PART B: Description of the Project Title: Education for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation ECCAM Grant amount approved: 1,529,525 EUR Duration of the mobility activities: (Indicate the longest individual mobility planned) 48 months Project summary (around 400 words) The strategic objective of the project is to promote sustainable development and poverty alleviation by increasing the availability of trained and qualified high-level professional manpower in the Caribbean and Pacific countries. The project intends to strengthen cooperation between Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the Caribbean and Pacific region in view of increasing access to quality education. Postgraduate students will undertake postgraduate studies to promote student retention in the country along with mobility of staff (academic and administrative) while increasing competitiveness and attractiveness of the institutions themselves. The specific objectives are: 1) provide access to higher education for economically and socially disadvantaged students, particularly from rural areas and remote islands 2) facilitate cooperation on recognition of interdisciplinary studies and quotations; 3) continue to the progressively improve the quality of higher education through promoting internationalism, harmonization of programmes and MSc and PhD curricula with partner institutions; 4) enable qualified international students, academics and staff to benefit logistically, culturally and professionally from the experience gained in the context of mobility to another country and ; 5) promote inter-institutional cooperation between sending and host institutions and enhance medium to long-term educational, cultural and economic links between participating Caribbean and Pacific regional countries. - 1 -

Iwokrama International Centre (IIC): Guyana Shield. ICC works in climate change sustainable forestry and ecotourism. ICC is an international nonprofit organization governed by an international Board of Trustees and managed by professional team of researchers at around 70 staff in Georgetown, River Lodge and research Center Kurupukari. Research is clearly identified in Iwokrama s mission as one of the means of achieving conservation and sustainable utilisation of our forests. Currently, Iwokrama is engaged in a number of projects that fit well within the IIC s continuing research agenda goals. The three largest projects comprise the Forest Research Network; the Guiana Shield Initiative and a programme focused on capacity building to support national initiatives in reducing deforestation and degradation in Guyana. The first project is funded by the European Commission and the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) EU-ACP Forestry Research Network Project the second by the European Union, the Dutch Government, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Netherlands Committee; and the third by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
