Dental Hygiene Program Fall 2015 The Century College Dental Hygiene Program serves dental assistants currently licensed in Minnesota who wish to continue their education in the field of dental hygiene. The program provides learning experiences to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide culturally competent dental hygiene services to individuals and in the community health setting. In addition to attaining clinical skills, students will develop as ethical and socially responsible oral healthcare providers, equipped to meet the needs of increasingly diverse patients and communities. After the successful completion of two years and one summer at Century College and fulfillment of the requirements for licensure as established by the State Board of Dentistry, the student will be prepared to work as a dental hygienist and/or continue in the educational setting to earn a bachelor s degree through articulation agreements with other colleges in Minnesota. The Dental Hygiene program begins once per year, in the Fall Semester. Courses are scheduled during weekday mornings and evenings (starting as early as 8:00 am and ending as late as 8:00 pm). There are 12 students admitted to the program each fall. To be considered for the program, applicants must have completed the minimum academic requirements by March 31, 2015. See the Dental Hygiene Readiness Determination Form or the Dental Hygiene program brochure for application requirements. Applications for the Dental Hygiene Program will be accepted through March 31, 2015. The College reserves the right to extend the application deadline to May 31, 2015 should the class not fill with the first deadline. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 1. Dental Assistant Requirement: Graduation from an accredited Dental Assistant program. Students must currently be a Minnesota Licensed Dental Assistant. Students may mail a copy of the LDA card with original date of issue and current certification or bring in the original to be copied in the Admissions office. Failure to provide proper documentation will result in your application being denied. Applicants who have at least 1040 hours (equal to approximately six months full-time work) Licensed Dental Assistant (LDA) experience in the past three years by the application deadline will receive priority consideration during the selection process. Applicants with fewer than 1040 hours of work experience will be considered. Please use the enclosed work verification form included in this packet. 2. Science Requirement: Completion of the following science courses with a grade of C or better and an overall GPA of 2.75: Introductory Chemistry (Century Chem 1020-4 sem cr. or Chem 1041-5 sem cr.) 3. Credit and GPA Requirement: Completion of a minimum of 12 semester credits or 18 quarter credits with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5. These credits must be college level. Note: Grade point average will be calculated on all college level - liberal arts credits completed at the time of application to the Dental Hygiene program. Technical credits and credits earned under Pass/Fail, CLEP, Career Development, Learning Lab, Study Skills, Physical Education or English as a Second Language (ESL) courses will not be calculated in the GPA or counted in the 12/18 minimum credits required for admission. Students who have an overall grade point average of less than 2.5 may petition to use only recent college level credits to meet the required 2.5 GPA. Students must complete the recent credits and submit the petition to the Admissions Office prior to the Dental Hygiene Program application deadline. If a student has earned a baccalaureate degree or higher, the minimum 2.5 GPA may be calculated on the final 45 quarter credits or 30 semester credits. The science requirement must also be met. 4. Basic Skills Requirement: All Dental Hygiene applicants are required to comply with the Century College policy regarding assessment testing in reading comprehension, writing, and math. Assessments must be completed prior to the application deadline. All required remedial / developmental coursework must be completed by the end of the summer session that precedes the beginning of the Dental Hygiene program, or the student will lose his/her space in the program. 5. High School Diploma/GED: All Dental Hygiene applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, official transcripts are required. Transcripts must be submitted to the Admissions Office prior to the application deadline. Selection Process At the application deadline, qualified applicants will be assessed based on the application requirements. Applicants who have completed all of the admission requirements by the March 31 deadline will receive priority consideration. Applicants who are Licensed Dental Assistants with 1040 hours or more will receive priority consideration in the selection process. Applicants who have fewer than the recommended 1040 hours of work experience will be considered if there are not enough applicants with the minimum work experience. If there are more qualified applicants than available spaces, a selection process will be conducted and an alternate list will be established. Qualified applicants will either be accepted as one of the students in the program or will be placed on an alternate list. Students on the alternate list will be selected in the order of their alternate list number and only if previously selected students decline their acceptance prior to the first day of the first dental hygiene class. Applicants on the alternate list will not be automatically carried over to the next year and therefore, will need to apply again before the next application deadline to be considered.
