INSTITUTE OF BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE HISTORY Over these years, the economical development has outgrown the mental health concerns in Taiwan. Varieties of abnormal behavior such as substance abuse, alcoholism, suicide, and violence have endangered the public health and led to serious social issues. Moreover, the increased prevalences of various chronic illness have challenged the policy of public health to effective solutions of prevention and treatment. Local professionals involved in the prevention and treatment for these abnormal behavior and their related problems are far less in number as compared to that in USA. Thus, foster of professionals whose expertises and interests are either in basic research or clinical practice, in this regard, is urgent and essential. This Institute has been founded upon the approval of the Department of Education in response to these demands in 1996. Enrollment of graduate students started in August, 1997. Initially, this Institute comprised of 4 graduate programs of study. They were clinical Psychology, Social and Health behavior, Behavioral Neuroscience and Psychiatric Medicine. Staring from 2000, these graduate programs were reorganized into groups: Clinical Psychology, Behavioral Neuroscience, and Psychiatric medicine. Up to 2014, We have trained 206 alumni, And we have 4 faculty (including 1 Gathers hires Professors).. CHARACTERISTICS 1. Study of Drug Abuse: The risk factors and the biological mechanisms for the 8-111

development and maintenance of drug addiction and dependence. 2. Study of Depression and Suicide: The social familial, psychological risk factors for the incidence of depression and the suicidal attempts.. Psycho-physical Health Promotion for Women and Children: Sex hormone-related mental disorders, developmental and mental deficits in pre-term borns and behavioral problems of abused children. 4. Study of the other Psychological Illness: The genetic factors associated with these mental disorders. PROGRAM We currently have Clinical Psychology Program, Behavioral Neuroscience Program and Psychiatric Medicine Program AIMS OF TRAINING Clinical Psychology Program 1.This program is designed to equip students with knowledge and skill in Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology for (1)analyzing the causes of abnormal behavior and mental disorders as well as their impact on health and physical illness (psychopathology); (2)utilizing reliable and effective evaluating tools and designs to assess the abnormal behavior and mental disorders (behavioral and psychological assessment); ()employing efficient skills to modify abnormal behavior and mental disorders (behavioral modification or psychotherapy) to achieve the-state-of-the-art level in prognosis therapy, rehabilitation, and prevention of mental illness. 2.Graduate students are expected to be strongly motivated to conduct scientific research on unsolved and important issues of the causality of mental disorders, the interaction of mental illness and physical health, behavioral assessment and modification via objective, replicable procedures and methods. Moreover, discussion and suggestions extended from the research results are obligated to be disseminated by the graduate students in the peer-reviewed journals..social involvement and devotedness are especially encouraged in this program. Graduate students are anticipated to provide service, including 8-112

consultation, educational and training workshops and related activities in an attempt to promote physical and psychological health. Behavioral Neuroscience & Psychiatric Medicine Program 1.These two programs are designed to equip students with current and edge-writing research skills and methodology in Behavioral Neuroscience and Molecular genetics. 2.Graduate students are expected to develop an academic career to employ the empirical science to investigate the cause and the underlying mechanisms of mental diseases. With respect to the international collaboration, the faculty at the Institute have conducted a number of studies in collaboration with other investigators at well-known universities around the world, including Yale University, Harvard University, and Iowa University. Moreover, the collaborative research will be expanded to include more prestigious universities. With regard to the national connection, a number of faculty from the Department of Psychiatry at National Defense Medical College, Kaohsiung Medical College, and the Department of Psychology of National Chung Chian University have been working on a great body of studies. Extensive cooperation in teaching including distant teaching, course exchanges, and resource sharing between the Institute and National Chung Chian University has been proceeding. Regarding the service and promotion in mental health, Consultation Center for Mental Hygiene and Health Promotion affiliated by the Institute has been organized, in part, to provide the opportunity of clinical practice and furnishes mental health consultation to around the community University. In addition, the service for the University community could comprise the individual and group consultation for mental hygiene and health promotion, workshops, and addresses on the public education of mental hygiene. To enhance the retraining quality for the crew member in medicine, the Institute vigorously hold varieties of meetings, workshops, and talks sponsored by the Department of Hygiene, medical network, the Labor Committee, Associations and Societies for enhancing the continuing education. Finally, Faculty and Graduate students are strongly involved in the professional training and supervision for the mental hygiene-related organizations in Tainan.
