I. CADC CERTIFICATION-COUNSELING AND ADDICTION STUDIES The educational curriculum at New Hope School of Counseling satisfies the accrediting requirements of the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association, Inc. (IAODAPCA), and the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse. The graduating student will have educational hours that will be accepted in all fifty states and several international organizations. Certified Program Description Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Detail for CIP Code 51.1508. A program that prepares individuals to provide evaluations, referrals, and short-term counseling services to help people prevent or remediate personal problems, conflicts, and emotional crises. Includes instruction in human development, psychopathology, individual and group counseling, personality theory, patient screening and referral, interviewing skills, professional standards and ethics, and applicable laws and regulations. The Program is designed for students who seek employment in the addictions and family services field. As an alternative to the conventional counseling program, the program synthesizes traditional counseling curriculum with current, relative, and imperative prevention, treatment, and intervention courses. Admission criteria IAODAPCA requires students enrolled in C.A.D.C. certification classes to have completed their G.E.D. or high school diploma before enrollment in a CADC Certification Program. Pharmacology of Addiction 30 clock hours History of psychoactive drugs, their classification and effects of psychoactive drugs, the progression of drug use, abuse and addiction, prevention and treatment for addiction. Sexuality, Intimacy and the Addictions 30 clock hours This course will analyze how the addictive system is maintained by distorted belief systems and impaired thinking which keeps the behavior unmanageable. What is sexual addiction, how to diagnose it and how to effectively treat the addiction. Family Systems 30 clock hours Family crisis. Profile of a functioning & dysfunctioning family system. Counseling for the family provides the forum for lasting and powerful change, as well as breaking the cycle of addiction. This course will address the issues of codependency, family roles, rules, self-esteem, abusing family, boundaries and subsystems. Road map to recovery. Dual Diagnosis 30 clock hours This course provides a basic understanding of how to diagnose and treat chemical dependency and mental disorders. DSM IV. Personality Disorders, depression, bipolar disorders, anxiety, schizophrenia, cognitive disorders. Relapse prevention. Assessment and treatment approaches for dual disorder clients. HIV/AIDS Seminar 6 clock hours This course will define the modes of HIV/AIDS, what is the disease, who is at risk and characteristics of AIDS, its transmission, prevention, treatment and legal issues for the patient with HIV/AIDS infection. II. MISA I MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM Detail for CIP Code 51.1508. This program offers 270 hours of study. This MISA I program offered by New Hope School of Counseling provides a comprehensive understanding about the effective diagnostic and treatment of clients with concurrent mental disorders and chemical dependency. The pathologies of both fields reflect the necessities of integrative services offered in diverse health institutions such as hospitals and community health services. This will result in improvements in early detection as well as assessment and management. Integration refers to the provision of comprehensive services with staff that are competent in both mental health and drug alcohol skills. This way we will have effective programs for MISA clients. Pre-requisite Courses Overview of Addiction 30 clock hours This overview course will examine the disease concept of addictions, the history of addition and its root causes. The course will review the influences of family history, environment, genetic markers, spirituality, biochemistry, and culture upon addiction. The student will gain a true perspective of the devastation and cost of addiction to the individual, the family and society. Evaluation and treatment techniques and approaches. Pharmacology of Addiction 30 clock hours This course is designed to introduce the student with the history of psychoactive drugs and their classification; how psychoactive drugs affect us, the progression of drug use from experimentation to addiction; an understanding of uppers, downers and psychedelic drugs and their effects; prevention; and treatment for addiction. Dual Diagnosis 30 clock hours This course addresses dual diagnosis, the treatment of clients who have chemical dependency and other mental and personality disorders. It is estimated that 40 70% of all mental health and chemical dependency clients are actually suffering from dual disorders. The conceptual differences between the mental health field and the chemical dependency field often make it difficult to provide an integrated treatment plan. Ethics for Professional 40 clock hours This course provides the student with ethically reasoned answers to the moral dilemmas that counselors face in their everyday practice. Primary Courses Introduction to Abnormal Psychology 30 clock hours This course examines mental disorder using a bio-psycho-social framework. The student will examine theoretical models of psychopathology and of treatment and approaches to assessment and diagnosis. The course will include training on how to diagnosis and intervene in mental illness/substance abuse crisis situations. Human Development 30 clock hours This course will explore the theoretical perspectives of human development and professions that draw upon them. Students will be introduces to multiple dimensions of child development, and place of education in promoting healthy development for all children. The course acquaints students with multiple processes of child development including physical, social, cognitive, linguistic, and emotional development from birth through adolescence, and examines both typical and atypical patterns of development. Dual Disorders II 40 clock hours This course will provide the student with information and issues related to the treatment needs of patients who have a psychiatric disorder in combination with an alcohol and other drug us disorder. The course will include: initial diagnosis & treatment of MISA Clients, dual diagnosis in special populations, treatments modalities, case management and relapse prevention for MISA clients. Therapy & Dynamics of Counseling 40 clock hours This course is a comprehensive study on the integrated treatment of individuals with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse. The course will systematically address the integrated treatment system which includes motivational interviewing, assessment, group treatment strategies, case management, family involvement, interventions, and program design.

