Delores Marshall Heart of Humanity Award Your Compassion has Changed Lives If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded. Maya Angelou 1

Delores Marshall a Heart for Homeownership Delores truly exemplifies what it takes to become a Habitat homeowner hardworking, courageous and determined to succeed. Before moving into her home more than a decade ago, Delores and her three children were living in a cramped apartment without a proper place to share a meal. Her growing family desperately needed more space, but finances kept homeownership out of Delores reach. Then Delores heard about Habitat for Humanity of Broward s program and applied. Unfortunately, Delores was turned down not once, but three times. Steadfast in her desire to become a Habitat homeowner, Delores applied a fourth time. Upon hearing she was accepted, Delores stated, It was like I had won the lottery. Delores met the challenge of completing 500 sweat equity hours and other homeownership requirements with the same perseverance it took to get into the program. In 2002, Delores and her children moved into their new home in Ft. Lauderdale. It not only provided her growing family the space they needed, but was affordable and allowed her to save for the future. Delores Celebrates with Joy at Her Home Dedication 2

Delores Marshall a Heart for Leading We re not done yet; there is still a lot to do to help families in need. As long as God gives me the strength, I will continue to help. Delores work with Habitat for Humanity didn t end with her home dedication. Since moving into her home, Delores has dedicated more than 1,200 volunteer hours building other families homes. Delores serves as a Volunteer Leader most Saturdays, patiently teaching groups of volunteers the art of Habitat home construction. Her favorite task is roof trussing. I ve loved getting on a roof since being a little girl. It makes me closer to the Lord, so I can thank him more quietly. 3

Delores Marshall an Inspiration to Others During a lifetime, there are only a handful of people you meet that inspire you on so many levels; Delores is one of those people. You will never hear her speak of what she needs, rather she asks what can she do to help. She has a heart of gold that she openly shares; I am proud to call her my friend. Cheryl Yaeger, Volunteer Leader When meeting Delores over 12 years ago when we both applied to Habitat, she definitely stood on the words of the Lord You can do all things through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:13). Habitat provided hope, encouragement, leadership and devotion to the success of each family. Delores has shown those same characteristics-she is Habitat! Antoinette Johnson-Green, Homeowner & Committee Volunteer 4

Delores Marshall A Heart for Haiti Ever since the earthquake struck Haiti, Delores wanted to lend a hand, but couldn t afford to go. Thanks to the support of others, she raised over $8,000 making her one of the top fundraisers. This enabled her to participate in the 2012 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project this past November. What Delores witnessed in Haiti was the saddest sight she had ever seen. The poverty was so deep, it made me wonder how someone could EVER live like that. If I didn t know better, I d say that God forgot about them. Delores helped to build two homes while in Haiti. Both families were very appreciative, especially since Delores understood first-hand what it was like to be in need of a home. Upon returning home from Haiti, Delores has a much greater appreciation for the blessings she has. I don t have much myself, but after seeing the way the Haitians are forced to live, I am a millionaire. 5

Steve Hudson Soul of Humanity Award Your Vision has Changed Lives Faith is the daring of the soul to go farther than it could see. William Newton Clarke 7

Rock Island Oaks A Signature Build The Hudson Family Foundation, along with other sponsors, paid for the construction of 30 single family homes in Rock Island Oaks, Habitat for Humanity of Broward s signature build to date. Located just south of Oakland Park Boulevard, Rock Island Oaks is a family-friendly community that offers residents easy access to public transportation, shopping, restaurants, parks, schools and places of worship. Rock Island Oaks fits a variety of families needs by offering five floor plans with either 4 bedrooms/2 bathrooms or 3 bedrooms/1.5 bathrooms. The homes meet the Silver-level of LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification standards, making them energy-efficient, less costly to maintain over time and healthier for homeowner families. 20,400 sq. feet of the property has been preserved as a grassy, open area for families to use for recreational activities, barbeques and socializing with each other. Rock Island Oaks is currently home to approximately 125 residents, 70% of which are children. 8

