1 Introduction The UDS clustered Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution is a result of a partnership between Fujitsu and Symantec. The UDS solution is built on the foundation of Fujitsu PRIMERGY server technology and ETERNUS DX storage technology coupled with Symantec FileStore software. The UDS NAS system is designed to provide a full-suite of NAS features, in addition to class-leading performance and scalability. This combination provides to our customers a high function, highly-scalable, and highly-available clustered NAS system. The UDS NAS system with FileStore can be used with any application that requires the sharing of files using Network File System (NFS), Common Internet File System (CIFS), and File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Use-cases such as home directories, web pages, or decision support applications that require sequential shared access are all ideal for the UDS cluster. The UDS NAS Cluster is also applicable when you want just general purpose, high-throughput scale-out processing for unstructured data. The combination of ETERNUS DX platforms and clustered UDS NAS Gateway servers provides a highly scalable unified solution supporting block protocols of Fibre Channel () and Internet Small Computer System Interface (iscsi) and the file protocols (NFS, CIFS, and FTP). The UDS NAS systems are offered as appliance or in gateway configurations and include the following standard key features: Scalability up to 16 active/active nodes Up to 2 PB of capacity File system size up to 256 TB Up to 500 file systems Up to 200 million files Multi-protocol (CIFS, NFS) sharing of file systems Backup operations using both NDMP and/or the built-in NetBackup SAN client CIFS access authentication with Windows Active Directory operations NFS sharing including shared read/write and LDAP/NIS support Simple administration through a single GUI and/or CLI interface Dynamic Storage Tiering (DST) TCP PRIMERGY RX FileStore Nodes Direct integration with Symantec anti-virus software High-speed asynchronous/episodic replication for content distribution and data mining Snapshot files and filesystems manually or automatically based on a schedule ETERNUS DX Storage Seamless upgrade and patch management Page 3 of 15

Based on the very mature Storage Foundation Cluster File System technology, a UDS is a complete NAS solution for multi-protocol file serving (NFS, CIFS, and FTP). Here are some key features: Backup operations using both NDMP and/or the built-in Netbackup SAN client Active/Active CIFS, including integration with Active Directory operations Simple administration through a single GUI dashboard and/or CLI interface Active/Active NFS access including shared read/write capability with a LDAP/NIS support Simple administration of Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs), file systems, disks, snapshots, and Dynamic Storage Tiering (DST) Industry leading performance Diverse workload support Linear performance scaling Fast failover All operations online Native integration w/ SYMC information services: NetBackup Endpoint Protection Dynamic storage tiering Performance and Scalability Availability Features SNMP, syslog, and email notification High-speed asynchronous/episodic replication for content distribution and data mining Multi-protocol sharing of file systems in a simple highly-scalable and highly-available manner Create a snapshot schedule by minutes, hour, day-of-the-month, month, or day-of-the-week Seamless upgrade and patch management Page 6 of 15

3 High performance scaling and seamless growth The UDS Cluster NAS system lets you scale storage and processing independently and seamlessly, online. Because an application may need to scale either storage or processing, or both, this capability gives you a lot of flexibility. One of the key inhibitors to scale-out computing is the requirement to provide a shared storage infrastructure for compute nodes while enabling the ability to increase compute power as applications performance needs dictate. The UDS NAS system solves both of these issues by providing a highly scalable and shared storage platform at the storage tier while facilitating heterogeneous sharing on the compute tier. SPECsfs 2008 IOPS Ranking FileStore 176,728 ops/sec * Near Linear scaling The UDS FileStore cluster can scale up to 16 nodes with near linear performance scaling. When using 16-node clusters, extremely high throughput performance numbers can be obtained. You can begin with a small dual node UDS cluster and add processing power one node at a time, rather than buying a large, expensive system up front. The UDS solution provides industry leading performance and is excellent for small and also large file performance. Active/Active Scalable NFS With the UDS, all nodes in the cluster can serve the same NFS shares as both read and write. This creates very high aggregated throughput rates, because you can use sum of the bandwidth of all nodes. Cache-coherency is maintained throughout the cluster. Active/Active CIFS CIFS is active on all nodes within the UDS cluster. The specific shares are read/write on the node they reside on, but can failover to any other node in the cluster. The UDS supports CIFS home directory shares. Capacity Scaling Up to 2 PB in a single cluster Up to 256 TB in a file system Up to 500 file systems Up to 200 million files per file system Page 7 of 15

