The majority of the materials consist of research on George MacDonald, and teaching notes from the class Modern Mythology LIT: 431. Background Information Dr. Rolland Hein is Emeritus Professor of English at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. He earned his B.A. from Wheaton College in 1954, and his B.D. in 1957 from Grace Theological Seminary, Winona Lake, Indiana. Dr. Hein went on to also earn an M.A. in 1963 and completed his PhD. in 1971, both from Purdue University. His dissertation is titled: Faith and Fiction: A Study of the Effects of Religious Convictions in the Adult Fantasies and Novels of George MacDonald. Dr. Hein began teaching literature at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, taught during the '60s at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and joined the English Department at Wheaton College in 1970. He is widely known as an expert in George MacDonald studies, and is also an avid gardener. Scope and Contents Note This collection is arranged in two series: Teaching Materials and Research Materials. The Teaching Materials series primarily focuses on the class Modern Mythology LIT 431, with emphasis on G.K. Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, Madeline L Engle, John Bunyan, William Blake, and others. It includes syllabi and lecture notes from Dr. Hein as well as pertinent articles and some examples of student work. The Research Materials series focuses on Dr. Hein s personal research of George MacDonald and includes articles and notes with background on various aspects of MacDonald s life.
