HPEF has granted over 6,166 awards totaling more than $66 million to allied health, nursing, mental health and medical students and recent graduates practicing in 57 of California's 58 counties. Between April and June 2014, HPEF plans to award an additional $32 million to over 2,000 applicants who are dedicated in providing culturally and linguistically competent healthcare in medically underserved areas. our mission The Health Professions Education Foundation aims to improve healthcare in underserved areas of California by providing scholarships and loan repayments to health professional students and graduates who are dedicated to providing direct patient care. about us The Foundation awards scholarships and loan repayments to health professional students and graduates. In return for this support, recipients agree to provide direct patient care in a medically underserved area (MUA) of California for a period of one to three years depending on the program. The Foundation administers its programs from the following funds: the Health Professions Education Fund, the Registered Nurse Education Fund, Vocational Nursing Education Fund, the Mental Health Practitioner Education Fund, the Mental Health Services Act, and the Medically Underserved Account for Physicians. improving healthcare in medically underserved areas health professions education fund These programs are funded entirely through grants and contributions from public and private agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals and are used for the development and implementation of the Foundation s scholarship, and loan repayment programs. The Health Professions Education Scholarship, Health Professions Education Loan Repayment, and the Allied Healthcare Scholarship programs operate from this fund. vocational nursing education fund These programs are funded through a $5.00 surcharge on the biennial licensure renewal for vocational nurses. The Vocational Nurse Scholarship, Licensed Vocational Nurse to Associate Degree Nursing Scholarship and the Licensed Vocational Nurse Loan Repayment programs operate from this fund. registered nurse education fund These programs are funded through a $10.00 surcharge on each Registered Nurse licensure renewal. The Associate Degree Nursing Scholarship, the Bachelor in Science Nursing Scholarship, and the Bachelor in Science Nursing Loan Repayment programs operate from this fund. mental health practitioner education fund The Licensed Mental Health Service Provider Education Program is funded through a $10.00 surcharge on licensure renewal for Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Licensed Clinical Social Workers. mental health services fund The Mental Health Loan Assumption Program is funded through the Workforce, Education, and Training component of the Mental Health Services Act(MHSA). medically underserved account for physicians This program is funded by a $25.00 surcharge on each Physician s licensure and renewal, one million dollars is transferred each year from the Managed Care Administrative Fines and Penalties Fund, and also through private grants and donations. ALLIED HEALTHCARE SCHOLARSHIP / LOAN REPAYMENT (AHSP/AHLRP) Increases the number of trained allied healthcare professionals Encourages allied health professionals to practice direct patient care in MUAs of California Awards scholarships up to $4,000 per year in financial assistance to eligible students and loan repayments to eligible professionals Requires one year service obligation or 100 volunteer hours in a MUA This program is funded by Kaiser Permanente VOCATIONAL NURSE SCHOLARSHIP (VN) Increases the number of VNs Awards scholarships up to $4,000 per year to students who are enrolled in or accepted to an accredited VN education program LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM (LVNLRP) Repays up to $6,000 in educational debt incurred while attending an accredited VN program ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING SCHOLARSHIP(ADNSP) Increases the number of Registered Nurses (RN) practicing in MUAs of California Awards scholarships up to $10,000 per year to eligible nursing students accepted to or enrolled in associate degree nursing programs LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE PROVIDER EDUCATION PROGRAM (LMHSPEP) Increases the number of licensed mental health service providers available to practice and provide direct patient care in a publicly funded or public mental health facility, a non-profit private mental health facility, or in a mental health professions shortage area Repays educational loans up to $15,000 over a two year period Requires two year service obligation in a qualifying facility MENTAL HEALTH LOAN ASSUMPTION PROGRAM (MHLAP) Increases the number of mental health providers working or volunteering in the Public Mental Health System at facilities that are administered in whole or in part by DMH or the county. Repays educational loans up to $10,000 once the 12 month service obligation has been completed Requires one year service obligation in a qualifying facility STEVEN M. THOMPSON PHYSICIAN CORPS LOAN REPAYMENT (STLRP) Supports recently licensed physicians Awards loan repayments up to $105,000 in educational debt Requires three year service obligation in a MUA EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP / LOAN REPAYMENT (HPSP/HPLRP) Increases the number of Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Physician Assistants Awards scholarships up to $10,000 per year to eligible students and loan repayments up to $20,000 to repay educational debt over a two year period to recent graduates LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE TO ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING SCHOLARSHIP (LVN TO ADN) Increases the number of LVN s who pursue an ADN Awards up to $8,000 to students for the LVN to ADN program per year Allows eligible LVN applicants to apply for the LVN to ADN Scholarship if rejected after applying for the Registered Nurse Education Program BACHELOR OF SCIENCE NURSING SCHOLARSHIP / LOAN REPAYMENT (BSNSP/BSNLRP) Increases the number of Registered Nurses (RN) practicing in MUAs of California Awards scholarships up to $13,000 per year to nursing students accepted to or enrolled in baccalaureate degree nursing programs Awards loan repayments up to $8,000 over a two-year period and may be awarded a second time for another $11,000 for another two-year period to BSN graduates to repay governmental, educational, and commercial loans LIKE US on Facebook!
