Curriculum Vitae of Vincenzina (Enza) Messina Personal Details Name and Surname: Vincenzina (Enza) Messina Place and Date of birth: Pisa, 05.01.1966 Nationality: Italian Permanent Address: Via Cesare Cantu 40, 22060 Novedrate (CO), Italy Phone: office +39-2-64487833 mobile +39-347-4449642 Fax: +39-2-64487839 E-mail: messina@disco.unimib.it Education December 1994 PhD in "Computational Mathematics and Operations Research", University of Milano, Thesis: "Stochastic Optimization Models and Methods" Supervisor: Prof. A. Gaivoronski. July 1990 "Laurea": BSc (Hons.) in "Computer Science", University of Milan Final Project: Analysis of Sequencing Policies in Manufacturing Systems. Academic Position From January 2012 Full Professor in "Management Sciences and Operations Research", Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication, University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy. Responsible of the MIND research Lab (Models and Methods in Decision making). 1998-2011 Associate Professor in "Management Sciences and Operations Research", Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication, University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy. Jan 1999-Nov2005 Deputy Head of the Department Informatics, Systems and Communication, University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy 1994-1998 Assistant Professor in "Management Sciences and Operations Research", Computer Sciences Department, University of Milan, Italy. 1994-1996 Research fellow at Brunel University, UK, working on a CEE project on "Modelling Uncertainty and Optimization" Research Interests My research activity is mainly devoted to the development of models and methods for decisions under uncertainty. This activity started with a focus on optimization algorithms for stochastic programming models through the study of decomposition methods for large-scale linear programming models. These modelling techniques have been applied to the solution of risk management problems in different domains such as finance, supply chain and environment.

More recently, my interest has been devoted to the development of probabilistic models for data analysis. In particular, my research activity addressed the problem of integrating probabilistic reasoning and machine learning models with relational representation. This is motivated by the fact that traditional machine learning models are not consistent with the analysis of heterogeneous and possibly interrelated data. In this area my contribution has been devoted to the development of both static and dynamic models for relational clustering and classification in different application domains such as web mining, system biology, finance, ambient intelligence, e-forensics. Data and Web mining Web document page classification and clustering algorithms based on probabilistic and relational models. Hidden Markov models for web customer profiling using click-stream analysis. Knowledge extraction from semi structured and non structured documents, sentiment and opinion mining on social media. Systems Biology and Analysis of Biological Data Development of relational clustering algorithm for the analysis of biological data. In particular, for discovering relations among gene expression and drug activity patterns and to perform both exploratory data analysis and inference of genetic regulatory networks. Mathematical programming models for analysing metabolic networks. Finance Development of probabilistic models for scenario generation in stochastic programming models. Tracking and forecasting the stochastic volatility through the bayesian estimation of the parameters of a stochastic process with jumps on the base of the discrete observation of prices Ambient Intelligence Image pre-processing and anomaly detection in video-surveillance systems. Development of a relational Bayesian dynamic framework for multi-object tracking and activity recognition with particle filtering based inference. e-forensics Development of classification algorithms based on Support Vector machines for emotion recognition from audio stream data in the judicial domain. Information extraction and summarization from multimedia documents. Other research activities: Risk management and resource allocation Development of evaluation and optimization models for project analysis and risk management through stochastic programming. The focus of the research is on representation of uncertainty, scenario generation and risk analysis. Stochastic models for environmental planning problems under uncertainty have been developed for evaluating environmental projects. In this case, real option models combined with decision analysis and stochastic programming have been used for evaluating possible impact of environmental projects. Large scale linear programming models: - Development and implementation of pre-solving techniques for the reduction and analysis of large scale linear programming problems. - Decomposition techniques for stochastic programming problems. - Optimization algorithms for sales allocation models in the pharmaceutical market.
