Configuring and Monitoring Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Chapter 1 Configuring and Monitoring Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 This chapter deals with the steps involved in the configuring and monitoring the Microsoft Virtual Server 2005. 1.1 Administering the eg Manager to monitor Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 1. Log into the eg administrative interface. 2. eg Enterprise cannot automatically discover Microsoft Virtual Server. You need to manually add the server using the ADD/MODIFY COMPONENTS page (see Figure 1.1) that appears when the Infrastructure -> Components -> Add/Modify menu sequence is followed. Remember that components manually added are managed automatically. Figure 1.1: Adding a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 1

Configuring and Monitoring Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 3. When you attempt to sign out, a list of unconfigured tests appears. Figure 1.2: List of Unconfigured tests to be configured for the Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 4. Click on the System VS Guest test to configure it. Figure 1.3: Configuring the System Vs Guest test 5. To configure the test, specify the following in Figure 1.3. TESTPERIOD - How often should the test be executed HOST - The host for which the test is to be configured. PORT - The port at which the HOST listens. DOMAIN - Specify the DOMAIN within which the virtual guests reside. If the guests belong to a specific domain, an administrative account in that domain can be provided in the ADMIN USER field. On the other hand, if the guests belong to different domains, specify "none" in the DOMAIN field, and specify a local administrator account name in the ADMIN USER field below. Prior to this, you need to ensure that the same local administrator account is available or is explicitly created on each of the virtual machines to be monitored. ADMIN USER - This test connects to each virtual guest and extracts statistics of interest from every guest. In order to do so, the test must be configured with user privileges that allow a remote connection to the virtual guest from the virtual host. If the virtual guests are within a DOMAIN, then provide a domain administrator account name in the ADMIN USER text box. If the DOMAIN parameter is set to "none", then a local administrator account has to be specified in the ADMIN USER text box. Prior to this, you need to ensure that the same local administrator account is available or is explicitly created on each of the virtual machines to be monitored. In either case, the eg agent should be able to connect to each guest operating system. 2

Configuring and Monitoring Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 ADMIN PASSWORD - The password of the ADMIN USER needs to be provided here. CONFIRM PASSWORD Confirm the ADMIN PASSWORD by retyping it here. DETAILED DIAGNOSIS - To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eg Enterprise suite embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eg agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the detailed diagnosis capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option. The option to selectively enabled/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled: 6. Next, signout of the administrative interface. 1.2 Monitoring the Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 To monitor the Microsoft Virtual Server 2005, do the following: 1. Login as a monitor / supermonitor user. 2. Click on the components option in the menu bar, and select the Servers option from the components menu. 3. From the component list page, click on the Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 for which you wish to view measurements. 3
