Developing in the Maritime Industry The Master of Science in Maritime and Naval Studies program at SUNY Maritime College is designed to provide a deeper knowledge and understanding of maritime and naval studies to professionals with an interest in the history, literature, and culture of the sea, who wish to enhance their career prospects by earning a graduate degree. The curriculum of the program consists of core courses in maritime and naval history, literature, transportation and environmental policy. A large number of electives offer students the ability to tailor the Maritime and Naval Studies Program to explore individual areas of personal and professional interest.

Program overview The Master of Science in Maritime and Naval Studies is a 31-credit hours program. Courses are offered entirely online, and can be completed in as few as 3 semesters. The core pillars of the curriculum are maritime and naval history, literature, transportation and environmental policy. Meet the Faculty Elissa DeFalco, Ph.D. Dr. DeFalco s love of literature led her to pursue degrees in the discipline at the University of Chicago (BA), McGill University (MA) and Roehampton University in London (Ph.D.). She studied some of the world s greatest archives, searching for stories of everyday people who went to sea. Dr. DeFalco draws from her research and publications for the Maritime Piracy and Predation course she will teach in the Maritime and Naval Studies program, in which she will share this revolutionary history and literature and how it still influences the world today. John Rocco, Ph.D. John Rocco is a Professor of Humanities at the State University of New York, Maritime College. He holds a Master s degree from Queens College and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York Graduate Center. Dr. Rocco is widely published in popular magazines and academic journals and is a contributor to the Dictionary of the Avant-Gardes and American Book Review. He has published several books of rock criticism including The Doors Companion, The Nirvana Companion, The Beastie Boys Companion, and Dead Reckonings: The Life and Times of the Grateful Dead, all for Schirmer Books. Dr. Rocco s interest in Herman Melville s Moby- Dick focuses on the great experimental novel s impact on American popular culture. In 2006, he received the SUNY Chancellor s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

How to Apply Admission to the Master of Science in Maritime and Naval Studies is competitive. Each applicant is reviewed holistically on factors such as academic performance, communication skills, professional accomplishment and other relevant skills and abilities. To be considered for the program, applicants must submit the following: An online application at www.sunymaritime.edu/gradadmissions An application essay Official transcripts from all institutions attended International Applicants In addition to the aforementioned requirements, international applicants will be required to submit the following additional information: Transcript evaluation from a NACES accredited credential evaluator (www.naces.org) Official TOEFL (minimum score requirement of 79) or official IELTS scores (minimum score requirement of 6.5). International applicants who have graduated or earned a minimum of two semesters worth of credit (minimum 12 credit hours) with a B average from an institution at which instruction is in English are exempt from this requirement. Financial Aid SUNY Maritime College is widely recognized within the higher education community and by national media for providing students with an outstanding educational value. Students in the MS in Maritime and Naval Studies Program finance their education a number of ways: Federal Stafford and Plus Loans For students who qualify, the Federal Stafford Loan program at the graduate level may provide up to $20,500 in loan monies to assist in covering the cost of attendance. Federal Plus Loans are credit-based and vary in rate and amount based on a number of factors. Message from the Program Chair The Master s degree in Maritime and Naval Studies (MNST) is designed for college graduates, ashore and at sea, who have a great appreciation for both the sea and the humanities. Created by a distinguished group of faculty, it combines literature, history, art, music, law, environmental studies, and business, all delivered in an online format. The Maritime and Naval Studies Master s is available to a select group of college graduates who can demonstrate an interest in the subjects of the degree and the ability to succeed in an online environment. The State University of New York Maritime College has a long history of delivering quality education in both traditional and online formats. The MNST degree is the first of its kind. Luce Library Recent graduates of Maritime College have benefited from nearly 100% job placement. Luce Library houses a collection of print materials and electronic resources with an emphasis on maritime topics including many rare and highly specialized titles. The Library s archives include the College s institutional records as well as collections relating to the history of the Port of New York including the records of Sailors Snug Harbor and the Marine Society of the City of New York.