The educational curriculum for the Recovery Minister program combines the knowledge of pastoral psychology together with contemporary professional counseling. The field of pastoral psychology includes studies in Biblical and spiritual truths along with the understanding of modern psychological theories and techniques that are applicable to pastoral ministry. RECOVERY MINISTER PROGRAM Biblical Restoration 30 clock hours A careful study of the Biblical teaching on holistic restoration (physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual healing), and the study of the tools that God provides us to provide healing and comfort to those who are suffering. The course will also investigate emotional suffering and its relationship to a child s developmental patterns, behaviors and emotions. Principles in Biblical Counseling 30 clock hours A study of the core principles and techniques of pastoral counseling. The principle areas of study are parenting, marital issues, anger, domestic violence, abuse issues, addictions and mental disorders. The course will also investigate the church as a healing community and how the church addresses and provides solutions to the real problems facing families and communities. Pastoral Counseling 30 clock hours This course will familiarize the student with the principles and techniques of counseling problems, dynamics, and various issues involved in the pastoral counseling process. The student will examine a unique form of therapy that uses spiritual resources as well as psychological understanding for healing and growth. An emphasis will be placed on the unique contribution of biblical truths toward counseling. Introduction to Prevention 30 clock hours The course addresses the well known fact that some youth are at higher risk than others for developing alcohol and other drug problems. It is also a well known fact that preventing these problems requires early, persistent communication programs that use diverse channels and target a variety of audiences. This course will provide a foundation for the student to develop an understanding of the dynamics of such prevention programs along with practical skills for their implementation. Family Intervention 30 clock hours This course examines the variety of situations that plunge the family unit into crisis and the counseling strategies and techniques available to assist the family in recovery. The course will provide instruction and strategies to intervene in the dynamics of a dysfunctional social system within a family unit. Basic Individual Counseling 30 clock hours Building skill necessary to care in the field of ministry, counsel, guide, and mentor others requires that you be able to describe the significance of your personal journey and how to appropriately relate that to others. In this course, you will begin to understand the processes (i.e. renewal of your mind, emotional development, and healing) that emerge in those recovering from addictions. You will develop the ability to problem solve, confront, identify defense mechanisms, and choose strategies of helping people as a minister. III. Leadership DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The educational curriculum for the Leadership Development Program exists to equip emerging leaders for a higher impact in our churches and communities. This program combines the knowledge of biblical teaching on leadership with contemporary professional leadership concepts and definitions. This program will address important issues and concepts in regards to the qualities of a healthy leader, organizational leadership principles, developing a team, implementing effective plans and methodologies, and other leadership challenges. The field of contemporary professional leadership requires theoretical and practical application tools in the areas of pastoral care to individuals, families, congregations, and the community. Includes instruction in pastoral leadership, counseling psychology; crisis intervention; individual, family and group procedures; theological and spiritual counseling; pastoral care; and applications to specific types of ministry The educational curriculum for the Pastoral Family and Marriage Counseling program provides basic training in premarital counseling, marital counseling and parenting. The curriculum is designed to equip students with a working knowledge of the most common problems found in marriages and parenting along with the practical counseling theories and strategies to help couples cope with and resolve their issues that they encounter in the family setting. Students will be provided with an understanding of the assessing the marital problems, establishing marital goals, how to develop and maintain changes, helping resources, and pastoral counseling helping in crisis. Different spousal characteristics that are frequently involved in conflictive marriages are also presented for discussion. This course is not intended to provide professional or extensive marital counseling.

