Programme Information Offered in collaboration with ASIS Singapore Chapter, the SMF Institute Professional Diploma in Security Management is designed for professional security personnel that includes security officers, risk managers, corporate managers, departmental security supervisors, and professional security consultants who are required to conduct security surveys, risk assessments, and investigative work in the corporate environment. The course aims to provide students with the relevant knowledge and skills in security risk management, facilities management, law and ethics, security principles, and key security technologies essential for career advancement in government security, professional security, strategic facilities security, retail security, financial institutions security, corporate security, and major security organisations. Career Prospects Graduates are well-equipped for a career in government and private security organisations. This includes opportunities in consultancy, technology, science, human resources, administration and management. Currently, students are employed by: n Government agencies n Private security agencies n Financial institutions n Retail organisations such as hotels and shopping malls Programme Structure This programme comprises seven (7) units and can be completed in eleven (11) months. Mode of Delivery This programme meets at least twice a week during weekday evenings. Mondays Fridays 7pm 10pm Teaching methods are skills-oriented and competency-based trainings, in the form of interactive classroom lectures, case study analysis, presentations, problem solving exercises and projects that emphasise applications and team work. Assessment Method At the end of each semester, students will be assessed through a written examination as well as a practical assignment. While the written examinations test the knowledge and understanding of the topics learnt; the practical assignments will assess the ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired. Attendance Requirement Students are required to attain a 75% attendance for each unit of study. All non-attendance must be supported by a medical certificate or an approved leave of absence from the Institute. A student who is unable to meet the required attendance may be barred from exam for that specific unit of study and will not be eligible for selection for fieldwork practicum (if any). Progression Pathway Upon completion of this programme, students will be awarded the SMF Institute Professional Diploma in Security Management. This Professional Diploma is recognised by Edith Cowan University for advanced standing in the Bachelor of Science (Security Management) programme with three (3) units exemptions (45 credit points). Graduates with relevant working experiences can also progress to the Graduate Certificate in Security Management, awarded by Edith Cowan University on a case-by-case basis. Programme Fees The programme fees cover school registration, course notes, selected articles, assignments, main examinations, diploma certificate upon completion and transcript. Programme fees are due and payable in two (2) instalments. Unit Description Core Units n Principles of Management n Introduction to Commercial Law n Security and Risk Management n Building Management Systems n Industrial Security Systems and Operations n Physical Security and Facility Management n Individual Project Principles of Management This course exposes the students to the foundations, realities and challenges of management and being a manager. As such, it focuses on the four core activities of a manager: Planning, Leading, Organising and Controlling. Other topics, include but are not limited to: organisational culture, the various environments in which organisations function, ethics, change and innovation will be explored to better understand how, as managers, live, work and thrive in organisations. Introduction to Commercial Law The course is aimed at providing an overview of common spectrum of laws relating to and describes the features and objectives of business organisations and governing commercial activities. It identifies the legal considerations involved in carrying on a business in Singapore, and seeks to arm candidates with a better appreciation of the legal regime that forms the bedrock of commercial transactions. Participants will also be given an overview of the law surrounding the handling of building and facility security, including trespass, detention of persons and safety of the public. Security and Risk Management This unit will provide an overview of the framework and concepts used in the analysis of security and risk levels from an organisational perspective. The student will also learn how to identify risks, and assess and implement protective and / or preventive measures accordingly. Building Management Systems This unit will examine the concept of building management with emphasis placed on the interaction between facility management and security. Fire protection will include detection systems, alarm systems, codes and standards, high-rise fire management, industrial fire management and evacuation procedures. Also, energy management and light control, air conditioning systems, lifts and escalators, and audio system control will be discussed. Industrial Security Systems and Operations The unit covers the understanding of the roles of a security supervisor in the operations and development of industrial security systems. Areas examined include Hotel Security, Retail Security and Warehouse Security. Besides covering the general operational procedures of Security Professionals, the unit also covers the study of intruder detection and alarm systems, access controls, closed circuit television systems and system design, selection and installation including the applications of electronic security technology for the protection of assets of an organisation. Physical Security and Facility Management This unit will develop an understanding of the principles and applications of technology used in physical security systems. The curriculum includes security policy and procedure, highrise building security, personnel movement control and disaster planning. The scientific foundation for physical security technology in modern security applications and techniques will be presented. The technology treated will include: locks, safes, strong rooms, perimeter protection, structural strength of buildings, physical barriers, lighting, conducting and documenting a security survey, and properties of materials for security protection. Individual Project To be done on an individual basis, the project requires participants to undertake security planning, audit and survey based on site visits. This project is intended to provide students with an opportunity to synthesise and apply what they have learnt. Project work will take the form of a substantial workrelated investigative assignment, normally within the students organisation. The product should be a short management report, which will show evidence that a detailed study has been made of the subject and firm conclusions or recommendations drawn. Students must spend at least 30 hours on the project and the report should not be less than 1,500 words, excluding statistical data and appendices.

