need with preference to applicants with minor children living at home and/or who are pursuing careers in geriatric nursing. Application must include a one page essay that answers the following: Things I never knew about my parents/grandparents or for those whose parents/grandparents are no longer living. Essay may be Things I d want my children to know about me. This scholarship was created in memory of Helen and Walter Blavat by their daughters. It was only following their parents death they became aware of the sacrifices their parents made that enabled Helen to attend nursing school. The Blavat s were longtime Shoreline residents. Walter was fully disabled and by his early 50s, was unable to continue working. Helen began working as a nurse s aide in various nursing homes to help support the family. Liking the work, Helen enrolled in the SCC Nursing Program. She continued working in geriatric nursing throughout her career well into her 60s. Elizabeth R. Thomas Alumni Nursing Scholarship Two $500 awards are being offered based on need, merit, and commitment to serving diverse communities and potential in nursing. Elizabeth R. Thomas began her career as an LPN, graduated from Shoreline Community College in 1982 with an AAAS degree, and became an RN. She continued her education at Seattle University and was the first African American to complete the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program and the University of Washington School of Nursing, and the first one to work as an ARNP in Seattle. Elizabeth was a pediatric nurse practitioner at Odessa Brown clinic for over 25 years before her retirement. Due to Elizabeth, many contributions she has made in her practice and throughout the district and state nurses association, she was inducted in the WSNA Nurses Hall of Fame in 2000. Ms. Thomas passed away February 8, 2011. Scholarship awards will be based on need, merit, commitment to serving diverse communities, as well as a recipient s potential in his/her nursing career. The glassybaby kindness Nursing Scholarship Two awards of $1,600.00 are being offered. Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation, and must also include a one page essay answering the following: Describe the importance of kindness and giving back and how he/she presently gives and/or plans to give back in the future. glassybaby is more than beautiful hand blown candle holders; it s also about kindness and giving. The SCC Foundation along with three other local nursing education programs became recent recipients of glassybaby s kindness. Their perfectly imperfect glassybaby seconds sale took place this past June 2014. The four schools shared more than $13,500 raised by the sale. This scholarship may be used for SCC tuition, books, and/or required materials at SCC. Recipients will be requested to visit the glassybaby hot shop and studio in Madrona at a mutually agreed upon time. Joan Heeter Memorial Nursing Scholarship Four $1,500 awards are being offered based on need with preference for awards given to midlife women returning to school. Joan Heeter became a nurse after she attended Olympic College in her fifties. Her husband established this fund in memory of his wife after her passing. This scholarship is for nursing students and will be awarded based on need and with preference given to midlife women returning to school.

(Continued) Margaret Mallett Nursing Scholarship Eight $1,000 awards are offered based on need, merit, and community involvement. Margaret Mallett was born in 1912 in North Dakota. She came to the Northwest in 1923, graduated from Ballard High school in 1930, and graduated from the Seattle General Hospital School of Nursing in 1933. Margaret passed away in Seattle in 1989. This fund was established in memory of Margaret by her son. This nursing scholarship will be awarded based on need, merit, and community involvement. Sonia O Kemp Nursing Scholarship Two $2,375 awards are offered based on need. Established from the Sonia O. Kemp Charitable Trust fund in 2009, this nursing scholarship will be awarded to two Shoreline Community College Nursing students who display financial need. Tammi O Brien Shanks Memorial Nursing Scholarship One $4,000 award is being offered. Preference will be given to applicants who are parents with minor children living at home. Tammi O Brien Shanks graduated from SCC s School of Nursing in 1996 and worked at Northwest Hospital as a surgical nurse for 12 years. In 2001, she was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The hardest thing she ever had to do was give up her nursing career due to her disability. She was patiently awaiting a lung transplant at the time of her death. This scholarship established in memory of Tammi by her family and friends in 2009 will assist students in the Nursing Program here at SCC. Joseph W Sullivan Nursing Scholarship One $2,850 award is offered. Applicant must be of Filipino descent, be an ongoing SCC student with a minimum SCC clvl 3.0 GPA, and display financial need. Recipient is to send notification to the SCC Foundation: 1. By the end of the calendar year in which the award was given, addressing how they are doing in the program. 2. Within one year following graduation from SCC addressing how their career is progressing. The Joseph W. Sullivan Nursing Scholarship was established by his widow in December 2013 to honor her late husband s memory and his request to provide assistance to nursing students who have financial need, and are of Filipino descent. Vivian Wellman Batty Memorial Nursing Scholarship One $1,000 award is offered. Applicant must be a Washington State resident (as defined by SCC). Preference will be given to applicants with financial need who are parents with minor children living at home. Application must include a one page essay answering the following question: How will I give back to my community with my nursing degree? Vivian Wellman Batty graduated from Edison Nursing School in the early 1960s. She entered nursing school while she was in her early 40s, and her graduation fulfilled a life-long dream to become a nurse and a service to others. Most of her nursing career was spent at the VA Hospital on Beacon Hill, and it is there that she served many of the veterans from the Vietnam War. She dutifully cared for all of her patients, but on occasion would bring one of her six children to visit some of the young vets, mostly to show appreciation for their service. Vivian was truly a quiet trailblazer for independence. She was strong and courageous and was absolutely dedicated to the nursing profession.
