Foreword This 2009 Addendum of the National Drug Index updates information related to the new registered and marketed drugs in Lebanon. It does not aim to avail indications for use, adverse reactions or interactions of products. The National Drug Index and its Addendum were compiled by a team of pharmacists from the Ministry of Public Health and verified by Professors of Pharmacy and Medicine from various Universities in Lebanon. The contribution of Manufacturers and Distributors representatives in Lebanon was instrumental in ensuring the comprehensiveness of these documents. This Addendum lists drugs, dosage forms, package sizes, and drug strengths registered at the Ministry of Public Health. It is divided into sections based on the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system. Information is shown in a convenient format with trade information in italics: ATC code Trade Name & Strength Price in Lebanese Pounds B=Brand G=Generic Registration Number at Route Form Container Presentation Code MOPH MOPH Active Ingredients with their respective dosage Agent importing product Manufacturer Country of Origin Responsible Party Country of Responsible Party Each medication listing contains the following information: ATC classification and code. Trade name and strength of the formulation as registered at the Ministry of Public Health (MOH) Composition of the marketed form with the corresponding dosage of each active ingredient. Form & presentation. The local importer (agent) and manufacturer and identified country of origin. The Responsible Party and identified country. The Ministry of Public Health database serial number (Code MOH) and legal registration document number (MOH reg) Generic (G) or original Branded product (B) Public Price of each product in Lebanese pound (LL) based on the exchange rates dated on 29/09/2009. The ATC classification system The Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC) is used for the classification of medications. It is controlled by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Drug Statistics Methodology in Norway, and was first published in 1976. It is described here for the convenience of the users. This description can be found in more detail at www.whocc.no/atcddd/ We attempted to assign an ATC code for every product in the Lebanese market. However, we were able to find the full ATC of few products. These were listed under the 3rd or 4th level of ATC classification to the best of our knowledge. ATC classifies medicines into groups according to the organ or system on which they act and/or their therapeutic and chemical characteristics. It uses 5 levels coding. First level The first level of the code is based on a letter for the anatomical group and consists of one letter; there are 14 main groups: A Alimentary tract and metabolism B Blood and blood forming organs C Cardiovascular system D Dermatologicals G Genito-urinary system and sex hormones H Systemic hormonal preparations, excluding sex hormones and insulins J Anti-infectives for systemic use L Antineoplastic and immunomodulating agents M Musculo-skeletal system N Nervous system P Antiparasitic products, insecticides and repellents R Respiratory system S Sensory organs V Various Second level The second level of the code is based on the therapeutic main group and consists of two digits. Third level The third level of the code is based on the therapeutic/pharmacological subgroup and consists of one letter. Fourth level The fourth level of the code is based on the chemical/therapeutic/pharmacological subgroup and consists of one letter. Fifth level The fifth level of the code is based on the chemical substance subgroup and consists of two digits. v

For example, Metformin is assigned ATC code A10BA02: A: Alimentary tract and metabolism (1st level, anatomical main group) A10: Drugs used in diabetes (2nd level, therapeutic subgroup) A10B: Oral blood glucose lowering drugs (3rd level, pharmacological subgroup) A10BA: Biguanides (4th level, chemical subgroup) A10BA02: Metformin (5th level, chemical substance) The ATC code for a medicinal product may change, for example if the primary indication for the substance is altered.