Application & Selection Procedures Intakes April / October Admission Criteria This is an industry-oriented programme and applicants are required to have a minimum of two (2) years working experience. Applicants should also possess one (1) of the following: n Full GCE A level, OR n ITE Higher Nitec, OR n High School Qualification equivalent to Year Twelve (12) in the case of international students, OR n Certificates from recognised institutions, OR n Having obtained the age of twenty-one (21) (Mature Age Entry) with employment background deemed suitable will be assessed on a case-by-case basis Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in the English Language (EL1) or its equivalent: n GCE O level with grade C6 & above, OR n IELTS minimum band score of 5.5 - (Reading and Listening 5.5) and (Writing and Speaking 5.0) OR n TOEFL score of at least 525 (paper-based) or 200 (computerbased) or 70 (Internet-based) Application Procedure All applications must be submitted to SMF Institute of Higher Learning (SMF Institute) before the closing date. Each application package must contain the following items: n A duly completed application form affixed with one (1) passportsize photograph n Certified true copies of highest academic qualifications and relevant transcripts n Photocopy of NRIC (front and back) n Resume required for matured candidates Private Education Act Under the new Private Education Act, legislated in December 2009, the Council for Private Education (CPE) was set up to regulate the private education industry in Singapore. All Private Education Institutions (PEIs) are required to comply with the regulations under the Act in order to continue operations. Following are the new requirements which SMF Institute has put in place: n PEI-Student Contract As stipulated by CPE with the aim of enhancing the confidence of students and their parents in the quality of education in Singapore, SMF Institute will enter into a standard Private Education Institution (PEI)-Student Contract with our students. The contract lays out the important terms and conditions governing the relationship between the student and SMF Institute. We will honour all terms and conditions spelt out in the contract and in all communication materials. n Cooling-off Period There will be a cooling-off period of seven (7) working days after signing the standard PEI-Student Contract. Students have the right to cancel the contract within seven (7) working days and be entitled to a full refund less any applicable bank administrative charges and consumed fees. After the cooling-off period, SMF Institute s refund policy will apply. n Fee Protection Scheme SMF Institute has in place a Fee Protection Scheme (FPS) to protect the paid fees of both local and international students. The FPS serves to protect the student s fees in the event that the PEI is unable to continue operations due to insolvency, and/or regulatory closure. In addition, the FPS protects the student if the PEI fails to pay penalties or return fees to the student arising from judgments made against it by the Singapore courts. The FPS is compulsory for all students. SMF Institute has appointed Lonpac Insurance Bhd as our FPS insurance provider. Under the FPS insurance scheme, students fees are insured by Lonpac Insurance Bhd. In case of events as stated above, students will be able to claim their paid fees from Lonpac Insurance Bhd. More information about the scheme can be found at our website: www.smf.edu.sg Application Outcome and Acceptance of Offer All applications will be assessed based on the admission criteria and individual merit. Applications which do not meet the criteria will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions Committee. All applicants will be notified of the outcome in writing. SMF Institute reserves the right to revoke any offer of admission when necessary, in cases where a student withdraws from the course, or for disciplinary actions. Awards will be revoked if any of the information in the application is found to be untrue or if evidence of fraudulent documents are found. To confirm the acceptance of offer, successful applicants will have to adhere to the following before the stipulated deadline: n Submit a copy of duly completed and signed PEI-student contract and Advisory Note to Student (Form 12) n Submit all other required documents to SMF Institute n Make payment to SMF Institute of Higher Learning Pte Ltd Refund Policy All non-tuition fees are not refundable. Tuition fees paid before or after commencement of the programme are refundable but subject to the following: % of tuition fees to be refunded 100% 75% 25% If student s written notice of withdrawal is received More than sixty [60] days before the course commencement date Between thirty [30] to sixty [60] days before the course commencement date Less than thirty [30] days to one [1] day before the course commencement date 0% Upon course commencement It takes seven (7) working days to process the refund request upon receipt of the necessary documents. Refund will be less any applicable bank administrative charges. Any request for withdrawal must be submitted in writing with the Request for Post-Enrolment Withdrawal Form (duly completed) to the Programme Administration Department. Request for refund not relating to course withdrawal can be submitted via email to the Department. Fee rebates given to students will be recovered by the School if any student withdraws from the course. Any administrative charge incurred is non-refundable.
