Project ideas of University of Udine for Horizon 2020 Health 2014/2015 www.uniud.it The University of Udine is an Italian Public University founded in 1978 by National Law No. August 8, 1977 546, art. 26, as part of the reconstruction plan of Friuli region after a devastating earthquake in 1976. It has legal personality. The University has scientific, educational, organizational and financial autonomy but is governed by public law. It has 700 professors and researchers, 17.000 students, 14 departments, two of them related to medical sciences. Prof. Xodo Luigi - biochemistry Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Role of oncogenic K-ras in pancreatic cancer and development of new therapeutic strategies Some partners are already defined Looking for: Universities Prof. Puccillo Carlo Ennio Michele - immunology Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Age-related changes in the regulation of immune system as co-factor for autoimmune and cancer diseases Looking for: Universities, Enterprises, research centres Prof. Marcon Gabriella - Neurology Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Clinical and biological study on brain aging in centenarians

Prof. Damante Giuseppe - medical genetics Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) play a major role in control of gene functions. Alteration of RBPs expression and/or function is crucial for several diseases, including cancer. Thus, investigation on RBPs would provide knowledge to improve understanding of mechanisms of diseases. We have preliminary data indicating that the global RNA profiles bound to a RBP show great differences between normal and cancer cell lines. The project is aimed to investigate global RNA profiles bound to RBPs in normal and cancerous tissues., hospitals Prof. Beltrami Carlo Alberto pathological anathomy Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Identification of the mechanisms leading to cell aging, especially in stem cells, with effect on the organ pathophysiology. Prof. Fabio Barbone - epidemiology Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea relationship between metal exposure and acute cardiovascular and chronic effects of neurodegenerative type in Finland Germany Austria Poland Check republic Slovacchia e Baltic countries Prof. Gianluca Tell molecular biology Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Alteration of DNA repair mechanisms and human pathologies: from ageing to tumor development

Dott. Lonigro Renata medical genetic Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Applying NGS technologies to construct a data bank of genetic variants having a role in modulating the severity of neurodegenerative diseases, progression of the disease and could be potential target of therapies: i.e.stratifying patients on the bases of their genetic variants could have a prognostic value if specific variants can be related to the severity of disease. More importantly, a data bank of such genetic variants could allow future pharmacogenetic studies in the perspective of an efficient and personalized medicine. Dott. Colussi Gian Luca cardiology, genetics Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Interactions between melanocortins, insulin, and aldosterone signals in sodium retention, hypertension, and hypertensive induced organ damage, enterprises Dott. Paolo Brambilla - psychiatrist Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea prevent the risk of psychopathology in adolescence Looking for: Universities, research centers, hospitals, enterprises Dott. Carlo Vascotto molecular biology Topic PHC 1 2014: : determinants, risk factors and Project idea Study on mitochondrial DNA damage

Prof. Esposito Gennaro chemical and molecular biology Topic PHC 2 2015: Understanding diseases: systems medicine Project idea Studies of amyloidosis and amyloidosis inhibitors Done Dott. Gri Giorgia surgical pathology Topic PHC 3-2015: Understanding common mechanisms of diseases and their relevance in comorbidities Project idea To study the role of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor express by immune cells in the development and progression of chronic inflammation Some partners are already defined Looking for: Research centers, hospitals Dott. Vitale Gaetano general pathology Topic PHC 3-2015: Understanding common mechanisms of diseases and their relevance in comorbidities Project idea Role of B cells in maintaining and restoring immune homeostasis Dott. Lonigro Renata medical genetic Effective health promotion, disease prevention, preparedness and screening Topic PHC 5 2014: Health promotion and disease prevention: translating omics into stratified approaches Project idea Identifying early biomarkers of neurodegenerative disease onset and/or progression through NGS (i.e. RNA Seq) approach for a better monitoring of the timing of therapeutic intervention. Huntington's disease could take advantage from such an approach. Looking for: Universities, hospitals Dott. Quartuccio Luca - reumatology Topic PHC 13 2014: New therapies for chronic non-communicable diseases Project idea New drugs for rheumatoid arthritis - genetics and pharmacogenetics Some partners are already defined Looking for: Research centers, Universities, SMEs

Prof. Uzzau Alessandro Topic PHC 16 2015: Tools and technologies for advanced therapies Project idea development of a system of plates by application of microwaves for the destruction of plants in peritoneal carcinomatosis of ovarian origin Prof. Claudio Brancolini molecular biology Topic PHC 16 2015: Tools and technologies for advanced therapies Project idea Targeting epigenetic changes and protein stability for innovative anticancer therapies Prof. Schneider Claudio - biology Topic PHC 16 2015: Tools and technologies for advanced therapies Project idea Proteostasis and ribostasis are at the basis of most relevant degenerative pathologies. The quality control systems for rna-protein interactions at the mesoscale level are responsible for the trafficking of of biogels within the cell. Our aim is the invitro reconstituition using innovative tools for biochemical analysis, mesoscale follow-up to establish drug screening readout-sytems Looking for: enterprises Prof. Francesco Trevisan electronic engineering Advancing active and healthy ageing Topic PHC 21 2015: early risk detection and intervention Project idea The research project aims to develop new strategies for thrombotic risk profile diagnostics that is fundamental to prevent ischemia which is one of the most common cause of death and physical disability in developed countries. The evaluation of the thrombotic risk profile is of fundamental importance for calibrating a personalized pharmacological therapy. In fact, only the optimal amount of anticoagulant drug guarantees at the same time a full antithrombotic coverage and the minimization of side effects as developing serious bleeding. The decision on the dose and type of anticoagulant drug is complicated by the fact that the thrombotic risk of a given patient varies with time as a result of the pharmacological treatment. Therefore, the evaluation of the thrombotic risk profile should be repeated over time and performed at the patient's convenience, namely as a test administered at the point-ofcare. Looking for: Universities, Enterprises

Dott. Francescato Maria Pia - phisiology Integrated, sustainable, citizen-centred care Topic PHC 28 2015: Self-management of health and disease and decision support systems based on predictive computer modelling used by the patient him or herself Project idea I am an inventor of a patent to help patients insulin-dependent diabetics to decide how many carbs take to prevent the onset of hypoglycemia during exercise. The exerciseinduced hypoglycemia is known as the most frequent adverse event in these patients and is also a major barrier to the introduction of physical activity in daily life of the patient. Needless to say that physical activity is strongly recommended in these patients at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. I need to "test" my algorithm on a group of patients suitable to demonstrate the suitability of the estimates (already tested in the laboratory) and find partners to put the system on the market. Looking for: Universities, Enterprises FOR FURTHER CONTACTS Dott. Lorella Baron Research support office University of Udine lorella.baron@uniud.it +39 0432 556392
