Seminar & Project Summer Term 2010 Prof. Dr. Axel Küpper Ulrich Bareth
Summer Term 2010 2 Research Tools and Methods 2.1 Scientific Publications 2.2 Search Engines 2.3 Citations 2.4 LaTeX 2.5 TeXworx 2.6 BibTeX 2
2.1 Scientific Publications In computer science there are several renowned scientific publishers Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) Association for Computing Machinery(ACM) Springer - Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) But also commercial research institutes Gartner Forrester Research Berg Insight
2.1 Scientific Publications TU Berlin has an agreement with many scientific publishers like IEEE, ACM Access based on IP-Address Make sure you are using your VPN connection
2.2 Search Engines Some search engines are specialized on academic publications: Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com/) Microsoft Academic Search (http://academic.research.microsoft.com/) CiteSeer Scientific Literature Digital Library (http://citeseer.ist.psu.edu/) IEEE Xplore Digital Library (http://www.ieeexplore.ieee.org/) ACM Digital Library (http://portal.acm.org/) Springer Link (http://www.springerlink.de/) Collection of computer science bibliographies (http://liinwww.ira.uka.de/bibliography/)
2.3 Citations Reference all your sources (including images) properly Citation format <author names>, <publication title>, <journal>, <volume>, <number>, <pages>, <year of publication> P. Bellavista, A. Küpper, and S. Helal, Location-based services: Back to the future, IEEE Pervasive Computing, vol. 7, no. 2, pp. 85 89, 2008.
2.4 LaTeX LaTeX Styles Is a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program Good introduction to LaTeX in german LATEX eine Einführungund ein bisschen mehr... of Manuela Jürgens fromfernunihagen thoughitisa bit out-of-date(2000) but can easily be used as a LaTeX command reference. IEEE Transactions (http://www.ieee.org/publications_standards/publications/authors/authors_ journals.html)
2.4 LaTeX basics Document example.tex \documentclass{article} \begin{document} Here goes your text %This is a comment and will not be visible in the output \end{document} The documenttext has to bee between the document tags Different documentclasses also for letters {letter} or books {book}
2.4 LaTeX Packages Packages are imported before document description \usepackage[<options>]{<packagename>} \documentclass{article} \usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx} \begin{document} Here goes your text %This is a comment and will not be visible in the output \end{document}
2.5 TeXworx Simple Editor for LaTeX Comes with MikTex or LiveTeX for example On many platforms available pdflatex integrated (direct conversion from LaTeX to PDF)
2.6 BibTeX Reference management software Automatic generation of Bibliography BibTeX links are available in many scientific search engines Bibliography-Styles describe layout of references JabRef to edit and maintain BibTeX entries and Bibliography-Files
2.6 BibTeX example Book Location-based Services by Axel Küpper found on google scholar Direct BibTeX link for importing references @book{kuepper2005location, title={{location-basedservices}}, author={k\ {u}pper, A.}, year={2005}, publisher={wiley} } Citations are used by the \cite{<reference>} command E.g. \cite{kuepper2005location}
2.6 BibTeX hints Normal version of BibTeX is unable to use Umlauts Only in info tags like author or title e.g. \ {u}=> ü Delete temporary files (i.e. bbl-file) before compiling again for updating the bibliography