Pastoral Parental Counseling for Children 30 clock hours This course studies the conflicts of parenting in the formative ages of children. The course provides an understanding of the development of the child s character, parental roles and functions, parental responsibilities, and the principles that govern parental conflicts. The course provides helpful tools to promote effective communication, the use of authority and power, and the limits to establish with children. The course provides help counsel, guidance and understanding to help resolve parenting problems. Pastoral Parental Counseling for Teens 30 clock hours This course teaches about parenting for adolescents. Students study the diverse problems that face teens in the areas of loneliness, anxiety, blame, anger, depression, low self-esteem, dating, peer pressure, and communication with parents. The student will also study specific problem area of sexuality such as masturbation, pornography, premarital sex, pregnancy, abortion and sexually transmitted diseases. Other themes include the problems of addictions, learning, choosing a career, and cultivating a healthy spirituality. The course provides help, counsel and guidance the resolution of parenting problems in adolescence. New Year s Day Good Friday Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day Martin Luther King Graduation Requirements Certificate seeking students who have completed all required academic, lab/research, and internship obligations with a 2.0 GPA or higher (on a 4.0 scale) are eligible for graduation. Students are graded during each course of study by the instructor s evaluation of class participation, tests, quizzes, written assignments, and student presentations. The School maintains a level of flexibility in its testing and evaluation of individual students because of the commingling of academic levels. The Grading Schedule is generally as follows (individual instructors will publish grading preferences in course syllabus: A=90 100% B=80 89% C=70 79% F=69% or below Generally, students are not terminated for failure to acquire a skill, but are encouraged to attend additional classes. In so doing, the student is expected to master the particular course requirement. Student Services Housing The School does not maintain housing for students. A list of reliable Realtors and rental properties in close proximity to the School will be provided to the Student that requests housing assistance at the time of enrollment. Student Records- Transcripts Student records are permanently retained by the School and are available to the students upon individual request. Student records will be provided to potential employers only after the Student has made a written request. Transferability of a Certificate The school does not guarantee the transferability of clock-hour courses to another school, college, or university. Credits or coursework are not likely to transfer. Any decision on the comparability, appropriateness and applicability of credit, and whether credit should be accepted is the decision of the receiving institution. Student Placement New Hope School of counseling does not have a formalized student placement program and in no way makes any guarantees expressed or implied regarding student placement upon graduation. However, New Hope School of Counseling and it s staff seek to identify and connect students with opportunities to make use of the skills and knowledge acquired in class. Inquiries made to the School from potential employers will be posted on the bulletin board for student s consideration, but guarantees regarding employment cannot be guaranteed.

Rules and Regulations Attendance / Class Cuts After three unexcused absences, the Student is counseled by the Dean and placed on probation. Should the Student have another unexcused absence while on probation, the Student is counseled again by the Dean and at his/her discretion, may be terminated. Class cuts without prior approval from the instructor or Dean are not permitted and are considered an absence for the entire class period. Admissions Policies The C.A.D.C. Certification (as regulated by IAODAPCA) requires that a student sitting for C.A.D.C. test must have completed a G.E.D. or high school diploma as a minimum level of education. The MISA I Registration (as regulated by IAODAPCA) requires that a student complete their C.A.D.C. certification to be eligible for M.I.S.A. certification. It is required by The New Hope School of Counseling to have completed a High School Diploma or a GED certificate before to register for any program of study. Tardiness A Student arriving after attendance has been taken is considered late and will be marked absent unless the instructor considers the reason for tardiness legitimate. Conduct Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Foul language, possession of a non-prescribed drug or alcoholic beverages, and disrespectful behavior is considered unsatisfactory conduct and may be grounds for dismissal. A Student who conducts himself or herself in a manner detrimental to the School, Staff, or other students will be terminated. Theft of property from the School or another student is grounds for immediate dismissal. Assignments Various assignments will be given to students, depending on the course in which the student is enrolled. Assignments may take the form of essays, questions to be answered, multiple-choice test, fieldwork, local church activities, etc. These will be closely delineated by the course syllabi. Note: Some assignments will be required. Failure to complete any of those assignments may forfeit all credits for that particular subject. Payment Options/Payment Plan Students may make payment of tuition and fees by cash, money order or personal check. Full payment at time of signing enrollment agreement. Registration fee at time of signing enrollment agreement with balance to be paid prior to starting date Refund/Cancellation Policy School shall, when a student gives written notice of cancellation, provide a refund: a. When notice of cancellation is given before midnight of the 5th business day after the date of enrollment by prior to the first day of class, all application/registration fees, tuition, and any other charges shall be refunded to the student. Any books and materials provided by New Hope School of Counseling must be returned, in original condition, before the refund will be processed. b. When notice of cancellation is given after midnight of the 5th business day following acceptance but prior to the close of business on the student s first day of scheduled class attendance, New Hope School of Counseling shall retain no more than the application registration fee which may not exceed $ 150 or 50% of the cost of tuition, whichever is less; c. When notice of cancellation is given after the student s completion of the first day of scheduled class attendance, but prior to the student s completion of 5% of the course of instruction; New Hope School of Counseling may retain the application/registration fee, an amount not to exceed 10% of the tuition or other instructional charges of $300, whichever is less, and, subject to the limitations of paragraph 12 of this Section, the cost of any books or materials which have been provided by New Hope School of Counseling. d. When a student has completed in excess of 5% of the course of instruction, New Hope School of Counseling may retain the application/registration fee, but shall refund a part of the tuition and other instructional charges in accordance with whichever of the following applies:

