Surface Preparation RockSolid Deck Restoration is suitable for use over a multitude of differing wood types and composite decking that are properly prepared. Do not apply RockSolid Deck Restoration to any surface that has been coated with paint, stain, sealers or water repellents without first properly preparing the surface. Failure to follow this warning will result in improper adhesion and coating failure. All Wood Surfaces 1. Sweep all dirt and debris from the deck surface. 2. Use RockSolid Wood Stripper to effectively remove all paints, stains, sealers, and mill glaze from the wood. This will involve scrubbing both the horizontal and vertical surfaces with a stiff bristle brush. Pressure wash (no more than 800 psi) to remove all residue and debris. Spraying with a water hose is not sufficient. Repeat process if necessary following the manufacturer s instructions. 3. Use RockSolid Cleaner & Brightener to clean the surface. Apply and scrub as described in the manufacturer s instructions. Pressure wash (no more than 800 psi) to remove all cleaning residue and debris. 4. Complete a porosity check by pouring a small amount of clean water on the deck surface. The water should soak into the wood readily, if the water beads on the surface then further cleaning will be required before moving forward. 5. At this point the deck should be allowed to dry for 48 hours. 6. Sand the deck using an orbital palm sander, vibrating deck sander, pole sander, planetary machine or by hand using 80-120 grit paper on the vertical surfaces and 60-80 grit paper on the horizontal surfaces. 7. Use a leaf blower or similar to remove all dust and debris from the deck before coating. All Composite Surfaces 1. Sweep all dirt and debris from the deck surface. 2. Use RockSolid Cleaner & Brightener to clean all horizontal and vertical surfaces. Apply and scrub as described in the manufacturer s instructions. Pressure wash (no more than 800 psi) to remove all cleaning residue and debris. 3. At this point the deck should be allowed to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. 4. Sand the deck using an orbital palm sander, vibrating deck sander, pole sander, planetary machine or by hand using 80-120 grit paper on the vertical surfaces and 60-80 grit paper on the horizontal surfaces. 5. Use a leaf blower or similar to remove all dust and debris from the deck before coating. General Raised nail heads, deck screws or loose deck boards should be secured before applying RockSolid Deck Restoration. Remove loose splinters and replace severely damaged or rotting boards. Newly installed pressure treated lumber must be allowed to weather for a minimum of 6 months prior to coating. Always test the absorbency of the wood by sprinkling water on the surface and checking for penetration. If the water beads, the decking must be allowed to weather for a longer period of time before coating.
Mixing Wearing protective gloves, remove the lid, instructions, roller, drill mixer, and tint jar from the bucket and set aside. Take the sealed bag of dry mixture out and carefully empty it into the supplied bucket. Warning: Do not breathe dust! This product contains Free Crystalline Silica which may cause cancer or delayed lung injury (Silicosis). Avoid creation of dust from this product whenever possible. Wear NIOSH approved respirator if creation of dust is unavoidable, or when working in dusty areas. See Material Safety Data Sheet for detailed information. ADD COLORANT Thoroughly mix the product in the tint jar by holding the container closed and shaking for at least 30 seconds. Remove the lid from the tint jar and pour the entire contents into the bucket on top of the dry mixture. ADD WATER 48 oz. of clean cool water must be added to the dry mixture before use. To do this, simply fill the supplied tint jar three times to the inside rim and pour into the bucket. Use a drill and the supplied drill mixer to blend the material at high speed. Use the drill mixer to scrape the sides of the bucket while mixing for a minimum of 3 minutes until a uniform milkshake consistency is achieved. INDUCTION TIME Mixed product MUST be allowed to rest for a minimum of 30 minutes. After this induction period, use the drill and drill mixer to re- blend the product before use. DO NOT ADD MORE WATER AT THIS POINT. PRECONDITIONING OF WOOD SURFACES All wooden decks MUST be dampened with water before application of the RockSolid Deck Restoration system. Use a garden hose and fine tipped spray nozzle to lightly wet out the surface, ensuring that there is no standing water. It may be necessary to re- dampen the deck to keep it moist during application. DO NOT SPRAY WATER ON APPLIED PRODUCT.
Application Step 1: Pour mixed material into a standard 9 roller tray, filling it roughly half full. Replace the lid on the mixed product until more is needed. Step 2: Use a brush to cut in hard to reach areas, spreading the material in a thin and even coat. Step 3: Heavily saturate the supplied 9 looped roller in the coating by rolling back and forth in the tray. Apply the first coat by using downward pressure to disperse the coating evenly through the loops on the roller. The material can be worked back and forth to aid in spreading. Roll forward and backward in a slow motion to achieve best results and eliminate splattering. Note: This first coat may not be 100% uniform and will not completely fill in all voids, cracks, or knot holes present in the decking. The second coat of product will produce a fully uniform finish. Allow the coating to cure for a minimum 6 hours at 72 F between coats. TECH TIP: Between coats, you can use the mixed product to fill screw holes, cracks, and other imperfections that are less than 1/4 deep to help flatten the overall finish. This is best done by using a metal blade, flexible putty knife to fill the areas and scrape off the overfill. Allow these repairs to cure for a minimum of 1 hour before coating over. Step 4: Repeat the above process to apply the second coat of product to all horizontal surfaces. Allow the finished coating to cure at least 24 hours before foot traffic and 72 hours before replacing furniture or heavy objects. Drying time may vary due to weather conditions. IT IS IMPERATIVE TO SWITCH OUT THE ROLLER WITH EACH NEW KIT TO BE INSTALLED Clean Up Clean all application tools with soap and water before product cures. Storage of Unused Mixed Product Mixed material can be stored up to 6 months in its original sealed container at room temperature. It may be necessary to add water (2 oz. at a time) and re- mix thoroughly before reusing. Tech Tips Difficult areas such as deck boards that are warped or cupped will require rolling across the narrow width of deck as well as the length to ensure complete coverage. Brushing may be required. This product will stay fresh in the bucket as long as the lid is securely fastened. If the material appears to be thick add 2 oz. of cool, clean water at a time until the material has the consistency of a milkshake. While mixing make sure to blend until any clumping is uniformly dispersed. In higher temperature applications, it will be necessary to add water to keep the consistency of the mixed product uniform. Add 2 oz. of cool, clean water at a time and re- mix with the drill mixer before use. **If you are not reaching the estimated coverage rates or you would like a smoother finish, you may add 2 oz. of cool, clean water at a time to increase coverage rates while keeping the uniform consistency. NEVER EXCEED 6 oz of water per full kit.
Care and Maintenance Congratulations on finishing the application of the RockSolid Deck Restoration kit. This coating will provide you with a durable and decorative finish that will last a lifetime. To ensure the best longevity of the system it will be important to follow these simple guidelines: 1. Avoid pressure washing to clean the deck. 2. Clean your deck regularly with the RockSolid Constant Clean and a broom. 3. Avoid using metal edge shovels or scrapers. Use plastic tools only. 4. Avoid allowing snow to accumulate on the coated deck surface and handrails.
