Leveraging Partners and Open Source Technology in your Mobility Strategy Greenway Story!
Greenway Mobility Roadmap Greenway envisioned to have EMR Lite PrimeMOBILE, for all the major mobile platforms and devices by 2012. PrimeSUITE is an all in one EHR and Practice Management solution form Greenway. PrimeMOBILE is based on functionalities of PrimeSUITE. 14
Initial Stage Challenges How can we reduce development time for at least simpler mobile applications? Greenway partnered with a vendor for iphone and ipad application development Can we use certain accelerators and enablers to expedite the development and testing process? Successful delivery.. Application development for new platforms Do we need completely new set of skills for varied mobile platforms and devices? No knowledge retention? Almost new team for application development for each unique platform? Wouldn t leveraging domain knowledge be advantageous? 15
Strategy Formulation & Approach Leverage cross platform development tool for simpler apps Partner with a specialist to trust on functional value adds Retain same resources for multiple platform based application developments Approach Partner with a domain specialist Evaluate and finalize a cross platform tool Use native SDKs where necessary Greenway to closely monitor UI. Vendor to leverage domain expertise on functional aspects Initiate parallel activities for mobile development on various platforms 16
Who is an Ideal Partner? A partner who not only has hold on his set of technology, but is also flexible to experiment and adapt new technology. A partner who is open to leverage open source frameworks and at the same time appreciate the benefits of native SDKs. A partner who is not only an extended development team but an extended strategic partner as well. A partner who is not only technology shop but a domain expert, who values what goes on mobile at par with how it goes on mobile. 17

Technology Selection Native Apps- Platforms SDKs: Xcode IDE, Instruments, ios Simulator, and the latest Mac OS X and ios SDKs. Android Development Tools (ADT) Blackberry JDE Web Apps- Server-side Platforms.NET, LAMP, Java EE, Ruby-on-Rails, Python HTML, CSS and Javascript jquery Mobile/ jqtouch/ Sencha Touch/ Blackberry WebWorks Cross Platform Frameworks Titanium Mobile, a Javascript based MVC framework PhoneGap, a framework that allows development of native apps on 6 different platforms using HTML5, Javascript and CSS Rhodes from RhoMobile, a Ruby-based development framework to generate native applications on various mobile platforms 19
Greenway chose Appcelerator Benefits: Appcelerator Titanium allows development of cross-platform native applications using existing web skills like Javascript, HTML, CSS. Key driver for decision: Appcelerator s cross-platform nature as PrimeMOBILE s roadmap spans across all major smartphone. Currently, the Android version of PrimeMOBILE is developed using Appcelerator. Single codebase supports multiple device platforms and form factors Easy to learn and use API No need to learn multiple programming languages and SDKs Free and Open source Drawbacks relevant to our case: Supports ios, Android and Blackberry. Support for other platforms is still under development 20
Greenway chose Native SDKs Native SDKs allow development of applications that utilize full potential of the platform. Example of native SDKs: Silverlight for Windows Mobile Blackberry JDE Android ADT ios SDK In the past, Greenways has developed ios application using native SDK, as there was no reliable alternative existed at that time to allow crossplatform development. Greenway has chosen Silverlight for the Windows Phone version of PrimeMOBILE, as crossplatform framework such as Appcelerator is not yet available to support that platform. It is part of Greenway s roadmap to eventually bring all mobile versions under a single code-base which is easier to maintain. 21
As is to To be State Greenway mobility vision Greenway mobility Strategy & Roadmap Greenway enters market with EMR Lite iphone/ ipad mobile solution Greenway offers mobile solutions for all major platforms Greenway offers mobile market with newer mobile solutions Greenway continues to expand mobility footprint in Healthcare industry.. 22

FDA Guidance for Mobile Medical Apps Back The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a proposal that would allow it to regulate smartphone and tablet apps that relate to health and medical needs. Currently, the proposal is a guidance and not legally enforced responsibilities. This guidance apply to a subset of mobile apps called Mobile Medical Apps. Mobile medical apps are those that meet the statutory definition of a device; and either: are used as an accessory to a regulated medical device; or transform a mobile platform into a regulated medical device. The following categories DOES NOT fall under mobile medical app: Mobile apps that are electronic "copies" of medical textbooks, teaching aids or reference materials, or are solely used to provide clinicians with training or reinforce training previously received. Mobile apps that are solely used to log, record, track, evaluate, or make decisions or suggestions related to developing or maintaining general health and wellness. Mobile apps that only automate general office operations with functionalities that include billing, inventory, appointments, or insurance transactions. Mobile apps that are generic aids that assist users but are not commercially marketed for a specific medical indication. Mobile apps that perform the functionality of an electronic health record system or personal health record system.
