Figure 3-8 Interfaces on HUAWEI OceanStor S5500T Storage Contrllers 3.3.2 Storage Features for HUAWEI OceanStor S5500T Feature 1 --- Outstanding Performance Storage performance is a complex mix of drive, interface, controller, cache, protocol, SAN, HBA, driver, and operating system considerations. The overall performance of the storage architecture is typically measured in terms of maximum throughput, maximum I/O operations per second (IOPS), and latency or response time. Although each of these performance measurements is important, IOPS and latency are the most relevant to server virtualization. Most modern SANs use a combination of high-speed disks, slower-speed disks, and large memory caches. A storage controller cache can improve performance during burst transfers or when the same data is accessed frequently by storing it in the cache memory, which is typically several orders of magnitude faster than the physical disk I/O. However, it is not a substitute for adequate disk spindles because caches are ineffective during heavy write operations. For HUAWEI OceanStor S5500T storage system, with HUAWEI SmartTier storage feature, it is easy combining solid state disk, traditional SAS and SATA or NL-SAS disk to implement high performance using Smart Tier. Solid state disks producted by HUAWEI can be used for Tier 0 as the high performance layer, SAS disks are used as the performance layer, and the NL-SAS disks are used as capacity layer. Ver 1.0 HUAWEI Technologies Co., Ltd 14
Figure 3-9 SmartTier Feature for HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T Storage System Using SmartTier feature, hotspot data is migrated from SAS or NL-SAS/SATA disk to solid state disk automatically, which means that the hotspot data would be on the high performance layer and it is easy to implement high IO performance. Feature 2 --- Multiple Drive Types Supported HUWEI OceanStor S5000T series Storage System supports SAS, NL SAS, and SATA, FC and SSD disks, fitting into various scenarios. For high performance it is recommended to choose solid state disk (SSD), for both performance and capacity it is recommended to choose SSD and SAS disks, for capacity NL-SAS and SATA disks are recommended. Feature 3 --- Multipathing In all cases, multipathing should be used. VMware ESXi 5.x supports three native multipathing policies, including Most Recently Used (MRU), Fixed (Fixed) and Round Robin (RR). These multipathing policies apply to VMware's Native Multipathing Path Selection Plugins (PSP). In this solution, Round Robin is used as the default multipathing policy, and ALUA protocol is used as the default storage interconnection protocol (SATP). The method for configuring storage interconnection protocol and multipathing policy is shown as following. Step 1. Connect to ESXi host using SSH client. Step 2. Execute the following commands: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule add --satp=vmw_satp_alua --vendor="huawei" -- description "HUAWEI SAN Storage" # esxcli storage nmp satp set --default-psp=vmw_psp_rr --satp VMW_SATP_ALUA Ver 1.0 HUAWEI Technologies Co., Ltd 15
# reboot Feature 4 --- Multiple Front-end Interfaces Supported Multiple front-end interconnection interaces are supported by HUAWEI OceanStor S5500T storage system, including 1Gbps/10Gbps iscsi, 2/4/8/16Gbps FC, 10Gbps FCoE, 10Gbps Toe, etc. Feature 5 --- Thin Provisioning HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T series Storage System allows on-demand allocation of storage space rather than the traditional method of pre-allocating all storage space at the initial stage. It is more efficient because the amount of resources used is close to the amount of resources allocated. In this way, the initial purchase cost and total cost of ownership are reduced. The thin provisioning feature for HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T Storage is called SmartThin, shown as follow. Figure 3-10 Smart Thin Feature for HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T Storage System Feature 6 --- Volume Snapshots The volume snapshots feature for HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T series storage system is shown as follow. Ver 1.0 HUAWEI Technologies Co., Ltd 16
Figure 3-11 Snapshots Feature for HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T Storage System Using Snapshots feature on HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T storage system, it is easy to implement LUN backup and recovery for Specific point-in-time. 3.4 Solution Validation 3.4.1 Validation Tool --- VMware ViewPlanner VMware View Planner is a tool designed to simulate a large scale deployment of virtualized desktop systems and study its effects on an entire virtualized infrastructure. The tool is scalable from a few virtual machines running on one VMware ESX/ESXi host up to hundreds of virtual machines distributed across a cluster of ESX/ESXi hosts. View Planner assists in the setup and configuration of the testing infrastructure, runs a set of application operations selected to be representative of real-world user applications, and reports data on the latencies of those operations. The version of VMware ViewPlanner used for this validation is 3.0.0. The following picture shows the test model of VMware View Planner. View Planner uses the application controller to push virtual desktops to simulate the real-world users applications. Ver 1.0 HUAWEI Technologies Co., Ltd 17
