Cooperation Agreement for the Implementation of a Joint Doctoral Supervision ( Cotutelle de thèse ) between the University of Zurich, Raemistrasse 71, CH-8006 Zurich (hereafter referred to as University of Zurich ) and the University of, [address] (both parties hereafter referred to as partner institution ) Article 1 Subject of Agreement and Applicable Regulations The present cooperation agreement specifies the conditions of implementation of a joint doctoral degree at the two designated partner institutions. Mr/Ms (hereafter referred to as doctoral candidate ) prepares a doctoral thesis in the subject of Title of the thesis: Within the scope of this joint doctoral degree, the doctoral candidate is subject to all regulations of both partner institutions and is bound to fully comply with them in order to obtain the doctoral degree. This requirement particularly applies to the provisions regarding the admission to the doctoral studies, the preparation, acceptance and publication of the doctoral thesis as well as the oral examination, provided that such an examination is required by at least one of the partner institutions. In case of the University of Zurich, the regulation for doctoral studies of the faculty of of the (date) is legally binding. Article 2 Enrollment and Tuition Fees The doctoral candidate has to comply with the admission requirements for the doctoral studies of both partner institutions according to their respective regulations in force. The doctoral candidate has to enroll at both partner institutions for the whole period of the doctorate. The doctoral candidate pays tuition fees to the University of. On the other hand, the University of will waive tuition fees for the doctoral candidate. Concerning the University of Zurich, the doctoral candidate has to pay the tuition fee for the first semester of enrollment at the UZH, even though he/she is exempted from the fee for the rest of the period of the doctorate. Article 3 Insurance The doctoral candidate is obligated to be insured against illness and accident for the entire duration of the doctorate, according to the national legislation of the respective host country. The University of Zurich provides no insurance coverage whatsoever. Article 4 Doctoral Thesis Supervisors The doctoral thesis is prepared under the joint supervision of Prof., University of Zurich and of Prof., University of. Article 5 Research Stays The doctoral candidate has to complete research stays at both partner institutions during the joint doctoral degree. The supervisors of the doctoral thesis jointly determine these research stays. The repartition of the research stays between the two partner institutions have to be well-balanced. In all cases, the doctoral candidate has to spend approximately one third of his/her doctoral study at the host institution and two third at the home institution, starting from the formal acceptance of the topic of the doctoral thesis by the supervisors until the day of the defense of the doctoral thesis. Appendix 1 of this cooperation agreement defines the repartition of these research stays in detail, especially the duration and purpose of the intended research stays at the respective partner institution. Article 6 Transfer of Credits The doctoral candidate must obtain a total number of ECTS credits. Both partner universities recognize the total of the credits to fulfill the requirements of the respective study regulations. Appendix 2 of this cooperation agreement defines the repartition of the required ECTS credits in detail. Article 7 Language The doctoral thesis will be written in. The summary of the doctoral thesis will be written in. During the doctoral examination the doctoral thesis will be discussed in. Article 8 Doctoral Examination In case a joint oral doctoral examination is foreseen by at least one of the partner institutions, the examination will take place for both partner institutions at the University of, (country) The doctoral examination has to take place no later than dd. month 20xx. The oral doctoral examination has to be taken under the supervision of an examination board. The examination board is to be constituted in equal parts by academic representatives of both partner institutions, including both of the doctoral thesis supervisors and according to the regulations in effect at the date of the enrollment for the joint doctoral degree of both partner institutions. The examination board therefore consists of members for each university. Each partner institution pays for the expenses incurred by the oral doctoral examination and its examination board (at the University of Zurich, those costs are at the expense of the corresponding institutes). Article 9 Exchange of Information and Documents The two partner institutions mutually exchange all information and documentation that is necessary for the implementation of the joint doctoral degree through the supervisors of the doctoral thesis. This particularly refers to the regulations, stipulations and procedures concerning the deposit and publication of the doctoral thesis. Article 10 Deposit, Designation and Publication of the Doctoral Thesis The details about deposit, designation as a doctoral thesis from both partner institutions and publication are regulated according to the partner institutions regulations in force at the time of the enrollment of the doctoral candidate (see article 1). Article 11 Doctoral Diploma After the formal completion of all requirements necessary to obtain the doctoral degree according to doctoral regulations of both partner institutions (see article 1), the partner institutions award the doctoral degree. Each partner institution issues a doctoral diploma for the same doctoral thesis. The text of the diploma must specify that the obtained degree is a joint doctoral degree ( Cotutelle de thèse ) between the University of Zurich and the University of. The title of the diploma of the University of Zurich is Doktor/in der (Dr..). The title of the diploma of the University of is. The diplomas awarded for the doctoral thesis of this joint doctoral degree do not entitle the doctoral candidate to hold two doctoral titles. Article 12 Duration and Extension of the Doctoral Research Period The research period for the doctorate has started on (Date of the formal acceptance of the topic of the doctoral thesis (initial acceptance) at the University of Zurich) and is ending on the day of the doctoral examination (according to Article 7). Any extension must be jointly approved and stipulated in written by the doctoral thesis supervisors of both partner institutions. Article 13 Validity The present cooperation agreement for the implementation of a joint doctoral degree comes into effect with the signature of both partner institutions as well as the countersignature of the doctoral candidate. It remains in force until the awarding of the doctoral title by both partner institutions. The doctoral candidate agreement is considered terminated if one of the universities, one of the supervisors or the doctoral candidate withdraws from this agreement in written form or if the doctoral candidate does not fulfill the above-mentioned provisions. All signing parties from both partner institutions must be notified. The official termination date will be the date when both partner institutions have received the notice of the withdrawal. In case one of the supervisors of the doctoral thesis resigns from his/her function, the doctoral candidate has to find a replacement within one semester with the assistance of the resigning supervisor. If no other supervisor can be found, both partner institutions declare the cooperation agreement as terminated after this time period. The resigning supervisor notifies the end date of his/her function as a supervisor to all signing parties in written form. Any modification of the subject matter of the agreement has to be set out in writing and agreed upon by both parties. They are issued in three original copies, which are distributed by the doctoral candidate to the concerning office of each partner institution with copies to the advisors.