4 UDS: A Scale-out NAS solution The storage administrator can configure new ETERNUS DX arrays and also add new capacity from an existing array into the cluster. The UDS system non-disruptively discovers the new storage capacity and automatically places it under FileStore control for use by the client community. As the user community grows and more bandwidth to shared storage resources is required, additional UDS nodes can be non-disruptively added to the cluster. When needed, the resizing of existing file systems can also be performed online with no interruption of service. A simple command is used to both add space to an existing file system and to reduce (dynamically shrink) the amount of free space in a specified file system. Active/Active shared cluster Powered by Quad core Intel XEON 5500 CPUs 4x 1Gb Ethernet ports per node (client access) As client community grows.. add bandwidth, processing power TCP Replicate files to a remote cluster Clients NFS, CIFS, FTP Link aggregation capability 2x 8 Gb Fibre Channel ports per node to storage Scale a single cluster up to 16 nodes UDS FileStore NAS Cluster Supports up to 256 snapshots Grow cluster in single node increments Dynamically grow and shrink file systems 8Gb switched Fibre Channel fabric Automatic storage tiering capability ETERNUS DX storage Anti-virus integration NetBackup and NDMP Add storage access bandwidth & capacity Scales up to 2 PB Max file system size = 256 TB Up to 500 file systems, 200 million files Thin provisioning of physical capacity Disk encryption Disk spin down lowers power consumption Page 8 of 15

4.1 High availability The UDS NAS Cluster is designed as an always on" file service that provides zero interruption of data access for the client community. The loss of single or even multiple nodes does not interrupt file requests on the client tier. This is in contrast to the traditional NFS active/passive failover paradigm. Further, with the modular N-to-N approach to clustered NAS, any node can act as a failover for any other node. 4.2 UDS Always online Design No down time to: Add a node to the cluster <20 Second Client Failover Time Add disks to the storage arrays Add capacity to the storage pools Change the size of the file system No outage if: Network path to cluster fails Node in the cluster fails UDS FileStore Cluster Path to storage fails Disk drive fails Upgrades / Maintenance Every node serves all data, so clients seamlessly migrate from the failed node to the working client. 1 The UDS architecture provides transparent failover for key services such as NFS lock state, CIFS and FTP daemons, reporting, logging, and backup/restore operations. The console service that provides a single dash board interface can be automatically failed-over to another node. The installation service is also highly available and can seamlessly recover, even if the initially installed node fails during the installation of the remaining nodes in the cluster. The use of the underlying Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) technology within FileStore is key to the ability to provide best-of-breed high availability, in addition to class-leading scale-out performance. 4.3 Simple Installation A single node in the cluster is booted from a DVD containing the operating system image, core Storage Foundation modules, and FileStore modules. While the node boots, the other nodes are identified by a discovery process based on their addresses. After the installation of FileStore and the first node is up and running, the remaining nodes in the cluster are automatically loaded with all the necessary FileStore components. Key services are then automatically started on each node to allow the cluster to begin discovering storage and creating file shares. Page 9 of 15

4.4 Ease of Administration The UDS cluster contains a role-based administration model consisting of the following key roles: Storage Master System Dashboard easy to manage many Petabytes These roles are consistent with the operational roles in many data centers. The GUI and CLI interface provides a single point of administration for the entire cluster. An authorized user logs in to the UDS Console that is active on one of the nodes in the cluster. As commands are issued, the required tasks run on all nodes in the cluster. 4.5 Consolidation and storage tiering to reduce costs The value of consolidating several independent islands of file systems built on a variety of NAS devices or appliances into a single large shared pool has many cost benefits. A typical enterprise uses only a total 30-40% of its storage capacity when spread across disparate NAS islands. This results in excessive spending on new storage resources even when there is more than adequate free space in the data center. With the UDS NAS system, you can group storage assets into a large shared pool. This has the impact of improving overall storage utilization and lowering overall costs. The UDS s built-in Dynamic Storage Tiering (DST) feature can also reduce the cost of storage by enabling the effective use of less expensive disk technology. DST lets you do the following: Create each file in its optimal storage tier, based on pre-defined rules and policies Relocate files between storage tiers automatically to take advantage of storage economies Page 10 of 15