1. New Hope School may retain an amount computed prorate by days in class plus 10% of tuition and other instructional charges up to completion of 60% of the course of instruction. When the student has completed in excess of 60 % of the course of instruction, New Hope School of Counseling may retain the application/registration fee and the entire tuition and other charges. 2. A student, who on personal initiative and without solicitation enrolls, starts, and completes a course of instruction before midnight of the 5 th business day after the enrollment agreement is signed, is not subject to the cancellation provisions of this Section. 3. Applicants not accepted by the School shall receive a refund of all tuition and fees paid within 30 calendar days after the determination of non acceptance is made. 4. Application/registration fees shall be chargeable at initial enrollment and shall not exceed $ 150 or 50% of the cost of tuition, whichever is less. 5. Deposits or down payments shall become part of the tuition and/or fees. 6. New Hope School of Counseling shall maintain a written acknowledgment of a student s cancellation or written withdrawal to the students within 15 calendar days of the postmark date of notification. Such written acknowledgment is not necessary if a refund has been mailed to the student within the 15 calendar days. 7. If New Hope School of Counseling cancels or discontinues a course, the student shall have all tuition, fees and other charges refunded. 8. All student refunds shall be made by New Hope School of Counseling within 30 calendar days from the date of receipt of the student s cancellation. 9. A student may give notice of cancellation to New Hope School of Counseling in writing. The unexplained absence of a student from the School for more than 15 school days shall constitute constructive notice of cancellation to the School. For purposes of cancellation the date shall be the last day of attendance. 10. New Hope School of Counseling reserves the right to make refunds which exceed those prescribed in this section. If the school has a refund policy that returns more money to a student than those policies prescribed in this Section, that refund policy must be filed with the Superintendent. 11. New Hope School of Counseling shall refund all monies paid to it in any of the following circumstances: a. The School did not provide the prospective student with a copy of the student s valid enrollment agreement and a current catalog or bulletin. b. The School cancels or discontinues the course of instruction in which the student has enrolled c. The school fails to conduct classes on days or times scheduled, detrimentally affecting the student. 12. A school must refund any book and materials fees when: (a) the book and materials are returned to the school unmarked; and (b) the student has provided the school with a notice of cancellation.

Student Complaints COMPLAINTS AGAINST THIS SCHOOL MAY BE REGISTERED WITH THE ILLINOIS BOARD OF HIGHER EDUCATION Students are advised to consult with the academic instructor and the Director whenever academic, financial or other concerns arise that may in any way interfere with academic performance or the completion of their program. The school has an open policy regarding communication, addressing issues and attempting to support its students. The Director can be reached at 773 645 0966 or NHS@newhope-school.org If complaints cannot be resolved by direct conciliation with the School in accordance to its written grievance policy, the complaint may be filed with the Illinois Board of Higher Education, 431 East Adams Street, 2 nd floor, Springfield, IL 62701, or at www.ibhe.org Personal Problems If a student experiences personal or financial difficulty, or if a problem develops concerning some aspect of the School, the student should first consult with his/her faculty instructor. Problems should not be allowed to develop until they become insurmountable. The faculty member should be consulted especially if the student is disenchanted to the point of considering terminating his/her academic relationship with the school. The school staff is always willing and eager to do everything possible to insure that the student succeeds within ethical boundaries. Academic Probation A student who does not adhere to the attendance policy can be placed on probation for 30 days. Should the student be absent while on probation, s/he will be counseled by the school s Director. The result of this type of absences could result in termination. Interruptions in Training / Termination A student who has not successfully completed the academic requirements of a particular course is required to retake the course. The Student is permitted to re-take examinations within a reasonable time as determined by the instructor. Leaves of Absence A student may be granted a leave of absence for a reasonable amount of time as determined by the Director. A request for a leave of absence must be in writing, and the date of the expected return must be specified. If the Student does not return within the specified time and has not notified the School, the Student s contract will be terminated and s/he will refunded the fee for that particular course, according to the Refund Policy. Re-entry A Student who has canceled or has been terminated and desires to re-enter the program of study must notify the School Director and follow the required admission procedures. Student code of conduct Students are expected to attend all the classes for the subject(s) in which they are enrolled. Unexcused absence from more than 30% of the classes for a subject will result in forfeiture of all credits for that subject. An exception to the 30% rule is possible if the absences are due to satisfactory reasons, and if the student is able to satisfy the requirements for the subject (e.g. by completing additional assignments and/or field work). Students that fail to maintain a satisfactory attendance will be counseled by the Director. Continued unsatisfactory attendance will be sufficient grounds for dismissal from the School.
