Graduate Assistants and Fellowships The School of Public Health offers Graduate Awards to students who are in good academic standing and demonstrate merit. Students should submit a separate application for each award they wish to be considered for. A description of each award and its eligibility criteria is listed below. The David Axelrod Fellowship Awarded to MS or MPH students only The David Axelrod Fellowship was founded in 1994 in honor of the former New York State Health Commissioner, for the purpose of promoting academic and creative excellence in public health. Dr. Axelrod's career exemplified an activist, innovative vision of the role of public health policy. The Fellowship provides a single incoming Master's level student a $10,000 stipend for one academic year and partial tuition. Application deadline is February 1 Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have permanent residency and must have completed an application for graduate study at the University. MS and MPH degree applicants are eligible to compete for this award. The award is for entering students only. Applications will be reviewed by the faculty of the School and the Axelrod Endowment Committee. The William Randolph Hearst Fellowship Awarded to MS or MPH students only The Hearst Fellowship of the School of Public Health promotes academic and creative excellence in public health among students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The fellowship is available to support incoming minority students. The fellowship provides a stipend for one academic year and partial tuition. Application deadline is February 1 Eligibility: Applicants must be members of one of the following under-represented groups: African- American (a person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa), Latino (a person having origins in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Caribbean, Central America and South America), or Native American (a person descended from any of the original peoples of North America and who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition, which includes American Indians and Alaskan Natives). Minority applicants who are citizens of the USA are eligible to compete for this award. Only incoming students who will pursue the MS or MPH degree will be considered. Carson Carr Diversity Teaching/Graduate Assistantship Awarded to MS, MPH, PhD and DrPH students The University at Albany offers competitive, merit-based Diversity Teaching/Graduate Assistantships to graduate students who will contribute to the diversity of the student body in their graduate or professional program. Carson Carr recipients will be expected to either teach or provide administrative
support over the course of their graduate program. While students new to the University at Albany will receive first priority, currently enrolled doctoral candidates who have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation ("ABD") may apply for assistance under this program. Current Graduate Assistants and Teaching Assistants may also apply for a supplement to their current stipends if such a stipend can be demonstrated to enhance their retention in graduate studies. Eligibility: Applicants must be United States citizens or have permanent residency and must have completed an application for graduate study at the University. The Selection Committee will give special consideration to students who are of a race or ethnicity that is underrepresented in our graduate and professional programs but will not make awards solely on that basis. Every applicant will be evaluated on his or her own merits. Some or all of the following criteria will guide the Selection Committee's evaluation of applicants: experience with and/or commitment to working with historically underserved or underprivileged populations (for example, interest in health disparities); graduation from a historically black college or university or other minority-serving institution; first generation in one's family to attend college; history of overcoming substantial educational or economic obstacles, or any other impediment to success; or a member of an educationally underrepresented racial/ethnic group. IMPORTANT: To be considered for this award, applicants must complete the Carson Carr Graduate Diversity Scholar Application, which can be found on the Graduate Admissions website at http://www.albany.edu/gradstudies/diversity.php. The application must be submitted directly to the Diversity Committee for review as instructed on the application form. A copy of the application must also be submitted to Caitlin Reid, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, School of Public Health at cmreid@albany.edu Graduate Assistantships Awarded to MPH students only Graduate Assistants are Master s level students who hold positions in the Dean s Office or within the academic departments at the School of Public Health. Graduate Assistants assist with coordination of the internship program, admissions, marketing and recruitment activities. These positions require good communication skills as well as working knowledge of various computer programs. Desktop publishing and webpage development skills are also desirable. Assistants work 20 hours per week, and in return receive 6 credits of tuition scholarship along with a $9,000 stipend. Eligibility: These assistantships are open to both new and continuing MPH students and are awarded following review of the graduate assistantship application, resume, and personal statement and an interview. Entering students who wish to be considered for an assistantship award must submit their completed application for admission into the graduate program and the assistantship application no later than February 1. Please note that graduate assistantship decisions are not made at the time of admission into the MPH program. Vacancies generally become listed in late spring of each year and awards are made only after a competitive review and interview process has occurred. Teaching Assistantships Awarded to MS, MPH, PhD and DrPH students Some members of the faculty use Teaching Assistants to help manage course paperwork, support student learning, and hold office hours. Teaching assistants are generally advanced students who have
mastered the material presented in the course. Assistants work with their faculty supervisor for 20 hours per week and in return receive 6 credits of tuition scholarship along with a $9,000 stipend. Funding for teaching assistantships varies by semester and by department. These awards are made by the individual department. Doctoral Student Assistantships Doctoral students have an opportunity for funding through their academic departments. Funding for doctoral students varies by semester and by department. Doctoral students should contact their department directly to inquire about applying for an assistantship.