Retain original file access paths to minimize operational disruption, for applications, backup procedures, and other custom scripts Automate these features quickly and accurately Files go where they should when they should automatically and transparently /one_file_system /sales /financial /development /current /forecast /2005 /2004 /new_app /history Attach Storage TIER 1 High Speed, higher costs TIER 2 High capacity / lower costs DST lets you use different types of physical storage in a primary and secondary tier configuration. Using simple policies, data is transparently moved from the primary storage tier to the secondary tier. This enables mixing drive technologies and architectures such as very high performance Solid State Disk, high speed 15,000 RPM spinning disks, and very cost effective, large capacity 7,200 RPM disks. Data can be stored initially on the secondary tier and then dynamically promoted to the primary tier based on a pattern of access. ETERNUS DX can be configured with many physical storage tiers 100 GB, 200 GB, and 400 GB SSD 300 GB, 450 GB, 600 GB 15Krpm, 1TB, and 2TB 7.2Krpm RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-10, RAID-5, and RAID-6 groups Each file system can be defined across any two physical storage tiers A Performance Tier and a Capacity Tier Data and files that are promoted to the primary tier can be transferred back to the secondary tier in accordance with the defined access time policy. This results in substantially increased efficiency, and reduced costs because of the ability to make better use of the existing storage resources. Administrator defines relocation policy for the file system Relocate based on last access time Relocate based on I/O throughput criteria Manual movement capabilitya Performance Tier and a Capacity Tier 4.6 Data replication Included as a standard feature in the UDS Gateway servers and optional on the UDS 3000 appliance, the replication services provides for high-performance content distribution across multiple clusters. The UDS FileStore Replication is asynchronous (sometimes called episodic) and provides for file-based replication between clusters, together with the advantage of being able to only transfer blocks within specific files that have changed since the last update. With UDS FileStore Replication, the destination file system can be on-line Page 11 of 15

for reads, and updates to that destination can be as frequent as every fifteen minutes. UDS FileStore Replication is ideal for content distribution, or for creating hot-standby replicas of a production environment. local clustering + remote replication UDS Cluster #1 UDS Cluster #2 /apps source Filesystem /apps Destination Filesystem Block delta or whole files are transferred rsync transport NFS or CIFS clients Replication is performed on a per filesystem basis. Replication node uses snapshots and the Veritas L to monitor changes made to the filesystem Changes are applied to a snapshot and made into a live file system once update is complete. NFS or CIFS clients Destination File system can be online for reads 4.7 Integrated content scanning using Symantec AntiVirus The UDS can directly leverage content-scanning and anti-virus technology found in the Symantec Endpoint Protection software. This feature allows for scheduled and real-time (on-demand) scanning of files and other data contained within the UDS cluster. When conducted in real-time the content-scanning can be used with multiple file access protocols, including CIFS, NFS, and FTP. No network call to an external anti-virus server is required thus improving performance of data requests and lowering the utilization of the enterprise s network. Files can be automatically quarantined and regular virus definition updates can be obtained by way of the Clients Network DNS based load balancing NFS / CIFS Access Network SEP 11 Linux SEP 11 Linux SEP 11 Linux SEP 11 Linux UDS Cluster Private Cluster Interconnect Symantec Endpoint Protection V11 client can be enabled (license required) Each node can scan for viruses on demand without network call standard Symantec LiveUpdate service. This feature is one of the core strengths of UDS FileStore system and is available to customers using Symantec Endpoint Protection in their IT environments. Page 12 of 15

4.8 Core strengths of FileStore software The UDS FileStore software leverages all the capabilities and strengths of the Symantec Storage Foundation family of products. FileStore contains all the key features of Storage Foundation Cluster File System 5.5 including: Dynamic Multipathing (DMP) Cluster Volume Manager (CVM) Cluster File System (CFS) Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) Dynamic Storage Tiering (DST) I/O Fencing Dynamic Multipathing (DMP) provides load balancing policies and tight integration with the ETERNUS DX storage array to provide in-depth failure detection and path failover logic. The Cluster Volume Manager (CVM) provides a cluster-wide consistent virtualization layer that leverages all the strengths of Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM ) including online re-layout and resizing of volumes and online array migrations. Mirror underlying FileStore file systems across separate physical frames to ensure maximum availability on the storage tier. This technique seamlessly adds or removes new storage, whether single drives or entire arrays. The Cluster File System (CFS) complies with the Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) standard. It also provides full cache consistency and global lock management at a file or sub-file level. CFS lets all nodes in the cluster perform metadata or data transactions. Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) technology monitors communication, and manages failover for all nodes in the cluster and their associated critical resources. This includes virtual addressing failover for all client connections regardless of the client protocol. Dynamic Storage Tiering (DST) automatically and transparently moves files to different storage tiers to respond to changing business needs. I/O fencing further helps to attain data integrity in the event of a multiple network failure by using the ETERNUS DX storage to ensure that cluster membership can be determined correctly. This virtually eliminates the chance of a cluster split-brain from occurring. Page 13 of 15
