Driving Operational Productivity 168
Today s s Business in Telecom 3 Global competition and service with shorter lifecycle, more diversity and lower price Challenges to reduce operational costs and to increase operational al efficiency, by automation, integration and sharing information. focus in this talk Overflowing data throughout the operational organization. No different from other industries. Sophisticated and complicated IT environment. Various systems in place to gather information from daily business activities and store in relational databases: From small specific job applications, to large systems with many applications. 4 Enhancing Operational Vi sibility Leverage the existing investment for BAM (Business Activity Monitoring). Visualize and monitor the changes in the operational field in REAL TIME: For example, data monitored at NOC floor is all needed by the related role players in the network operations - Service assurance, billing, customer relations To find risks and avoid problems: For example, how a network traffic alert impacts SLA and billing Allocate network resources. To find business opportunities: For example, monitoring a customer bandwidth usage trend Anticipate customer needs for an up-sell opportunity. To make quick and right decisions at each role in the network operation now and not later. 169
Operation Dashboard Dashboard is an easy way to enhance visibility to the operations by monitoring critical operation data in real time. To drive intra-day business and operational decision and actions. Not only for executives, but for all levels of an operation to help them manage their roles with their performance metrics (KPIs): Hierarchical Performance Management - From enterprise performance management down to specific network performance monitoring. Operation Dashboard Business Management Service Management NMS EMS Mobile VoIP IP-VPN ATM ADSL Multiple NMSs and EMSs. Other related systems for service trouble ticketing and QoS management. More business systems in relation with billing, revenue assurance, customer relations and etc. 5 Operation Dashboard Multiple Data Sources(and applications) To bring the Real Time operational floor data together with its related enterprise data. Role Based- Different data presentations (views) and performance indicators for each role in the network operation. Different browsers and enterprise portals. 6 For enterprise operation management (EOM): Already an emerging market in the manufacturing industry: Role based dashboards for CEO, CFO, Business/Plant/Line Managers, Engineers, Operators. Single point access with Enterprise Portal including the real-time monitoring displays from the floor control systems, with a dashboard builder r capability. Real time operation leads to proactive business: For example, reallocate network resources for predicted up sells. 170

Operation Dashboard and e-tom Dashboard can be applied for any specific levels or processes Resource Management & Operations (RM&O) in this talk. Integrating IT infrastructures and processes using a messaging bus (EAI) becomes more to Customer be an issue, as a dashboard Strategy, Infrastructure & Product Operations is expanded to the broader Strategy & Infrastructure Product Operations Commit Lifecycle Lifecycle Support & Management Management Readiness or entire e-tom: Marketing & Offer Management Customer Relationship Management To aggregate and visualize key business metrics related to BPM and how BPM affects quality of service and revenue. When logged in accessible data sources are automatically listed, and simply selecting a data source will connect. Custom data source API to integrate legacy proprietary systems. Customizabledashboard displays for each role in the operation and timely Flexibility and No Programming: Need for an easy to use Display Builder: Click & point from pallets of pre-defined objects. Additional custom objects can be added to a pallet for different needs for intuitive data presentation. Real Timeand Event Driven ( alarms by threshold) displays with historian for trend analysis, smooth navigation ( drill-down down & up, zoom & pan), and Interactions ( data input & calculations) to take actions. Efficient Web based distribution ( XML server capability) for different Web browsers and Enterprise Portals. Scalability to support different systems to the entire operations. 173

HMI Perspective From the TeleManagement Forum HMI Team activities: HMI is all the operator sees Importance of the Missing Interface Without it, OSS would not be complete, even if there are perfect Machine-Machine (Process-Process) Process) Interfaces in place. 60-70% of management software code is HMI related, but still programming from scratch every time and program again to maintain High TCO! HMI is all the operator sees This is where all the software functionality is presented to the user. End-users are often forced with reduced HMI functionalities and less interactivity, or even with simple HMIs, wait and pay for the changes to be made Dashboard & Builder enables to focus on application/infrastructure development and maintenance without HMI influence reducing TCO. 14 174
Example - Network Operational Dashboard 15 Realtime Operational Management System Realtime Operational Management System Realtime Operational Management System Realtime Operational Management System To provide real time visibility for QoS information, SLA management and service impact analysis and planning. Real time status and historical views for network infrastructure, OSS application processes, and services displayed by different role based dashboards. Example - SNMP Network Monitoring Dashboard 16 To display tabbed panels for summary, network status, system resources, processes and application, network services, log files, and thresholds information. 175

Example - Operation Management View 19 Conclusions Network Operation Dashboard is a way to share the real time network monitoring information together with its related Enterprise information for supporting intra-day operational decisions. For driving operational efficiency and to leverage the existing applications and systems, and not about creating a new system. Dashboard is not only for executives, but for all levels of an operation to help them manage their roles with their KPIs. Dashboard may be conceived as another GUI, but it is not about waiting and paying for each display to be programmed or changed, and thus requires a user driven builder, reducing TCO. Leading to Ubiquitous Visualization - Anywhere, Anytime and Any Presentation for Anyone, for operation management: Entire organization is working from the same dashboard than different and perhaps wrong views of operational data, one truth. 20 Copyright 2005 SL Japan Corporation Proprietary.
