Project ideas of University of Udine for Horizon 2020 Health 2014/2015 www.uniud.it The University of Udine is an Italian Public University founded in 1978 by National Law No. August 8, 1977 546, art. 26, as part of the reconstruction plan of Friuli region after a devastating earthquake in 1976. It has legal personality. The University has scientific, educational, organizational and financial autonomy but is governed by public law. It has 700 professors and researchers, 17.000 students, 14 departments, two of them related to medical sciences. Prof. Damante Giuseppe - medical genetics Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) play a major role in control of gene functions. Alteration of RBPs expression and/or function is crucial for several diseases, including cancer. Thus, investigation on RBPs would provide knowledge to improve understanding of mechanisms of diseases. We have preliminary data indicating that the global RNA profiles bound to a RBP show great differences between normal and cancer cell lines. The project is aimed to investigate global RNA profiles bound to RBPs in normal and cancerous tissues., hospitals Prof. Beltrami Carlo Alberto pathological anathomy Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Identification of the mechanisms leading to cell aging, especially in stem cells, with effect on the organ pathophysiology. Dott. Lonigro Renata medical genetic Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Applying NGS technologies to construct a data bank of genetic variants having a role in modulating the severity of neurodegenerative diseases, progression of the disease and could be potential target of therapies: i.e.stratifying patients on the bases of their genetic variants could have a prognostic value if specific variants can be related to the severity of disease. More importantly, a data bank of such genetic variants could allow future pharmacogenetic studies in the perspective of an efficient and personalized medicine. Dott. Our aim is the invitro reconstituition using innovative tools for biochemical analysis, mesoscale follow-up to establish drug screening readout-sytems Looking for: enterprises Prof. Francesco Trevisan electronic engineering Advancing active and healthy ageing Topic PHC 21 2015: early risk detection and intervention Project idea The research project aims to develop new strategies for thrombotic risk profile diagnostics that is fundamental to prevent ischemia which is one of the most common cause of death and physical disability in developed countries. The evaluation of the thrombotic risk profile is of fundamental importance for calibrating a personalized pharmacological therapy. In fact, only the optimal amount of anticoagulant drug guarantees at the same time a full antithrombotic coverage and the minimization of side effects as developing serious bleeding. The decision on the dose and type of anticoagulant drug is complicated by the fact that the thrombotic risk of a given patient varies with time as a result of the pharmacological treatment. Therefore, the evaluation of the thrombotic risk profile should be repeated over time and performed at the patient's convenience, namely as a test administered at the point-ofcare. Looking for: Universities, Enterprises
Dott. Francescato Maria Pia - phisiology Integrated, sustainable, citizen-centred care Topic PHC 28 2015: Self-management of health and disease and decision support systems based on predictive computer modelling used by the patient him or herself Project idea I am an inventor of a patent to help patients insulin-dependent diabetics to decide how many carbs take to prevent the onset of hypoglycemia during exercise. The exerciseinduced hypoglycemia is known as the most frequent adverse event in these patients and is also a major barrier to the introduction of physical activity in daily life of the patient. Needless to say that physical activity is strongly recommended in these patients at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. I need to "test" my algorithm on a group of patients suitable to demonstrate the suitability of the estimates (already tested in the laboratory) and find partners to put the system on the market.
