As a student in Ivy Tech s Computer Information Systems (CIS) program, you ll get the skills and knowledge you need to play a vital role in keeping your employer s systems up and running. The CIS curriculum includes both theoretical concepts and practical applications, with classes that cover programming languages, operating systems, database management systems, and web design, as well as application programming concepts and practices. Database Management Ivy Tech s Database Management concentration gives you the skills to work with the storage and management of electronic data. Student Directed Studies The CIS Student Directed Studies concentration allows you to select elective courses from a wide list of options, focusing on specific areas of interest. Web surfers depend on the professionals behind the scenes to create sites that are both appealing and functional. With a concentration in Web Management, you could make a career managing great websites, Ivy Tech s Computer Information Technology (CIT) program prepares you to get the career you want in this fast-growing field. You ll learn network management, network security, computer hardware support and operating system administration. The CIT program prepares you to provide technical support to computer users, including hardware, network and operating system support. Computer Security Organizations of all kinds need secure systems that keep their data safe and confidential. This concentration helps you develop an in-depth knowledge of network and information security, along with the technical skills employers want and need. Network In this concentration, you ll focus on developing your knowledge and technical skills related to creating and maintaining computer network systems. PC Support and Administration Computer users need someone to contact when they have questions. Ivy Tech s PC Support and Administration concentration gives you the opportunity to answer that call. Student Directed Studies In Ivy Tech s CIT Student Directed Studies concentration, you choose the elective courses you want that are focused on your specific area of interest. Companies need well-trained professionals to ensure that office tasks are handled quickly and efficiently. In Ivy Tech s Office Administration program, you ll learn the technical and interpersonal skills that will make you a vital link in your company s day-to-day operations. Classes cover the basics of word processing, spreadsheets and databases, and more advanced areas that today s employers demand. Programs are tailored for beginning, intermediate, and advanced skill levels. Administrative Ivy Tech s Administrative concentration prepares you for an automated office environment, covering skills such as word processing and computer operating systems. As an administrative assistant, your responsibilities might include secretarial duties, scheduling work and planning meetings, taking minutes and composing correspondence. Legal If you have in interest in law and you have good language, communication, computer, and organizational skills, our Legal concentration can help you succeed in your career. Legal office administrators perform and coordinate a law office s administrative activities and send information to staff and clients. Your specialized skills would be in demand by law offices and other organizations. Medical Working in a medical office requires specific abilities, including a knowledge of medical terminology and transcription skills. In this concentration, you ll learn how to coordinate a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to succeed in a career in medical office administration. Software Applications Ivy Tech s Software Applications concentration gives you a diverse base of knowledge in word processing, computer operating systems, multimedia design and desktop publishing. Your career choices could include software applications or desktop publishing. Transportation and logistics is a major industry in Indiana. The success of many companies depends upon their ability to accurately move products around the world. Ivy Tech s Transportation, Distribution and Logistics program prepares you to use technology to track goods and increase efficiencies. You ll be prepared for a career in transportation and logistics management where you ll use the latest technologies in supply management, distribution systems, and inter-modal transportation. I wasn t sure college was right for me. Ivy Tech showed me I could succeed. Types of Degrees offered at ivy tech community college At Ivy Tech, you can earn a variety of two-year degrees as well as one-year technical certificates. Before you enroll, check with your local campus to see what types of degrees or certificate programs are available in your area of study. An admissions counselor can help you choose an option that matches your career aspirations. The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree prepares students for a career. The Associate of Arts (AA) Degree prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university. The curriculum is almost entirely made up of general education and liberal arts courses. The Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) Degree prepares students for transfer to a related program at a four-year school or a career in the fine arts. Jennie Dutton, Ivy Tech Community College student Shipping/Receiving Clerk Cargo and Freight Agent First Line Supervisor Degree: Associate of Science Two kinds of Associate of Science (AS) Degree programs are available: programs for technical/professional fields and for liberal arts. AS programs in technical and professional areas prepare students to start their career or to transfer to four-year institutions. AS liberal arts programs prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges or universities. The Certificate can be completed in fewer credit hours than other types of academic programs. Certificate programs prepare students to sit for a certification exam in a short amount of time, and are offered in fields most likely to lead to employment or promotion. The Technical Certificate (TC) is a one-year program that provides education in conceptual and technical skills for specific occupations. 6 7