The Keys to a Brand New Life Through their generous gift, the Hudson Family Foundation gave keys to a brand new life to low-income families. Before moving into their new homes, these families were living in overcrowded, substandard and/or unaffordable rental housing. Now, they own a simple, decent home of their own that is made affordable through Habitat s interest-free loan. Brick by brick, stone by stone We built a place to call our own Gonna fill it up with laughter Write my happy ever after 'Cause for the first time in my life I'm holding the key To a brand new life waiting on me That's what makes a house a home That's what makes a house a home From A House, A Home, A song specially written for Habitat for Humanity by Anna Wilson 9

Rock Island Oaks Homeowner Deirdre Johnson Pays it Forward to Future Habitat Homeowners After moving into her new Rock Island Oaks home in November 2011, Deirdre Johnson decided to pay it forward by serving as a volunteer nurture partner in Habitat for Humanity of Broward s Family Support Program. Here is Deirdre s testimony: My name is Deirdre Johnson, a Habitat for Humanity of Broward homeowner and nurture partner in their Family Support Program. I moved into my home in 2011 and it has been an awesome experience. Being a Habitat homeowner has allowed me to appreciate everything God has provided to me and my family. Homeownership is a blessing that many families don t have the opportunity to experience. The opportunity to build my own home has taken homeownership to a different level. Each nail on the roof that I hit made me proud of myself as a single mother. Being a single parent is hard, but when sponsors and organizations like Habitat for Humanity of Broward join together to provide you with a foundation of strength, hope and humility, it makes life easier. Once I moved into my home, I knew that I had to give back to the organization. Not because I was obligated, but because God blessed me and now I needed to be a blessing to another family. 11

About ten years ago, I applied to Habitat but wasn t accepted; my income wasn t high enough. But that didn t stop me. I realized that to become a homeowner, I had to work harder, fix some credit issues and then trust that all will work out. I took my career more seriously, worked harder to pay off old bills and then tackled that application process again. Now here I am in my beautiful home that I assisted in building from beginning to end. I appreciate the sponsors, the volunteers and Collegiate Challenge students, because every day that I was on the job site, they were just as excited for me and my family as I was. Once I moved into my home, I knew that I had to give back to the organization. Not because I was obligated, but because God blessed me and now I needed to be a blessing to another family. I never thought that I would be a mentoring type of person, but when I realized that it takes support from family, friends and loved ones to make it through Habitat s homeownership process, I had to volunteer to help another family. Now that I have started serving as a Nurture Partner in the Family Support Program, it feels good. It s an honor to be involved. Thanks, Mr. Hudson, and Habitat, for all you are doing for families. Now, I m a part of that organization. the opportunity to build my own home has taken homeownership to a different level. Steve Hudson with Deirdre Johnson & her Son at the Home Dedication. 12

Thank you, Hudson Family Foundation, for making our dreams of homeownership come true! 13

Your Leadership is Changing Lives Sponsored & Built 24 Homes What makes Colin such an extraordinary leader is that he gets out of his office, straps on a tool belt, climbs on a roof, and builds homes together with Habitat homeowners and JM Family Associates. His leadership inspires us all to continue to give back to our community. 2002 The Launch of JM Family Enterprises Partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Broward In 2002, JM Family Enterprises made its initial investment in Habitat for Humanity of Broward by sponsoring one of 22 homes built in the Harmony Village Community in the Town of Davie. Designed as a mixed use community, Harmony Village Community was awarded the Florida Community Development Association s 2005 Achievement Award as a Best Practice. 16

The Early Years Women Build and Deerfield Under Colin Brown s leadership, JM Family Enterprises sponsored five homes between 2003 and 2005. JM Family Enterprises sponsored one of Habitat for Humanity of Broward s first Women Build homes in 2003, inspiring women from our community to take action on the issue of substandard housing and its effects on the health and growth of children and families. Since its launch a decade ago, Habitat for Humanity of Broward s Women Building a Legacy Program has engaged, equipped and empowered more than 1,000 women to fund and build 52 homes throughout Broward County. From 2004 to 2005, JM Family Enterprises sponsored the building of four single family homes in Deerfield Beach, home to JM Family s headquarters. 17

