We don t want cloud(s). We want clear skies.
Cloud is undefined, indeterminate, hazy, and vague. At best. Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. http://searchcloudcomputing.techtarget.com/ definition/cloud-computing
And it s even dangerous. When you don t know what exactly you re dealing with. "The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we've redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do. [ ] The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashiondriven than women's fashion. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It's complete gibberish. It's insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?" Richard Stallman, founder of GNU, in The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/technolog y/2008/sep/29/cloud.computing.richard. stallman "One reason you should not use web applications to do your computing is that you lose control," he said. "It's just as bad as using a proprietary program. Do your own computing on your own computer with your copy of a freedom-respecting program. If you use a proprietary program or somebody else's web server, you're defenceless. You're putty in the hands of whoever developed that software."
And it s even dangerous. At least when you don t know what exactly you re dealing with. the cost of being forced off the cloud due to a regulatory change such as stricter data privacy laws the cost of implementing and operating countermeasures to mitigate risk unexpected expenses involved in initial migration of systems loss of internal IT knowledge lock-in with a specific cloud provider or proprietary service model, which may slow down future adoption of open standardsbased services http://www.govtech.com/policy- management/dangers-of-cloud- Computing.html
Why move online then? Because otherwise the entry barrier to collaborative translation is too high for some. You don t need to pay up in full before use You don t need to establish your own IT infrastructure with all its dragnet. And, when applied to translation, it might be less of a lock-in.
The memoq cloud has two important differences from everyone else s solutions. It s on-premises technology applied to online use It s a hybrid approach with free seamless movement between the online and the onpremises setup.
The three ways to get a memoq server Scheme Barrier TCO (2+ years) Control Buy license, host yourself Highest Highest Highest Buy license, hire us to host Medium Lowest Medium Subscribe and have us host Lowest Medium Lowest
We didn t move these to the cloud providers such as Amazon or Azure. Why? Because a paranoid control freak is in charge. We own or rent all the servers. We based the infrastructure and its protection on our own corporate network. Systems are architected so that they easily scale to further servers.
Detour: Kilgray corporate IT largely insourced from cloud to private cloud. Mission-critical documents were hosted with cloud storage provider since then known to leak out data. Built up own SharePoint system
Cloud-rented memoq servers are just the same as on-premises or hosted ones, with a restriction on user counts. 1 Go to Language Terminal to subscribe. That will rent you the memoq client licenses, too. 2 Download memoq client. 3 You ll get a password. Use this password to get a PM CAL license for your memoq client.

Moving from the cloud to on-premises memoq server, even a rented one, has a full backup facility which can be restored on an on-premises server. You can get the backup from the self-service page on LT.
How are you protected? First and foremost, by transparency you know what is where. memoq cloud servers are currently hosted in Nuremberg, Germany. Language Terminal servers are hosted in Strasbourg and Nuremberg. Pilot/trial servers are hosted in Budapest. Because systems are quite scalable, it is easy to extend hosting to the Americas.
This is for the technical ones: this is how the cloud IT is laid out Actual memoq server host 1 Firewall Actual memoq server host 2 (can be many) Database server (can be clustered or replicated)
You subscribe to the cloud through Language Terminal. 1 Register at Language Terminal. 3 2 Fill in your billing details under Business details. Click memoq, and then Subscribe to memoq server in the cloud
Why is it a good idea to connect the memoq cloud to Language Terminal? The answer is: automation. Project management automation Resource sharing, content pickup
Project management is LT s most popular feature anyway (among freelancers, for the time being). Feature Usage (% of active users) Project records 36% Professional profiles 30% memoq project backups 12% InDesign conversions 4% Light resources 1%
Project management for organizations in LT will include this: Assignment and negotiation Project distribution Collecting deliveries Creating cost and revenue reports
And even further into the future, this: Connecting contents Direct memoq server automation Quality profiles Workflow management and automation
Can you trust Language Terminal with your data? Portal (can be replicated) Business logic layer (can be replicated) Firewall Content server (can be clustered) Database (can be clustered; no direct access from the network) Back-end portal (locked down for Kilgray personnel only)
Locations and availability memoq cloud servers are currently hosted in Nuremberg, Germany. Language Terminal servers are hosted in Strasbourg and Nuremberg. Pilot/trial servers are hosted in Budapest. Hosted memoq servers are in Strasbourg, Nuremberg, and St Louis. Kilgray IT is hosted in Budapest, Nuremberg, and Montréal. We are cross-checking the availability between these locations.