DRIVING STRONGER FAMILIES in Collier City From 2005 to 2007, JM Family advanced Habitat Broward s goal to revitalize Collier City, a blighted community targeted by Pompano Beach for redevelopment, by sponsoring eight homes. To date, Habitat Broward has built 83 homes in Collier City. Planning is underway to transform vacant land acquired in Pompano Beach into a thriving and affordable place to live for low income families in need. Without the Help of Cranes, JM Family Associates Lifted the Trusses and Secured them to the Exterior Walls of Eight Homes Working with Habitat Broward has given our Associates the opportunity to give back to our community while developing skills they can use in the workplace. JM Family Associates have Dedication and Drive Colin Brown, President & CEO JM Family Enterprises, Inc. 18

Faces of Hope in Oakland Park JM Family Enterprises sponsored seven homes in Oakland Park from 2008-2012, bringing hope to the Auguste, Delgado- Benitez, Eliott, Gay, Roberts, Roberts and Roland families. 19

From Blighted to Revitalized in Unincorporated Broward JM Family Enterprises generously sponsored the building of three homes in a distressed neighborhood in Unincorporated Broward in 2010. JM Family Enterprises impacted the lives of the Hardy, Graham and Jean-Louis families as well as the community. The ongoing presence of hundreds of JM Family Associates throughout the building process, along with the quality of homes built, encouraged area residents and businesses to improve their properties. 20

A Commitment to Sustainable Building Habitat for Humanity of Broward became the first Broward County builder awarded the prestigious LEED Gold certification. JM Family Enterprise Associates worked alongside the homeowners and their families to build six homes that met the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) standards for high performance green buildings in design, construction and operations. As a Gold-level LEED certificated builder, Habitat for Humanity of Broward joins a select group of industry leaders for successful performance in five key areas: sustainable site development, water conservation, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality. In addition to underwriting the cost of the LEED certification, JM Family Enterprises generously provided an Accredited Professional (AP) to work with Habitat for Humanity of Broward throughout the certification process. Rick Jorden, JM Family s Director of Construction and Real Estate, served as the LEED AP. 21

Julia s Story In Search of a Better Life When Julia Delgado-Benitez moved from Cuba to America 16 years ago in search of a better life, she had no idea her journey would lead to Habitat for Humanity of Broward. In 1996 at the age of 29, Julia found herself homeless the victim of domestic violence and struggling to raise three small children alone. For seven months, Julia and her children sought refuge in an efficiency apartment at Paul s Place, a homeless shelter run by Christ Church United Methodist, one of Habitat Broward s faith-based partners. With rental assistance from Broward County, Julia was able to move into an apartment where the family stayed for the next four years. Poor schools and the desire for a home of her own inspired Julia to apply to Habitat for Humanity of Broward s homeownership program in 2009. I grew up in the same home in Cuba for 29 years. I want to give that same sense of stability to my kids, says Julia. The journey toward becoming a Habitat homeowner was not without its challenges, however. A series of events beyond her control, including a big increase in rent and a house fire, forced the family to move five more times. Completing her sweat equity hours was also difficult, as Julia juggled the responsibilities of working, being a single parent and caring for her elderly mom. When asked what helped her through this difficult period, Julia says, The support we received from JM Family was tremendous. They modeled respect, consideration and appreciation in how they treated the families they sponsored. They worked on our houses with so much integrity, like they were building their own homes. JM Family Associates & Julia on Final Landscaping Day 22

Since moving into their new home on May 25 of this year, Julia and her family are settling into a new routine and enjoying the benefits of their long journey to first-time homeownership. The Habitat experience has shown me that when you work hard for something, you ll get it. I now strive more to reach my goals, says Robert, Julia s 15-year-old son. The best part is that we don t have to move anymore, states Anthony, Julia s 11-year-old son. Roxanne, who was only one month old when Julia entered the homeless shelter eight years ago, just loves her new Habitat house. There is a lot of space for us to study and play. We have our own backyard. Reflecting on how far she has come since she first left Cuba in search of the American dream, Julia thanks God for leading her to Habitat for Humanity of Broward and all the good people she met along the way. Habitat gives a sense of community how people come together, volunteer their time time they could be spending with their family or doing other things to give support, build homes and provide hope for the future. Julia gives back to her community by serving as a leader and teaching classes to both adults and children. The support we received from JM Family was tremendous. They modeled respect, consideration and appreciation in how they treated the families they sponsored. They worked on our houses with so much integrity, like they were building their own homes. 23
